New Kickstarter is liveJul 16, 2022 - Community AnnouncementsI had a large blog post written here, but lost all the text when going to preview the post.. ugh! So I'll keep it short and sweet this time: There's a new Kickstarter here: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/fordesoft/eternal-exodus-monstertaming-jrpg-with-crafting-and-fusion/ In this one, you can get keys for the platform of your choice (including consoles this time), limited-edition physical items like figurines of the characters, a world map poster, and more. Note that the choice of physical items pops up as an "add-on" after you choose a tier. This Kickstarter replaces last year's Kickstarter, which just barely missed its funding goal, and so no funds were collected in that one. The campaign failing unfortunately took a heavier toll on development than expected, resulting in a delay. Many people have since asked me whether I'd relaunch it, and now the time has come. Oh yeah, here's a new trailer to go along with it. This one is quite a bit different than the previous trailers.. :) New trailer released, showcasing the story of the gameApr 8, 2022 - Community AnnouncementsI recently assembled a new trailer for the game. Unlike the last trailers, which focused on demonstrating the gameplay and unique features, this one mainly emphasizes the game's storyline. Be aware that there are spoilers!! It was impossible to make a completely spoiler-free trailer while still showing the story, because the game's story moves along at a fast pace from start to finish. In other words, as you're playing through the game, there are many "big reveal" events that happen frequently. I paced things that way intentionally to keep the story exciting and intriguing, but it sure makes it difficult not to spoil anything... With that said, all of the spoilers in this trailer occur in the first 3 hours or so of gameplay (about the first 1/4th or 1/5th of the total game), so there are no late-game spoilers. Still, your decision on whether to watch the trailer should be based on how much you want to be revealed. If you're already planning on buying the game, maybe hold off on viewing this specific trailer. :) The Kickstarter just went live!Sep 29, 2021 - Community AnnouncementsKickstarter link The Kickstarter for the game is now live here: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/fordesoft/eternal-exodus-a-monster-taming-rpg-with-fusion-and-crafting/ In the Kickstarter, you can get the game at a discount, or go big and get some limited-edition physical items with your order, like a soundtrack CD and a world map. Why Kickstarter when the game is so far along in development? There's some more detail at the bottom of the Kickstarter page, but the basic reason is to fund some nice-to-have extras that weren't yet planned for the game. If the Kickstarter is successful, I'll dedicate the money to these new features: Support for at least two new languages beyond the existing English and Japanese. This is the main reason I wanted to do a Kickstarter in the first place, because translation is very expensive. Not only will this open the door for more people to play the game, it will also be useful for players who are studying new languages, because of the game's innovative "play in two languages at once" feature. Which languages are TBD, but since the game gets a lot of web traffic from China, I think Chinese will be one of them. A trading card game. You'll be able to find cards scattered around the world, and build a deck with them to play a simple minigame against NPCs, a little bit like how Final Fantasy VIII and IX have trading card games built into them. Hard mode. A new difficulty mode will be added, which will give the enemies new AI, making them smarter. It won't be unfair: enemy stats will remain the same, and they'll still be found to the same restrictions like managing their MP. But they'll be able to spot your weaknesses easier, be more likely to attack your low-health party members, etc. There are some stretch goals, like post-game content and a town-building sim feature, if we get there. Kickstarter launch trailer There's a new trailer now, too. This one is similar to the one from a few weeks ago, but with some minor tweaks to correct some issues. Please feel free to share it with friends who might be interested in the game - getting the word out for the game has been tough, so your support will go a long way. New trailer + Kickstarter announcementSep 3, 2021 - Community AnnouncementsHi everyone, The game finally has a new trailer you can see here and on the Steam page. The last trailer was done way back in 2019, when the game was still in an "early tech demo" state, so this is a looong time coming. There's also a Kickstarter launching this month. As many of you know, I've been funding the game 100% out of pocket for the bits that I can't develop myself (the art and the Japanese localization). Why Kickstarter then? Mainly so I can afford to have the game translated into more languages. Being a text-heavy game, translation is veeeery expensive, so it's the one part I can't afford to do on my own. But I know that most followers of the game are already English speakers and don't benefit directly from the translations, so I'll be adding extra content and features (like post-game content, a trading card game, etc.) to the game if the Kickstarter succeeds or meets stretch goals. As a perk, Kickstarter backers will get a key for the game at a discount: you'll get a key for your platform of choice at the $15 tier instead of paying the retail $20. There will be other backer rewards available, too at higher tiers, including a limited edition soundtrack CD. Here's the link to that: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/fordesoft/eternal-exodus-a-monster-taming-rpg-with-fusion-and-crafting/ If you have friends who you think might be interested in the game, on Facebook/Twitter/reddit/wherever, please help spread the word. Every Steam wishlist, every Kickstarter follow, every newsletter signup - they all help a ton, and as a solo developer, your help and your feedback goes a long, long way in making this game a success.New public demo now (finally!) availableJun 26, 2021 - Community AnnouncementsThere's a new demo up now. You can install it from the Steam store page now by clicking Play Demo. The demo up previously was almost two years old (October 2019), because it was built right before the art revamp started. Consequently, this new demo has all-new art, as well as a lot of other changes. New music, new features, bug fixes, and some new content. The demo is about 1-2 hours long, depending on your playstyle, and ends immediately after the Dead Plains boss fight. If you're in the closed beta, there's a new build available for that, too. That beta version has close to an hour worth of extra content beyond what's in the demo.Developer streamJun 21, 2021 - Community AnnouncementsShowcasing footage and information about the game, and answering questions from viewers.Open beta testing - join hereApr 29, 2019 - Community AnnouncementsTL;DR: signup instructions If you want to beta test, simply join the Discord here, say hi in the #steam-key-requests channel, and I'll PM you a Steam beta key: https://discord.gg/pvjEXdw Full announcement Hi everyone, The game is finally ready for the first round of beta testing. Woo! Right now, it's playable up through the first boss battle / the end of the first mainline quest. So, although there's enough to get a feel for the game, it's only about 15-20 minutes long. I demoed the game at a small, local indie game expo this past weekend, and people seemed to like it a lot. So I think it's finally ready to start the beta test here. I should note that, since there's not a lot of content yet, it's totally understandable if you want to wait until a future beta test round where there's more to play. Feel free to join the Discord either way. But if you want to check out an early preview of the game and offer some feedback that will help shape the development, please read on. :lunar2019coolpig: I've created a small Discord server for the sake of getting feedback and suggestions. If you join here and post in the #steam-key-requests channel, I'll PM you a beta test key. https://discord.gg/pvjEXdw Development roadmap Almost all of the programming is done now. And boy was there a lot of programming. I built the engine RPG "framework" for the game from scratch inside of Unity, not using any existing assets for things like menus and battle systems, so it took quite a while. The crafting/equipment system remains to be programmed, but that's about it. Now, my focus is going to be on creating content for a while. The game will consist of somewhere around 12-15 dungeons, and my goal is to knock out at least one of those, plus the surrounding quests and such, per month. I'm going to start on dungeon #2 and its surrounding cutscenes this week.Open beta testing this springJan 3, 2019 - Community AnnouncementsHi all, The game's still early in development, but I'm planning on hosting some open beta testing this spring. If you want to try the game out while it's early in development, and help shape the future and balance of the game, please click the Follow button the Steam page. That way, you'll get a heads-up when I post an announcement here about the beta test. I'll post some more info at that point about how to sign up, so I know where to send your Steam key. Please note that the beta testing will be for unfinished, still-in-development builds of the game. One of my main goals here is to see whether there are any balance issues. Like "whoa, I fused this demon with this skill and now the game's just way too easy to be even fun - what's up with that?" sort of things. Of course, I am happy to offer Steam keys for the final game when it launches to beta testers as well in exchange for your honest feedback. :)
