Enter The Backrooms

UH OH! - Just fixed a game-breaking bug.Nov 4, 2022 - Community AnnouncementsThis is extremely embarrassing, but apparently, Enter The Backrooms had some faulty code for loading/reading save data that's been lingering in the game since the first Beta for Release Version V. I think the patch I just did fixed it. This was only affecting people who recently purchased the game, which is why none of us noticed the bug in playtesting. Still, I should've played around with save data a bit more before releasing the full update, so that one's on me. Sorry about that and please forgive me for this blunder! :)Price IncreaseNov 2, 2022 - Community AnnouncementsHey everyone! I hope this news doesn't bother too many people, but after a lot of thought and speaking with fans, friends, and family, I've decided to raise the price of Enter The Backrooms from $4.99 USD to $9.99 USD. Here's a breakdown of my train of thought: - Enter The Backrooms has 50+ levels, 100+ sub-levels, over a dozen of entities, and much more. It is by far the largest Backrooms game on Steam. - I've spent thousands of hours of my life working on this game. I've had to make a lot of sacrifices and adjustments in that time. - There are other Backrooms games on Steam that cost more yet offer less content, so compared to them, the game is a much better deal, even after the price increase. Now, I'm aware that some people cannot run the game very well, if at all. A recent patch fixed the game for many people, but there are of course still some who can't run the game as well as I would like. The fact of the matter is the game is unoptimized because of poor choices I made over two years ago and because of my lack of experience/skill as of now. In the coming months, I will be focusing entirely on polishing the game and improving how it runs, which is why Release Version V is the final content-based update. In short: for people who can run the game properly, the higher price is still very fair, especially compared to other Backrooms games. My goal for the next couple of months is to make the game run properly for a larger number of people and a wider range of devices. If I cannot meet this goal, I can always decrease the price at a later time. Thank you for understanding and I hope you all are having fun with Release Version V. More to come in the near future! - Justin Kroh, Cosmic Crow CreationsHappy Halloween! - Another Small PatchOct 31, 2022 - Community AnnouncementsHappy Halloween everyone! First of all, thank you to everyone who participated in the Steam Scream Sale. Tonight I prepared another small patch for the game, here's what's been changed: - Added a loading bar to the startup of the game. (This is mainly for people with extra slow load times) - Made Dens on Level 5 rarer - Fixed crashes related to unloaded sound files when switching between saves10/27/2022 PatchOct 27, 2022 - Community AnnouncementsHello again! This is another quick patch that irons out small issues with the game. The most notable component of this patch has to deal with the pesky white screen bug. I read online that Processing (the software I used to build the game) handles stuff on the startup of programs in weird ways. One of the weird quirks is that including a "frameRate()" function before other functions on startup can prevent the program from loading everything it needs to before it throws an exception and crashes the game. The frameRate() function is now called at the end of startup. This may or may not fix the white screen issue for a significant number of people - it's honestly hard to tell either way. In any case, I'm trying my hardest to fix the technical issues of the game and I hope this small adjustment makes a big impact. If not, I'll keep working as hard as I can to polish Enter The Backrooms. Thank you for remaining patient with me. :)10/23/2022 PatchOct 23, 2022 - Community AnnouncementsHey there! I hope you all have been enjoying Release Version V so far. There were a couple of small bugs that were overlooked in the major update, so this is a quick patch to get those issues resolved. Changes: - Fixed small rendering bugs on Levels 21 and 22. - Lights in multi-story levels are rendered more efficiently. - Completing Level 8 (the "First Ending") is less likely to freeze the game. - You can once again look around during the "First Ending" and the text is now black. - Removed Duller Spawn Rate from the debug menu since it was outdated, this may be replaced soon. Expect a few more small patches in the coming weeks. To be clear, I have concluded full-time development of Enter The Backrooms, but I'm still willing to polish certain aspects of the game for the time being. Have a great day!Release Version VOct 22, 2022 - Community AnnouncementsAfter almost two and a half years of development, the ultimate update for Enter The Backrooms is finally ready for launch! It is with a heavy heart that I claim this is the last major update for Enter The Backrooms. Fear not, though, I’ll remain active in the community and may even release a small update here and there. As for my life, I’m going to focus more on college and start thinking about my next game development adventure. I can’t wait to see what’s to come, and I hope some of you stick around to share the ride with me. I love you all so much and can’t begin to express my gratitude for your support. Enjoy the update, everyone! - J...R-V Beta VIIIOct 16, 2022 - Community AnnouncementsThe translation team of Enter The Backrooms worked very hard to bring you this latest Beta for Release Version V! Not only does this Beta include updated translations for the game, it improves the menu in Sandbox Mode, adds a new controls setting, and makes a mountain of small adjustments. Here are the highlights of R-V Beta VIII: - Updated translations for the new content coming in Release Version V - Added Dutch Translations. Thanks to TreeBruh and Red Tree for translating! - Improved method of level selection in Sandbox Menu - New “Smooth Turning” setting that smooths the motion of looking around - Updated the Credits Screen with links to articles that inspired ETB content - Added social media links for Discord and Reddit to the main menu - Fixed crashing on Level 12 (hopefully) - Replaced boxes with more efficient models to improve performance - You can now control arcade minigames with normal movement keybinds - When the game crashes, it will now automatically open the crashlog - Made more sound effects for Soul Armor - Many other small fixes and adjustments Huge shout out to the translators for their efforts this time around. Enter The Backrooms wouldn’t be the same without them! As for Release Version V, as long as no big issues are found this week, this is the last Beta for the full update. My goal is to release the full update by next weekend. It’s been a wild two and a half years, and I can’t wait to release this exceptional update to the world. See you all again very soon! R-V Beta VIISep 25, 2022 - Community AnnouncementsThe previous Beta may have included the True Ending of Enter The Backrooms, but that doesn’t mean I’m done yet! This Beta not only includes new journal pages and achievements, it introduces one last ending to the game: Zenith. Other than those features, this Beta makes some smaller changes and fixes a good number of bugs. Here’s what’s new in R-V Beta VII: - Added 20 New Journal Pages to Find & Trace, for a total of 100. - Added 30 New Achievements, for a total of 120. - Achieving “Error 404” and “Omnipresent” lets you access Zenith through The Hub. - Added Zenith, a secret ending for the most dedicated of players. - Descending 5000 units in Level -6 will take you to Level -7 now. - The inventory on Level -10 and Level 404 appears grayscale now. - Stability decreases slower on Level -6 now. - Fixed a lighting bug on Level -8. - Completing Level 404 now sends you to the main menu instead of Level 0. - Progress bars for certain achievements were re-added to the menu. - Level Keys are slightly rarer compared to the last Beta. I think the new journal pages turned out well, I like the new achievements, and I think Zenith is a fantastic reward for players who obtain it legitimately. This was a smaller Beta, simply because there’s not much more to do before Release Version V is finished. The next Beta will update translations, fix some bugs, and make some quality of life changes in preparation for the full update’s release. See you then! R-V Beta VISep 18, 2022 - Community AnnouncementsI’ve been working on Enter The Backrooms for over two years now. The levels, the entities, the chaos, and the excitement have all made the journey to this point nothing short of incredible. That’s why I’m so happy to release this Beta in particular, which includes the culmination of my work on Enter The Backrooms: The True Ending. Here’s what’s new in R-V Beta VI: Added a False Ending to The End, which plays out after you spend one minute on the level. Added shrines to The End that contain a Level Key for Level -10. Replaced Level 11 doors in Level -9 with Level -10 doors, which require a key. Added Level -10, which contains five “zones”. You must survive one minute in each zone to complete the level and get sent to Level 404. Added Level 404, the True Ending of Enter The Backrooms. Added Royal Rations, a special item that gives you health regeneration for one minute. Added Memory Jars, a special item that allows you to save your game. Added Pocket Consoles, a special item that lets you play an arcade game for free. Added Soul Armor, a special item that deflects three entity attacks. Added spawn items for Snairs, Corruptors, and Menders to Sandbox Mode. Level Keys are twice as common now. Updated generation for dead ends on Level 16, Level 24, and Level 33. Various bug fixes. Thank you to everyone who’s supported this game over the years. Despite the many faults and drawbacks of this game, it feels amazing to have a dedicated community of people playing something I’ve poured so much of myself into. I really hope you enjoy what I’ve added this time. Now that the True Ending is done, the next couple of Betas will add things like achievements, journal pages, and translations in preparation for the launch of Release Version V. See you again soon. R-V Beta VSep 10, 2022 - Community AnnouncementsThese last couple weeks have flown by. College work has been pretty light so far, so I had plenty of time to work on the additions and changes in this Beta. As of the previous Beta, 11 new Main Levels have been added for Release Version V. Now, it’s time to show the Negative Levels some love with 4 new negative levels and 2 new entities exclusive to the Negative Levels. Here’s what’s new in R-V Beta V: - Added Level -6: Chaotic Descent. A wooden tower in which you must descend floors to find rifts. - Level -6 Event: The layout of walls on each floor is shuffled. - Added Level -7: Utopia. A vacant city with hollow, poorly textured buildings and massive wooden walls. - Level -7 Event: The player is teleported high into the air every few minutes. - Added Level -8: Binary Corridors. An expanse of tunnels with stone barricades that randomly appear and disappear. - Level -8 Event: All of the barricades disappear for 10 seconds. - Added Level -9: Aquatic Threshold. Inspired by The Poolrooms, this level is a wide open space with tiles, pools, and decorative columns. - Level -9 Event: The lighting and water level will change frequently. - Added Corruptors to Negative Levels. Corruptors are glitchy pieces of geometry that drain 10% of the player’s stability on contact. - Added Menders to Negative Levels. Menders are the peaceful counterpart to Corruptors that replenish 10% of the player’s stability. - Dullers and Clumps have updated code for spawning, which means some levels may be easier/harder now. - Insanities and Sentient Rifts move side to side as they approach the player, making them harder to avoid. - Facelings can now be found on the sidewalks and in the parks in Level 11. - Corridors in Level 33 can be blocked off now, making navigation less straightforward. The new negative levels are all quite unique and atmospheric, and I love how the new entities turned out. Now that I’ve finished a total of 15 new levels for Release Version V, it’s time for me to work on a big feature: The True Ending. This will be coming in the next Beta, so stay tuned and have fun with the new features! R-V Beta IVSep 1, 2022 - Community AnnouncementsSummer is over, and so is my summer break, which means it’s time to get back on track with Enter The Backrooms! I apologize for the long hiatus, but I thought I should enjoy the last few weeks of summer by taking it easy as opposed to working on the game. Now that I’ve started college, I’m in a much more productive mood and I’m ready to finish the rest of Release Version V. This Beta introduces some huge changes to the inventory system, the most elaborate level ever added to the game, and a new entity to keep you on your toes. Here’s what you’ll find in R-V Beta IV: - Added a system of bags for the inventory. Each bag can hold a certain number of items. - Added Plastic Bags, which can carry a total of 20 standard items and one special item. - Added Nylon Bags, which can carry a total of 30 standard items and two special items. - Added Backpacks, which can carry a total of 45 standard items and two special items. - Added Duffel Bags, which can carry a total of 60 standard items and three special items. - Added a bag slot to the inventory, which by default has a plastic bag. - The inventory becomes full based on your total number of items as opposed to having 10 of each standard item. - Added a bag upgrade to the trades offered by some Facelings. This is the only way to obtain better bags. - Added the ability to drop items by holding down Q. - Added the ability to use items with the mouse as opposed to number keys. - Added Level 33: The Infinite Mall - Added 3 Stages of The Corrosion State to Level 33, which gradually makes the level less visually appealing as you go deeper into the level. - Added a closed sub-level to Level 33 - Level 33 Event: You become very disoriented and lose health for a few seconds. - Added Snairs: “Snail Snares” that look like tapeworms. This stationary entity will deal a small amount of damage and slow you down for 20 seconds if you step into its jaws. - Doors in The Hub now have a sign that indicates whether they are unlocked or not. Thank you for remaining patient this summer. With this Beta out of the way, the hardest work is behind me, and I can steamroll through the rest of this update - assuming there are no big hiccups along the way. There are no more main levels coming to the game, but the next Beta will include some new negative levels. See you then!R-V Beta IIIJun 15, 2022 - Community AnnouncementsHello, everyone! I’ve worked very hard for the past couple of weeks to bring you four new levels to explore and engage with. This selection of levels is a bit odd as it strays from the main canon of the Backrooms Wikidot, but I’m happy with how these levels turned out and think players will enjoy these levels nonetheless. This time, I’ve included two of my favorite levels from the Liminal Archives to increase the number of Backrooms Wikis represented by Enter The Backrooms (LA Level 17 and LA Level 20 specifically). Here’s the heaping helping of content included in this Beta: Added Level 29: Artistic View - An art gallery with winding halls and spacious galleries. Added 3 Sub-Levels to Level 29 Level 29 Event: The walls will cycle through rainbow colors for several seconds. Added Level 30: Dining Area - A comforting restaurant devoid of food or kitchens. Added 3 Sub-Levels to Level 30 Level 30 Event: Your sugar supply will be replenished every few minutes. Added Level 31: Chromatic Gauntlet - A maze with neon tunnels that connect to roller rinks, dining areas, and atriums. Added 6 Sub-Levels to Level 31 - each sub-level has a different color of light that affects gameplay in different ways. Level 31 Event: All lights turn white, which applies all sub-level effects at once. Added Level 32: Lockdown - A claustrophobic labyrinth of unused lockers. Added 3 Sub-Levels to Level 32 Level 32 Event: Glitchy lockers will appear and disappear around the map. Chairs use a different, more detailed model now. Exits for levels 23 and up have been tweaked to be slightly unpredictable. Arcade minigames now have a screen that keeps the game from starting unless the space key is pressed. A button to quickly access the Filters menu has been added to the title screen. Title screen buttons without text are labeled on first-time startups of an update now. I’m very proud of how these levels turned out and I think they strike a good balance between being visually interesting and fun to play. As of now, 10 new main levels have been added in Release Version V of Enter The Backrooms! The next Beta will include Level 33, which will be a very detailed level, and the last main level in Enter The Backrooms. It will also include a highly-requested entity: Hounds. From here on out, Betas should take less time, so I look forward to sharing new content with you again soon!Beta Branch is now public.Jun 4, 2022 - Community AnnouncementsThe title is pretty self-explanatory. Such a large number of players already use the Betas that I decided it would be best to make them public. Hopefully, this will let more people enjoy new content as its released - although be warned that beta versions are less stable and prone to having bugs.R-V Beta IIMay 29, 2022 - Community AnnouncementsGreetings, Backrooms fanatics! As the month of May has continued, I have worked hard on new content for Enter The Backrooms (maybe a little harder than I should!). Not only did I work on some new levels for the game, but I also experimented with a new system for players to tweak the visuals of the experience. Here’s the new stuff you’ll find: Added Level 26: Otherworldly - an empty house that seems to extend forever. Added 3 Sub-Levels to Level 26 Level 26 Event: The ceiling will rapidly move upward. Added Level 27: Woodrooms - a highly-randomized maze of wooden walls. Added 4 Sub-Levels to Level 27 Level 27 Event: The textures will periodically switch to alternate wood variants. Added Level 28: Lost Stronghold - a dark dungeon cloaked in a blue haze. Added 2 Sub-Levels to Level 28 Level 28 Event: The level’s prison bars will alternate positions every minute, opening some corridors and sealing off others. Be careful not to get trapped! Added a new “Filters” tab to the Settings Menu Added 9 New Adjustable Filters: Brightness, Contrast, Saturation, Vibrance, Fuzz, Blur, Vignette, VHS Overlay, and RGB Shift. Smilers are more resistant to the buffs provided by artifacts. Camera movement and rotation with the mouse have been smoothed a little bit - more experimentation with this is planned. I’m very proud of the new content in this Beta. I think the three new levels all bring very interesting concepts to the table and utilize unique generation methods. Additionally, I think the visuals of the game are much better with the new filters. Not only do they make the game feel more visually appealing, but they can also be customized to fit all sorts of purposes, from making short films to taking interesting screenshots. I hope you all enjoy this one, and I will see you again in the next Beta, which will include Levels 29, 30, 31, and 32. Stay tuned!R-V Beta IMay 18, 2022 - Community AnnouncementsHello, everyone! It’s been a very long time since the last update, so it’s nice to finally be back in business. Over the last couple of months, I’ve dealt with mountains of schoolwork in preparation for my high school graduation. I am pleased to say that I have now graduated from high school, so I should be able to update the game at a faster pace from now on. So, without further ado, here are the features included in the first Beta for Release Version V of Enter The Backrooms: - Added Level 23: Abandoned Factory - Added 2 Sub-Levels to Level 23 - Level 23 Event: The world will become bright while your health increases. - Added Level 24: Aluminum Bunker - Added 2 Sub-Levels to Level 24 - Level 24 Event: A red light will fade in/out and insanities will spawn frequently. - Added Level 25: The Arcade - Added 2 Sub-Levels to Level 25 - Level 25 Event: The screen will become heavily pixelated for a few seconds. - Added Playable Arcade Machines to Dens, Outposts, and Level 25 - Added 4 Minigames found on Arcade Machines: Snake, Runner, Fireball, & Dropper - Small improvements to performance & memory usage, may need further testing. This Beta took a long time to make, specifically because of the arcade machines and their respective minigames, so I really hope you enjoy the new content. The next Beta will include three new levels and should come out in a week or two now that I have more time for development. See you next time!03/06/22 PatchMar 6, 2022 - Community AnnouncementsThis is just a quick patch that addresses some issues that were still in the game after Release Version IV, specifically with some level exits and Partygoers.Release Version IVFeb 28, 2022 - Community AnnouncementsRelease Version IV upgrades the entirety of Enter The Backrooms.
