Frontier boss David Braben issues public apology for Elite Dangerous Odyssey woesMay 23, 2021 - EurogamerUPDATE 24/5/21: Frontier Developments boss David Braben has issued a public apology for ongoing problems with Elite Dangerous Odyssey. The expansion, which launched last week, has suffered from performance issues, server outages and a raft of bugs. "First and foremost, I would like to apologise wholeheartedly to those who have been suffering from these problems," Braben said in a post on the Frontier forum. More specifically, phase four of the Odyssey alpha integrates a recent snapshot of Elite Dangerous' base game - taken on 23rd April - so that participants can make use of any Commanders, ships, ship customisations, fighters, SRVs, and so on acquired up to that point. And to ensure players are able to spend more time doing space stuff and less time waiting for their belongings to worm their way from wherever in the galaxy they were left in the main game, Frontier is reducing transportation times and transportation costs for the alpha. Additionally, a number of core gameplay features not previously available in the alpha are now live and accessible in phase four, meaning players will get the clearest indication yet of just how impactful Odyssey's additions - primarily focussed on on-foot traversal and first-person gunplay - might be on the existing space sim experience. Odyssey promises to deliver the biggest shake-up Elite Dangerous has yet seen by giving space explorers the opportunity to leave their ships and stretch their legs around space stations, settlements, and across planetary terrain. Developer Frontier's long-awaited discovery of below-waist appendages is accompanied by a range of new activities designed to give Commanders more (mostly leg-based) gameplay options while galavanting around Elite Dangerous' procedurally generated galaxy. Given that players will have the option to hop out of their ships and stroll around on-foot in Odyssey, Elite dangerous' planetary systems have received a major overhaul. As part of these changes, new geological features and pockets of life will be available for discovery by thorough explorers, which can, in turn, be scanned to generate sellable data. Frontier says it's now quadrupled the number of vegetation species in Elite Dangerous as part of its planetary overhaul, and those players interested in making a profit from the organic life they encounter will first need to acquire a Supratech Artemis Suit - purchasable from all good space stores - granting access to the new Genetic Sampler. Previously, Odyssey's AI-piloted Apex Interstellar taxi service was the only way to get around the galaxy during the alpha, forcing players into an endless series of lengthy journeys with nothing much to do but stare out the window at the infinite expanse. Now, however, with the arrival of the alpha's combat-focussed second phase, players can fly themselves around the available systems - touching down on planets for more of Odyssey's centrepiece on-foot traversal along the way - as their whims take them. To that end, Frontier is issuing all alpha testers (that is, anyone that's pre-purchased Odyssey's Deluxe Alpha Expansion) with a Cobra Mk III, complete with multi-crew seat, as well as 300,000 credits to spend as they choose. Additionally, Phase Two's playable galaxy area has been expanded to approximately 20LY, with everyone now starting out in the Nervi system. Read more Frontier shares more on Elite Dangerous: Odyssey's new planetary settlementsJan 15, 2021 - EurogamerWhile console players will now be waiting a little longer than expected for the arrival of Elite Dangerous' Odyssey expansion, its foot-based first-person antics aren't too far off for those on PC - and ahead of its "late spring" launch on the platform, developer Frontier has honed in on one of its new features, Settlements, and shared more details. Odyssey's settlements, you might recall, are dustbowl-like havens for NPCs belonging to that system's dominant faction and are found on the surface of certain planets and moons. Players can explore settlements at any time in order to engage with (or even attack) their inhabitants, and may also be required to infiltrate them to complete certain on-foot mission objectives. In a new post on the Elite Dangerous forums, Frontier has now shed a little more light on settlements, responding to questions posed by the community. There's a bloodthirsty streak running through the majority of queries, with most players apparently curious to know what will happen should they attempt to completely wipe settlements off the map. Read more Wander round space stations and settlements in Elite Dangerous' latest Odyssey dev videoSep 29, 2020 - EurogamerCome the arrival of Elite Dangerous' major Odyssey expansion early next year, Commanders suffering from a severe case of butt-clench will finally be able to clamber out their cockpits and step foot on solid ground; planets we've already had a glimpse at, but now Frontier has offered a more thorough look at the interstellar japes awaiting players as they first-person their way around social hubs such as space stations and settlements as part of its latest developer video. Players wanting to stretch their legs somewhere a little more lively than the relatively barren wastes of Elite Dangerous' new explorable planets can disembark at the likes of outposts, planetports, spaceports, even dustbowl-like settlements back on terra firms, and here they'll be able to find work, undertake missions, or simply do a bit of socialising with NPCs. Odyssey will, of course, mark the first time Elite has had fully modelled and animated NPCS in-game (they'll be generated based on Elite's background simulation to reflect the dominant faction in a particular area), and they're able to move around, adding a bit of personality to the world, and giving players the opportunity to speak and interact with them. Read more Elite Dangerous merging Horizons expansion into base game ahead of Odyssey launchSep 29, 2020 - EurogamerFrontier Developments has announced it will be merging Elite Dangerous' first paid expansion, Horizons, into the core space sim experience from 27th October on PS4, Xbox One, and PC. Horizons originally launched back in 2015, and eventually delivered five themed content updates by the time development wrapped up at the tail-end of 2017. The complete list of additions delivered as part of Horizons is expansive, but include the likes of planetary landings and ground vehicles, weapons and module engineering, ship-launched fighters, passenger transportation ships and missions, customisable avatars, multi-crew co-op play, and Thargoids. Previously, players needed to pay an additional £19.99 or thereabouts to access the above content as part of the Horizons expansion, but from 27th October it'll be available to all current and future owners of Elite Dangerous' base game, with no additional purchase required.
