The classic Doom games get a surprising update from BethesdaJan 29, 2025 - PCGamesNFriday December 10, 1993: that's the day the FPS genre changed forever as Doom came barreling onto our PCs. The weapon feedback, blood-pumping soundtrack, and unashamed over-the-top violence might seem quaint today, but that's only because the entire videogame industry learned from the lessons id Software was teaching. That was over 30 years ago, though, and since then every other shooter to grace our screens owes the Doomguy an unpayable debt. This is why the recent Doom re-releases from Bethesda are so important, because not only do they make these classics easier to play than ever, but they're spruced up for the modern age. There was one thing missing at launch, however, and Bethesda has finally added it to the games. Read the rest of the story... Even when not modding the game itself, hardware modders are getting it to run on all sorts of devices. But that's not where the list of amazing Doom creations ends, as now a good chunk of Doom 64 is running inside the first two Doom games. I promise it's not deliberately confusing, this is actually monumentally impressive. Read the rest of the story... Arguably the original first-person shooter, Wolfenstein 3D wowed 90s PC gamers (including me) with its fast-paced and surprisingly smooth 3D action on our big, beige boxes, although it all looks quite primitive by today's standards. However, these screenshots show a secret Wolfenstein 3D level in Doom 2, with the lighting handled by an RTX path on one of today's best graphics cards, making the game almost unrecognizable. I don't really need to tell you why it matters. Probably the most important FPS game to ever grace the PC, the 1993 shooter and its sequel Doom 2 would define an entire genre and set the standard for everything to come - Call of Duty, Half-Life, Team Fortress 2, Counter-Strike, Halo, Battlefield, Apex Legends, you name it. Now, the original id Software classics are back in a remastered form that's bigger and better than ever before, and the best part is that you might just get them for free on Steam. However, this means a number of the id’s offerings have been released or reiterated in ways that can make our digital storefronts a touch…confusing. Rather than write out the differences between Final DOOM, Ultimate DOOM and just DOOM, we’re consolidating our Steam library of titles! For those id Software experts that do know all the variations of our games released on Steam, bear with us as we simplify how our games appear so that newcomers have an easier time. HERE’S THE PLAN: Starting August 10, we will begin rolling out changes to our Steam Store listings for select id Software games. In short, we are consolidating each game under one major title and/or changing the title for a simpler shopping experience. Below will detail our current plans for Steam consolidation and how it affects your current Steam library if you’ve purchased these games already. And don’t worry, even if we are delisting a title you currently own, you’ll still have the game in your library to download and play like always. Without further ado, the lowdown: DOOM (1993) We will be changing the name of Ultimate DOOM in the Steam Store to DOOM (1993). No other major changes are being made at this time. DOOM II DOOM II will include Final DOOM and Master Levels as one install package. Each can be launched separately as follows: DOOM II DOOM II (Enhanced) Master Levels for DOOM II Final DOOM DOOM 3 DOOM 3 will be merged into a package containing the original DOOM 3 plus the Resurrection of Evil expansion and DOOM 3: BFG Edition. The package allows each version to be installed separately as follows: DOOM 3 DOOM 3: Resurrection of Evil (Requires DOOM 3 to be installed) DOOM 3: BFG Edition NOTE: Players that already own DOOM 3 or DOOM 3: BFG Edition on Steam will be upgraded to the DOOM 3 consolidated package with all three releases for free! Quake II Quake II and its mission packs, The Reckoning and Ground Zero, will be merged into one install package with multiple launch options: Quake II The Reckoning Ground Zero Quake III Arena Quake III Arena and Quake III Team Arena will be merged into one package with separate installs: Quake III Arena Quake III Team Arena STEAM BUNDLES In addition to updating our id Software titles on Steam, we’re also revamping our bundles (as well as introducing some new ones!) Note that if you already own certain titles listed in each bundle, you can complete it to get the remaining games added to your library at a discounted price. John Romero is one of PC gaming's most legendary figures, and he's out here continuing to create new levels for his most famous works. Sigil released in 2019 as a free, unofficial fifth episode for the original Doom, and now Romero has released a new, paid Doom II level supporting humanitarian efforts in Ukraine. The level is called One Humanity, and it's available for €5.00 (about $5.80 USD) on Romero's website. Every penny, as Romero explains on Twitter, goes to the Red Cross and the UN Central Emergency Response Fund. You'll need to make use of a modern Source port of Doom II in order to play the .WAD file. The new Doom 2 level for charity was announced and released on May 3, and now just four days later, John Romero has announced that their efforts have raised over €25,000 for Ukrainian relief - which is around $27.3K USD or £20.6K GBP - and the count is still going up. Now the Doom Shinobi mod threatens to add Doom to the best sword games on PC, as it turns the shooter into basically Ninja Gaiden 4. The new Doom Shinobi mod is out now and can be downloaded from ModDB. Creator edypagaza says they aimed "to bring and experience a new gameplay style for players" and they have definitely done just that. While there is some similarity to the third-person melee combat mod for Doom II, that's based more on weaponless hand-to-hand combat. Doom Shinobi, on the other hand, is all about awesome and ridiculous swordplay. The mod adds a traditional ninja blade, a ridiculous Final Fantasy VII-like broadsword, and throwing weapons like shurikens and kunai knives. Players can unleash multiple combo types and even magic powers against the demons. It really is quite insane. Read the rest of the story... New Doom mod Siren is a creepy new survival horror take in the style of System Shock, F.E.A.R., Prey, and Aliens - and there's a new demo to try out now. While id Software tried its hand at a Doom survival horror game with Doom 3 nearly 20 years ago, the more recent games like the fantastic Doom Eternal have put more emphasis on action over creepiness. This leaves room for modders to make their own horror takes on Doom, something they regularly deliver on. Siren is a new mod made by creator Dithered Output and has been in development for at least two years - and the latest 0.6 build is playable right now in a new demo. The modder says that they aimed to create "an experience closer to an Aliens game but with the variety and gameplay benefits the roster of Doom monsters brings". Read the rest of the story... Ashes: Afterglow now includes two full episodes of post-apocalyptic, Mad Max action, and it's available for downloading if you've ever wanted to drive around through the ruins of Atlanta on a motorcycle with machine guns on it. Ashes: Afterglow is one of the most convincing throwbacks to '80s B-tier action movies I've ever seen, and it began life as a total conversion mod for Doom II, although it's grown a lot over the course of the past six years. Lead modder Vostyok says it's inspired by Doom's action, the big open Build Engine levels of Duke Nukem 3D, and the vibes of the Stalker series, and you can see that all on display in the trailer below. You'll have to scavenge and fight your way through the ruins of an America devastated by a cataclysmic nuclear explosion in Atlanta, locking horns with raiders, mutants, vicious animals, and supernatural enemies borne out of the ambient radiation left in the wake of the disaster. But with the classic FPS game's fixation on ranged weapons, sometimes we can't help but wonder, "what if we could do this manually?" Fortunately, now there's an incredible Doom II mod that lets us do exactly that: beat up demons using Marquess of Queensberry rules. Spotted by PC Gamer, Doom Fighters is a Doom II mod that shifts the perspective to third person and makes it into a straight-up brawler. You don't get a shotgun. You don't get a pulse rifle. You definitely don't get a BFG-9000. It's you, the Doomguy, and your two fists against every pinky demon and revenant that Hell can send within punching distance. Modder edypagaza has added a 3D Doomguy model, which is important since you'll now be looking at yourself from the new third-person perspective all the time. You get light and heavy attacks, and can pull off cool moves like flips and roundhouse kicks - the trailer below even shows the Doomguy doing pro wrestling moves, grabbing zombiemen by the armpits, spinning them around, and then hurling them into next week. Other modders have other goals in mind, however. There's a new mod out called 'Doom 2 but the guns look bad,' which replaces all the weapon artwork in Doom 2 with a version that looks like it was made in Microsoft Paint, probably because it was. 'Doom 2 but the guns look bad' doesn't touch anything else in Doom 2, it just makes the guns look bad. Modder TechIguess explains on the ModDB page: "Yup, I literally just took Doom 2 and redrew the weapon models to make them look worse." If you were to judge the mod by how well it accomplishes the goals the modder set out for it, it's a smashing success: all these guns look extremely bad. Take the chaingun, for instance. Normally it's shown as a series of silver barrels bound together toward the muzzles, with hand-drawn lighting effects showing that it's made of reflective metal. The modded version looks like an icon for a fence. Read the rest of the story... The reveal isn't too much of a surprise - US retailer Best Buy successfully managed to leak the Doom Slayers Collection for Switch earlier today ahead of its official reveal - but the game's immediate post-announcement launch most certainly was, and Switch players can now enjoy some demon-hued FPS japes all in one bundle, featuring seminal 1993 original Doom, Doom 2, Doom 64, Doom 3, and 2016's sort-of-rebooted Doom. Notably, that's one more game than was featured in the Doom Slayers Collection for Xbox and PlayStation, which released toward the end of last year minus Doom 64 - a pleasant treat for Switch owners, based on Digital Foundry's previous enthusiasm for the port. Read more Here's Doom 2 made entirely out of cardboard (and John Romero)Feb 15, 2021 - PCGamesNThere's a YouTube channel dedicated to recreating classic games using a very unusual medium - cardboard - and it's more than a little impressive. The channel, named simply Games Made of Cardboard, has captured the essence of a whole bunch of retro titles via this very manual and creative medium, and its creator Bill Thorpe has now unveiled the latest: Doom 2 made of cardboard. Describing Doom 2's latest port as his "most ambitious and creative project to date" and a "personal tribute to one of my most treasured games of all time", the creator explains that the project took them an eye-watering nine months to complete, adding he's "both happy and relieved to have completed it". After nine months and plenty of hard work - as you can see through the various 'making of'-style videos of it on the channel - it's easy to see why, but the final result is worth it. The clip below showcases the final thing - Doom 2 as played via cardboard. The classic FPS game's levels are recreated painstakingly, with combat encounters, gun and destruction effects, and even Doom Guy's snarling (and sometimes bloody) avatar faithfully remade. Not to mention, John Romero himself has jumped into the fun, recreating his role as the famous 'Romero's Head' Doom 2 easter egg. Read the rest of the story...
