Deus Ex: Mankind Divided

Legendary sci-fi FPS is free to claim right now, but don't wait longMar 15, 2024 - PCGamesNWe didn't know it at the time, but the revival of classic sci-fi series Deus Ex that began with 2011's Deus Ex Human Revolution was about to come to a sudden halt just five years later, in 2016. That year saw the launch of Deus Ex Mankind Divided, which didn't quite hit the same highs as its predecessor, but continued to offer a satisfying blend of stealth action and world exploration within the context of a story about the ethical and social implications of rapid technological progress. Now we have good news for anyone who's meant to check the game out: Deus Ex Mankind Divided is free to keep on PC if it's claimed soon. Read the rest of the story... Toufexis also shared a few parting speculations about the unannounced Deus Ex sequel from Eidos Montreal that was reported cancelled last week. Toufexis wasn't involved with this one, and according to him, it likely wasn't a continuation of Jensen's story from Mankind Divided. Yes, last week it was Microsoft electing to fire an entire town’s worth of people into the sun following its acquisition of Activision Blizzard, this week it’s Embracer deciding to cut staff at Eidos Montreal and simultaneously do away with a title it’d spent two years working on. Even if it’d seemingly have been Adam Jensen-less, odds are the Deus Ex title in question would’ve been something at least a little bit fun, too. Embracer’s move to cancel the game was first reported by Bloomberg, which suggested that it was an unannounced title that was due to enter production later this year, something which obviously won’t be happening now. No other details regarding what the game would’ve been about or involved seem to have been made public as of yet, though voice actor Elias Toufexis has revealed that he hadn’t been brought in to work on it during the time it’d been in development. The last main series outing for the sci-fi, stealth RPG from Eidos and Square Enix was Deus Ex Mankind Divided back in 2016. Before that, we had Deus Ex Human Revolution, the revered prequel to Ion Storm's defining 2000 immersive sim. Now, as part of a series of responses regarding a Cyberpunk 2077 mod, Toufexis shares his opinion on the lack of a new Deus Ex game. Read the rest of the story... It's been seven years since the last mainline entry in Eidos' futuristic RPG game, and - to paraphrase the mechanical man himself - when it comes to a new Deus Ex, we're all asking for this. Lending his talents to Call of Duty, Assassin's Creed, and Fallout in the meantime, Deus Ex Human Revolution's gravel-throated star is now seemingly eager to know when Jensen will re-emerge. Likewise, Crystal Dynamics say they have taken "control" of its Tomb Raider and Legacy Of Kain games from their previous owner, Square Enix. Which sounds like a big deal, but really both studios are just reporting a change to their terms of service and privacy notices since they were bought by Embracer Group last month. Read more We're probably getting new Tomb Raider and Deus Ex gamesMay 20, 2022 - PCGamesNFollowing its acquisition of several high profile studios from Square Enix, Swedish media company The Embracer Group says it has wide-ranging plans for the intellectual property associated with those studios. New Tomb Raider and Deus Ex games are on the table of course, but so are "remakes, remasters, and spinoffs", as well as "transmedia projects". Earlier this month, the Embracer Group announced its plan with Square Enix to buy the studios Crystal Dynamics, Eidos-Montreal, and Square Enix Montreal. These studios come with some pretty big names in gaming IP, including Tomb Raider, Deus Ex, Thief, and the long-neglected Legacy of Kain series. In its latest quarterly earnings report, Embracer says it sees "great potential" for new games and remasters across these series, which in some cases have languished severely over the past decade or more. Take Thief, for example. The last new game in the series came out way back in 2014, to middling reviews. Rumours bubbled up a few years later about a sequel in the works at Eidos Montreal, but studio head David Anfossi responded by tweeting "forget it" - the studio lacked a team or a budget for such a project at the time. Read more A brief history of cyberpunk gamesDec 6, 2020 - EurogamerThe long-awaited release of Cyberpunk 2077 brings to an end years of feverish anticipation for those who have been itching to roam the streets of Night City, but it's only the latest example of gaming's fixation with the trappings of the cyberpunk genre. It's perhaps inevitable that gaming and cyberpunk are so closely entwined, given that both were birthed in the technological boom of the 1950s and gained mainstream pop culture presence around the same time in the late 70s and early 80s. The hard part is working out how to separate the games that cherry-picked aspects of the cyberpunk aesthetic - of which there are literally hundreds - from those that are, or at least attempted to be, genuine examples of cyberpunk fiction. For that, we need to nail down the genre's key tropes; namely a dystopian outlook on the near-future, an interest in alternate digital realities, drug or technology assisted human modification, and a cultural milieu in which corporate interests have long since outranked the quaint notion of elected government. Things got started pretty early, with adaptations of 1980s cyberpunk movies for 8-bit home computers like the ZX Spectrum. The Blade Runner game, rather cunningly, was licensed from the eerie synth score by Vangelis rather than the more costly movie despite asking you to fly your "Spinner" craft over Los Angeles, locating errant replicants then chasing them down in simple foot chases. An amusing distraction, but one that failed to grapple with the themes of cyberpunk in any meaningful way. Here are the 50 best RPGs you can play on PC today. (more…) Deus Ex: Mankind Divided was originally going to be about a completely different characterJul 29, 2019 - PC GamerElias Toufexis has performed a lot of roles over the years—here he is in a 2005 episode of the Canadian crime drama Da Vinci's Inquest—but one of his biggest has to be that of Adam Jensen, the lead character of Deus Ex: Human Revolution and Mankind Divided. His roughed-edged voice is a hallmark of the series: "I never asked for this" is one of the most famous videogame utterances to come along in years. Toufexis has worked on other big-name series since then, including Assassin's Creed, Splinter Cell, and Call of Duty, but he said in an interview with VG247 that Jensen is still the role he's mostly closely associated with. "You can go look at my Twitter, no matter what I tweet, inevitably somebody is saying, 'Did you ask for this? I bet you didn’t ask for this'," he said. "It’s the craziest thing, the fact that Jensen got pumped into this top tier of videogame characters was very surprising." But even though Jensen is now more recognizable as the "face" of Deus Ex than original lead Paul Denton (who was also shown the door after just one game), Square Enix had originally intended the character to be a one-and-done, so the sequel would be an entirely separate game, about someone else entirely. "They called me for the sequel, and it was a great thing to hear because initially—and I don’t know if anybody knows this, I think it’s OK to say this now—initially they were going to make the sequel without Jensen. They were just going to make another Deus Ex game," Toufexis said. "And from what I remember when I was told, the marketing team said, 'No, you can’t do that. Jensen has just bumped into this,' like I said, this discussion of top videogame characters ever. 'You can’t just not make a game without him, when you have him ready to go.' And they agreed, and they continued the story of Human Revolution." The full interview is a lot of fun, particularly if you're a Deus Ex fan, but unfortunately it also confirms that there's still no action on a sequel to Mankind Divided. Toufexis acknowledged that the game's story ended abruptly and didn't quite meet expectations, and while there's no explicit connection made to its relatively lackluster reception, plans to move directly into making a third game in the rebooted series never materialized. "We were going to, as far as I know, finish up where we finished up in Mankind Divided, and continue into whatever the next game was going to be. And I don’t think that Mankind Divided shipped their goal in terms of sales that they wanted to hit. So it immediately back-burnered," he said. "But I know that they said, I knew we were going to go right into it. In my mind, I had said, ‘OK, we’re doing this one, and then we’re doing the next one.’ And then suddenly I stopped get...
