Deus Ex: Game of the Year Edition

Deus Ex RTX Remix proves again that ray tracing is best on old gamesApr 2, 2024 - PCGamesNDeus Ex is often cited as one of the best FPS games ever made, alongside the likes of Half-Life and Doom. Its innovative combination of shooter mechanics with role playing elements, stealth, and its infamous body augmentations made it a landmark title. However, by today's standards, it looks like garbage, unless you're playing the new Deus Ex RTX Remix version, that is. Yes, RTX Remix's ever-growing library of ray tracing-enhanced games now includes the year 2000 classic, with Nvidia's software suite allowing modders to get to work converting the game to work with some ray tracing elements on the best graphics cards available. While I hope the once and future king of immersive sims won't stay down for long, the layoffs at Eidos Montreal and cancellation of an upcoming DX project have made the series' future seem bleaker than ever. But according to Elias Toufexis—the instantly recognisable voice of Human Revolution and Mankind Divided protagonist Adam Jensen—things have been bleak for years now... One of the greatest PC games of all time, the 2000 original carries enough reputation and credibility, surely, to make it a bankable prospect for even the most miserly of investors. Combine that with Human Revolution and Mankind Divided, the critically acclaimed and commercially performant prequels (Human Revolution sold well, Mankind Divided made less money, but still did fine) and you'd think Deus Ex's place in the center of Eidos Montreal's portfolio would be pretty much safe for life. But this is 2024, which in videogame industry terms is beginning to look just as dystopian as Warren Spector and Harvey Smith's vision of New York City. Read the rest of the story... The good news is that Cyberpunk 2077 fans have already started submitting their calls for him to take on a similar role in Project Orion. Yup, there’s no such thing as letting a poor guy grieve about the fact he might not get to play a character he likes anymore, work on Cyberpunk’s sequel has kicked off, and folks on Reddit think it needs another gruff cyber-mercenary. To be fair, who are we to argue? Toufexis, who’s long provided the gravelly tones of Adam Jensen, posted on the Deus Ex subreddit the other day to thank the game’s community for supporting him and the character over the years. “As you guys all know, Jensen is one of the characters I've played who is near and dear to my heart,” the actor wrote in the post, “It seems I will always be associated with him and that's just fine with me.” Read more Deus Ex actor Elias Toufexis bids a heartfelt farewell to Adam Jensen and thanks fans for their support: 'I asked for this'Feb 7, 2024 - PC GamerElias Toufexis, the actor behind the gravelly, world-weary voice of Deus Ex lead Adam Jensen, has bid what seems to be a final farewell to the series in a heartfelt message posted to Reddit... The layoffs were, in a year that has already seen thousands of job losses before the end of January, bitterly unsurprising, but the fact that a new Deus Ex had been in development only to be cast aside took many of us unawares... Yes, last week it was Microsoft electing to fire an entire town’s worth of people into the sun following its acquisition of Activision Blizzard, this week it’s Embracer deciding to cut staff at Eidos Montreal and simultaneously do away with a title it’d spent two years working on. Even if it’d seemingly have been Adam Jensen-less, odds are the Deus Ex title in question would’ve been something at least a little bit fun, too. Embracer’s move to cancel the game was first reported by Bloomberg, which suggested that it was an unannounced title that was due to enter production later this year, something which obviously won’t be happening now. No other details regarding what the game would’ve been about or involved seem to have been made public as of yet, though voice actor Elias Toufexis has revealed that he hadn’t been brought in to work on it during the time it’d been in development. One of the most beloved series in PC history, the sci-fi immersive sim, RPG, and FPS has been awaiting a valiant return. Unfortunately, this now seems much less likely, as a new Deus Ex game, which had been in development for around two years, has been officially canceled as Embracer Group makes layoffs at Eidos Montreal. It seems a comeback for Adam Jensen and JC Denton will remain but a dream, at least for the foreseeable future. Read the rest of the story... Well, the publisher doesn’t want to have to rely on them as much going forwards. It’s an idea that makes plenty of sense in a vacuum, but seems a little bit hilarious given the whole ditching of the likes of Tomb Raider and Deus Ex that Square executed in May 2022, when it sold Crystal Dynamics, Eidos Montreal, and Square Enix Montreal to Embracer Group. But, hey, there are other games out there that the publisher could use to help expand its repertoire. This desire to become less dependent on the existing big series Square Enix has at its disposal was outlined by company president Takashi Kiryu in the Q and A section of a November 2023 financial briefing that was only published recently (thanks, GamesRadar). In it, Kiryu (not that one) cites two areas in which he believes Square “to be lacking”, with the first of these being “the limited diversity of our title portfolio”. You want games that are full, that are rich, that have plenty to say and plenty for you to do. Simultaneously, you want something legible - I remember turning on Assassin's Creed Syndicate, the first in-game pop-up telling me I had 150 Codex entries I could read, and immediately feeling encumbered and lost to the point that I didn't want to play. Age of Empires. Half-Life. The Sims. Counter-Strike. Command and Conquer. And of course, Deus Ex. The defining sci-fi saga originally from Ion Storm hasn't seen a mainline release since Deus Ex Mankind Divided back in 2016. Before that, Human Revolution soft rebooted the whole series, and set a fresh standard for both stealth gameplay and videogame drama infused with real-world issues.
