Decksplash

Decksplash, Bossa's multiplayer skateboarding sim, is cancelledNov 10, 2017 - PC GamerBossa Studios announced Decksplash back near the start of the year, and it looked quite promising: "The Rocket League of skateboarding," we called it, following some hands-on time with an alpha build in May. But in October, the studio dropped an ultimatum: If it didn't attract at least 100,000 players during a free week set to begin on November 2, the whole thing would be cancelled.    Today is November 10, which means the free week ended yesterday, and I've got bad news for those of you looking forward to splashed decks in the future. The trial campaign fell well short of its goal (a little under 60,000 total owners, according to SteamSpy), and true to its word, Bossa is shutting 'er down.  "It’s not all tears, though... The Free Week proved what we suspected at the start: Decksplash is a good game, evidenced by its 79-86 Steam score throughout the week. The players who experienced the game liked it, but in the end there just wasn’t enough of them to guarantee a healthy online community and keep the game’s matchmaking alive for the long run," Bossa wrote in the cancellation announcement. "The lesson to take home is that, though not the best, this outcome is a good one for everyone involved: its players won’t spend money on a game that won’t survive the long haul, the team can move on to a new Bossa project with a sense of closure having done their best with Decksplash, and we tried a new way of validating a multiplayer game. Should we have cancelled the game without this experiment, a ‘what if’ would always be there in the back of our minds."  I suppose it's possible that this is an ill-conceived PR stunt, akin to the infamous "GOG is closing" hoax from several years back. But I think that's unlikely. Bossa said it creates "hundreds of games every year during our monthly game jams," the vast majority of which never see the light of day. "Decksplash just went further than the rest before teaching us a thing or two, enabling us to go forth with yet another piece of the creative puzzle we put together every day."  It's not exactly the same thing, but if your heart is heavy over the loss of a scratch for your boarding itch, a free demo for the headed-to-Kickstarter game Session is yours for the takingSurgeon Simulator studio has cancelled Splatoon-esque multiplayer skater DecksplashNov 10, 2017 - EurogamerSurgeon Simulator and I Am Bread developer Bossa Studios has announced that development on its vaguely Splatoon-esque multiplayer skateboard project Decksplash will end after the game failed to reach its 100k player target during last week's free trial. Bossa recently announced that Decksplash's future would be decided by a week-long free trial on Steam. If 100,000 people downloaded and played the game during that time, it would be released in Early Access. If it failed to meet that target, work on the project would cease. Bossa hasn't revealed exactly how many players did log in to shred and spread their ink between November 2nd and November 10th, but it evidently wasn't enough - and now Decksplash is officially no more. It has been quite a nail-biting ride for the team, watching numbers climbing, players having fun, maths, wagers and predictions around the studio done. In the end, we fell short of the 100,000 players we set ourselves as a goal. It’s not all tears, though… The Free Week proved what we suspected at the start: Decksplash is a good game, evidenced by its 79-86 Steam score throughout the week. The players who experienced the game liked it, but in the end there just wasn’t enough of them to guarantee a healthy online community and keep the game’s matchmaking alive for the long run. The lesson to take home is that, though not the best, this outcome is a good one for everyone involved: its players won’t spend money on a game that won’t survive the long haul, the team can move on to a new Bossa project with a sense of closure having done their best with Decksplash, and we tried a new way of validating a multiplayer game. Should we have cancelled the game without this experiment, a ‘what if’ would always be there in the back of our minds. All in all, we create hundreds of games every year during our monthly game jams, the vast majority of them failing to even being shown to the players. Decksplash just went further than the rest before teaching us a thing or two, enabling us to go forth with yet another piece of the creative puzzle we put together every day So from all of us here in the Decksplash team, Thank you for your support and we’ll see you on our next big adventure! Since the event launched on Thursday, there have been 27,261 'first-time downloads', a daily average of around 5,500. Original story: There were strong reactions all round when Bossa Studios announced that it would cancel its skateboard turf-war game Decksplash if it didn't reach 100,000 players during a free week. That free week is now upon us, lasting until next Friday, and so far around 7,000 players have jumped on board since the launch on Thursday, according to Steam Spy. Roughly 14,000 people have downloaded the game for the free week and half have actually played the game, the stats site suggests, which shows that it's attracting interest. But it will have to pick up speed to meet its goal. If you don't know about Decksplash, it's made up of PvP matches in which you and two teammates gain control of parts of an arena by stringing together combos of grinds, spins, and manuals and then splatting down your team's paint on the ground as you land.  As I said, the news that the game could be cancelled before it launched proved controversial, and the reaction was strong enough for Bossa to shoot a video explaining the decision, which you can watch below. For what it's worth, the reactions of Steam users that have tried the game have been mostly positive. Here's a clip of the game in action: Head over to the Steam page if you fancy checking it out. Surgeon Simulator studio's Decksplash needs 100k people to play this week or it's cannedNov 3, 2017 - EurogamerSurgeon Simulator and I Am Bread developer Bossa Studios is taking a unique approach to the fate of its next project, Decksplash. After a year in development, Decksplash's future will be decided by a week-long free trial on Steam. If 100,000 people play the game it will be released in Early Access. Or, if Decksplash misses its target, it is "RIP" for the project. "Like any proud parent, we love Decksplash, but unlike deluded creators, we want to believe that you love it too," Bossa explained in a blog post. "Thus we've devised a 'first of its kind' experiment: The Splash N' Grab! Start a petition and get your local government to discuss the game Now stop reading this and get in game! Splash you on the other side! You asked us why? Here's our answer.Oct 27, 2017 - Community Announcementshttp://cdn.akamai.steamstatic.com/steamcommunity/public/images/clans/27580418/e0c36019f034151fedbaa17e135dbca0694b808b.jpg Why? seems to be the question most of you’ve been asking in response to our upcoming ‘Splash n’ Grab’ weekend, so we’ve put together the following video with Malford to answer exactly that: WHY we’re doing what we’re doing. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ghKs8JeKJbs We at Bossa have seen way too many multiplayer games released without a large enough community to support them, ultimately resulting in a disappointing player experience: dead servers, a lack of dev support, and a dwindling community that eventually fades away to nothing. That doesn’t sound like a lot of fun to us, and so we’re attempting to do things differently. Right now, Decksplash has an awesome community, and without them, the game wouldn’t be what it is today -- FACT -- But while dedicated, they’re a relatively small group and we simply don’t know if there’s sufficient demand for the game outside of them. So we’re leaving it in your capable hands! If we cannot get 100K players to play the game - 100% FREE OF CHARGE! - then that tells us that we probably won’t have enough people at the end of this, who actually intend to pay for the game, and help keep the community thriving. We could always release the game anyway, for a quick cash injection, but that’s just not the Bossa way, and never will be. It wouldn’t do the game justice. It wouldn’t do the studio justice. And most importantly, it wouldn’t do the community justice. So, if you really want make this game a reality, then you know what to do! And that’s the entire point of this exercise - we simply gotta to know if you guys want this. We’ve got the Splash n’ Grab meter prepped and ready to gauge interest, and will be updating it in near-real-time. This is an incredibly exciting period for both us and the community behind Decksplash, and we can’t wait to see what happens! The free week kicks off on the 2nd of November, so mark it in your diary and make Decksplash happen! On board? If Decksplash does not reach 100,000 players during a free week then Bossa Studios will cancel the gameOct 26, 2017 - PC GamerSkateboard turf-war game Decksplash will grind into Early Access on November 10—but only if 100,000 players try it out for free during the preceding week. If it doesn't reach that milestone, then the game is cancelled. Seriously. The free week starts on Steam on November 2 and players can jump in for three-on-three PvP matches in which you gain control of parts of the arena by nailing combos of grinds, spins, and manuals and then splatting down your team's paint on the ground as you land.  Bossa Studios, of Surgeon Simulator and I Am Bread, is the developer, and it's clearly prepared to take a huge risk on this one. 100,000 is no small number—imagine all that effort going down the drain. It's "skate or die", as Bossa has dubbed it. It'll be interesting to see how it goes down with players.  If you do hop in early then any loot, levels and coins (for loot boxes and skateboard customisation) will transfer over to the full game. You'll also receive a unique board set. Mat tried the game out in May and thought it was a neat mash-up of Rocket League and Splatoon. Aside from a few gripes he was impressed: you can read about his time with it here. Here's the Steam page. But we’ve made the decision and it’s time to get this Splash N’ Grab on the go! If we hit that magic 100k, Early Access launch WILL happen on the last day (November 10th), however if we don’t have enough players, then it’s R.I.P Decksplash. Bossa Out! https://media.giphy.com/media/vIZ0U63Ig0uOI/giphy.gif Decksplash is the Rocket League of skateboardingMay 13, 2017 - PC GamerIt's not particularly noteworthy to say Decksplash is Bossa Studios' best controlling game. The developer that brought you purposely over-complicated mechanics in games like Surgeon Simulator and I Am Bread is known for crafting unwieldy experiences. And while these experiences are often fun for a laugh, they're not necessarily fun to play, thanks to their awkwardly difficult controls. Decksplash may be the studio's easiest game to pick up and play, but its skating and tricking have a learning curve that's set at the exact right angle, making your overall improvement as a player all the more satisfying. I only played Decksplash's alpha test, but if Bossa can house their mechanics with more modes and levels, then the British developer could have something very special on its hands. If you called Decksplash a skateboarding game, you wouldn't be wrong. In fact, you definitely control a skateboard as you pull off slick grinds, countless spins, and tricky manuals—albeit without an actual skater standing on it. But it doesn't control like a skateboard. No, it actually plays more like one of those dang soccer-playing cars in Rocket League. You accelerate with the right trigger, jump with the A button, and control the movement of your board with the left stick. Of course, Rocket League doesn't have grinds and manuals—both of which are governed by the X button in Decksplash—and its cars are quite a bit heavier than the understandably lighter skateboards. However, Decksplash's controls are, for the most part, as tight and responsive as Rocket League. My vehicle was a skateboard in the shape of a muscle-bound lobster man Despite the control similarities, you won't be playing soccer in Decksplash. The unique take on skateboarding mostly revolves around its online multiplayer, in which you try to create the biggest combo you can before landing and splashing a coat of paint on the level. You're on a team, and if yours covers more ground than the opposing squad, then you win. While the main mode couldn't be more different, there's much more than just Rocket League's controls in Decksplash's DNA.  Bossa promises loot boxes and skateboard customization, but neither were available in the alpha test. Instead, each time you spawned into a level, you were given a random board. There are a bunch of different shapes and styles, ranging from the classic skateboard to a lingerie-wearing cop. And just like Rocket League, I found myself favouring a very specific shape of vehicle, but in this case, my vehicle was a skateboard in the shape of a muscle-bound lobster man. It definitely seems like there's the possibility for as much customization and fine tuning to your preferences as Rocket League has, and I'm looking forward to seeing just how much that part of the game will grow as development moves forward.  I enjoyed most of my time with Decksplash, but ...Decksplash Alpha 2.01 Patch NotesMay 12, 2017 - Community AnnouncementsPlease make sure you update your game on Steam.
