Starter decks and a more varied run-system! Always wanted to try a Sanity or Damage driven deck? Time to try that out. Or, if you are a player that loves to give themselves over to the "luck of the draw", there is also a chaos starter deck now that will select cards from your unlocked collection. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/45227801/e46eec5ded8d93541e145a24eddbc9be3de12c65.gif Apart from the starter decks (more of them to come as well in the future!), we've also spent some time on revamping the runs themselves. Added to the now "Classic" very first run, where you previously could only re-run pretty much the same thing (albeit with some minor variation in stats/human amount/traits), we now have a run-system that will, every night, pick from a selection of more curated nights. So, where in one run you might have a night where you get a solid group of high health regenerative humans with doctor bags that spawn in just 1 wave, in the next run that very same night might instead have you encounter 6 waves of fragile, steadfast humans with a compass. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/45227801/6e50b2c2e824c0709cdf236ed187b081ad24dfd9.gif The beauty of this system is, that we can keep on adding different curated runs into the mix to make sure you get an increased amount of variations in your runs! As a sneak peek: we're currently creating a set of new cards to add to the game, together with a new starter deck type. And as always, the changelog for this update: Changes Added starter deck selection: Default, Damage, Drain, and Chaos. Added a new run system, to include a variety of nights during a run, that will be differently configured every time you start a new run. Prevent the same cards from showing up immediately when rerolling. Balance: Card: Midnights Strike: Change from Any Human to Solo Human target. Balance: Card: Unending Madness: Change from being Uncommon to Rare. Balance: Card: Rumbling Lure: Banish now by default, Upgrade does not banish but now costs 3AP. Balance: Card: Cascading Mechanism: Default AP from 1 to 2, Upgraded AP from 0 to 1. “Solitary” achievement trigger now works if multiple Mirror Halls are used. Changed the "Play" button in the main menu to say "Continue" when a run is still in progress. Added a global limitation to the number of possible concurrent sounds. Fixes Fixed damage check for “Unseen” achievement trigger. Removed a mirror causing pathfinding issues in the Mirror Hall. Fixed German localization errors for “unheilvolles Omen”, “Nadelstiche” and “Wurzeln zurückerobern”. Fixed Storage Room icon tooltip showing “SACRIFICE” to now say "STORE". A big thank you for playing Deck of Haunts, and for all your wonderful feedback. As developers, we're not done with this game, and if you like our heading (and the game in it's current state of course ;) ), it would be great if you leave us a review, it helps a ton! {STEAM_CLAN_I...Update V1.06 Cloud SavingMay 15, 2025 - Community AnnouncementsThis latest patch brings in Cloud Saving for players using multiple systems to play Deck of Haunts on! First of all, we cannot express our gratitude enough for all the players that joined us on this journey from prototype to Deck of Haunts 1.0. (And now beyond... V1.01-1.02-1.03-...) You have given us motivational and energy boosts along the way and are making sure we're going in the right direction with all the feedback that you're sharing on Steam, Discord and social media. We are still actively working on making Deck of Haunts better every day, and are committed to keep pushing out updates in the near future and beyond. For all of you that left all those nice reviews and messages on the discussions forum, a big thank you from the entire team! ❤️ Now, how did we get here? It started off in late 2019, where the very first concept of Deck of Haunts was laid out, right before the strangeness of 2020 came to haunt us all. We felt we were onto something with that concept. Mind you, it was a time before the market was flooded with a ton of deck builders. Of course it would have been nice to start work on Deck of Haunts right away, but at the time we didn't have the budget or ideal team configuration to bring it to completion. During 2020-2021-2022-2023 we, as so many other indie studios, went full throttle on work for hire for other companies and game studios. Starting off with all the assignments we could get (think VR training for factories to configurators for conventions), we luckily could transition fulltime into the games industry with all of our work for hire assignments. Then... at the turn of the new year, 2024, we felt we were finally ready to tackle that concept that we had been dreaming of since late 2019, Deck of Haunts. After securing the budget that was needed to sustain our 5-headed team during a little more over a year development, we released the breaks on the production train and started work on our haunted domain! As a team we feel like we were able to make a fun core game loop, dressed up in a neat gritty Art Deco styling. We definitely want to steadily push out updates for the game, and build on it, together with the player base. We have a ton of ideas of where to go from here, so, lets go! Deck of Haunts is available now on Steam. Deck of Haunts - Dev Blog #4 - VFX by Philippe MesottenApr 22, 2025 - Community AnnouncementsHey ho! Philippe here, VFX artist (among other roles in our small team) for Deck of Haunts. For those of you not in the know, when I write VFX, I refer to Visual Effects. ✨ I've been pumping out explosions, sparks and magic for some years now, but never in this dark grungy and almost isometric style. (You can find more about the art style here) Real time visual effects are not only the cherry on top of everything else, but are also used to better convey gameplay elements towards the player. By combining elements from texturing, modeling, tech-art and animation, you can conjure up all sorts of interesting illusions to breathe life into the game world. The most important part doing VFX for Deck of Haunts, is that you have to put the emphasis on the player being the house. I had to keep this in mind with every particle effect I made, since it is really easy to fall into the trap of just making everything look "magical", rather than grounded in the house. To give you an example, this is the effect we had at the very early stages of the project, for "Shifting Hallways" AKA teleporting a human to a random room: {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/45227801/764770fe79e58e580d2220a9c95881cd35b3d423.gif As you can see it has more something of a wizards finger snap & teleport, than the actual house doing something to the human. Here is a rework of the effect. Some planks coming out of the ground and pushing the human into another room: {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/45227801/102c6820c595b91a8b8aca84c31ef162b1cd7581.gif Of course it all needs to go fast to not put a drag on gameplay. In our recently released "Release Date Trailer" you can see some of the effects that I loved making, for instance the dissolving of a card when it gets banished or the lightning storm towards the end of the video: Being a VFX artist, a lot of times that also means optimizing the game. Here you can see the before and after of a specific ground material. The less red, the better the performance. Profit! {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/45227801/b404d3f0c0c19d1fb5749293913e12421de24f47.jpg {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/45227801/887f3049f4b5f715a43574d04c354252ea8792c6.jpg There are a ton more of effects I'd like to share with you, but... You'll have to play the game to find out what they all are, not spoiling any more ;). If you've made it until here, well done! Thank you for reading and I hope to see all your cool house builds on socials or on this hub, once the game is out 🖖 PS: Make sure to tell your friends to wishlist Deck of Haunts, it helps a ton! 🔔Blood Bar TycoonApr 17, 2025 - Community AnnouncementsHey! I am Willem, a 3D Artist for Deck of Haunts, but alongside that, with our limited capacity, I have had the opportunity to delve deeper and work on something that has interested me for a while, Sound Design. It was a challenge but also a fun experience to learn while working on the Sound Effects in Deck of Haunts, so let's take a deeper dive into the process of making these creepy and twisted sounds you will hear in our Haunted Mansion. The process Starting off with no experience, I relied heavily on library sound effects. I slowly started building a library from free sfx (Sound Effects) I gathered online which I usually mixed together with some instrument plugins in Reaper and added sound effects on top of, such as equalizers, delays, reverbs, and so on. However, relying only on library sfx has its limitations. As the experience grew, so did my confidence in recording my own sounds. I started using props such as deck cards to create the sfx for the hover, selecting, and playing of the cards in game. I even started using my own voice. At the beginning it was a real challenge to not cringe when I started doing this, but using your own voice gives you more freedom. I used it to add some grunting noises to the human when they die, take damage, or when you turn them completely insane. However, my favorite recordings are the whispers of the house when playing your cards to torture or scare the humans inside. These whispers need to feel mysterious, spooky and scary. To achieve this, I recorded myself whispering some sentences in Latin or some gibberish. Usually I would record the same sentence a few times with different tone, speed, and loudness and throw these together in Reaper. There I overlap them, reverse some, and to make them all sound a bit more spooky, I add some pitch variation, some reverb, and delays on them. It's a fun process when you get the hang of it. Preventing chaos Working on the sound effects from a top down perspective, with an overview of the entire playing field, was quite the challenge.
