As you know, to celebrate 16 million active users on DEATH STRANDING, we have launched a special Photo Mode campaign that will run for a year (December 2023 to November 2024). To ensure as many Porters as possible can get involved, we're also running this event here on Steam! Each month, entries will be accepted according to the theme of each month, and the 10 best photos will be selected. Out of those selected 10, KOJIMA PRODUCTIONS staff will vote for one “Photo of the Month” winner. The 12 photos of the monthly winners will be used as the cover for each month on the 2025 KOJIMA PRODUCTIONS calendar. This calendar will be sent to the Photo of the Month winners as a prize. APRIL DETAILS April's theme is "Movement" End date for submissions: April 25th 2024. Submit your best photo mode shots here in the comments to be in with a chance of getting selected! CAMPAIGN RULES The following rules will apply for this Photo Mode campaign. Please turn off the UI when taking your picture (Photo Mode menu settings). Do not use frames and logos when taking your picture (Photo Mode menu settings). Do not use other apps to edit the pictures other than the ones in the game’s Photo Mode. Please submit your own photos(Submission will be invalid if you apply using other people’s pictures). If you are capturing it vertically (i.e. portrait), go to the Roll menu and change the settings to tilt it 90° or -90° beforehand. We recommend an aspect ratio of 16:9 (9:16 if vertical). The works selected in the top 10 and Photo of the Month may be used on KOJIMA PRODUCTION's website or social media. I never played a game that made me feel so close to the character and the story like DEATH STRANDING did. It's captivating, immersive, fun, and gorgeous. I've loved everything about it. sevenwndrs - What makes me a fan? The dream team of course!! Hideo Kojima, Norman Reedus, and Guillermo del Toro! I came to DEATH STRANDING for the talent and stayed for the amazing gameplay and lore! ♥️ Barmy Deer - DEATH STRANDING is one of the most unique ludic experiences of all time! Easily my favourite Hideo Kojima's product. Playing as Sam Porter Bridges lets me sci-fi hike, speculate on the lore richness, explore the enchanting landscapes, and try out different approaches in the ranked challenges! For these reasons, I've played DEATH STRANDING for 600+ hours. Lil scooby - I got DEATH STRANDING at the end of 2020. I think I bought it because I was a big fan of the Walking Dead/ Norman Reedus, and also the trailer looked really cool; I had never played MGS or even heard of Hideo Kojima before. I instantly fell in love with the game. It sounds silly, but it gave me purpose again in my life in a dark time. The music, the atmosphere, the comfort I found in delivering, just everything about it made me feel so content and safe. It became my comfort game. The community strongly spreads the game's message, "Keep on keeping on" which were the exact words I needed to hear at that time. Shadmehrphoenix - I have three reasons: the first is because of the story of this game. In my opinion, this is the most emotional story about life and human beings. I've been playing video games consistently for 35 years and I love them as much today as I did when I was a kid. DEATH STRANDING is a gaming highlight for me. Hideo Kojima and Yoji Shinkawa were my first teenage idols so it was a given really. I can’t express my love for the DEATH STRANDING DIRECTOR’S CUT world, characters, story, lore, design and soundtrack enough. That is a big part of why I play the game. I feel like I can connect to the isolation side of it. What is it about this community that makes it so special to you? The people in the DEATH STRANDING community are some of the sweetest I've ever met. They're always so positive and supportive of one another! The DEATH STRANDING community is filled with talented people too. From cosplayers and artists, to virtual photographers! I'm currently obsessed with @Frau_Haku and her cosplay of Fragile. I suggest people go and see those beautiful pictures. I put on Low Roar and stroll through the world! I feel like there’s a chemical reaction in my brain that makes me see the world of DEATH STRANDING as an art book when Low Roar is playing in the background. They go hand-in-hand so well when it's time to take photos. Thank you for having me. My name is Daniar. I am a comic book artist from Kazakhstan. I have been drawing since childhood, thanks to my Mom and Dad and my sister, who provided me with books and American comics from the beginning. What is it about this game that makes it so special to you? I've spent 393 hours in DEATH STRANDING and 255 hours in DEATH STRANDING DIRECTOR’S CUT. DEATH STRANDING is an outstanding game. Its story, visuals and music are very beautiful to me. The gameplay is rich and unique. I just enjoy walking in that magnificent virtual landscape of UCA using structures left by online Porters. It brings me peace. Sometimes ideas for fan art come spontaneously and sometimes I spend hours thinking. After finding an idea I start quickly sketching. If it doesn’t look bad, I proceed to model and arrange the simple scene and fix the camera angle and FOV in SketchUp with my 3D dummies. It helps me to keep the body proportions and perspective. After this, I simply make a screenshot of an arranged 3D scene and draw on top of it in Photoshop. Sketch, line, shadows, color and color overlay FX. Can you tell us a bit more about yourself and what makes you a DEATH STRANDING fan? My name is Shinobi, I'm a 42 year old Frenchman living in Japan for 12 years now. I do virtual photography daily and occasionally help studios create their photo modes when they accept my help. What made me a DEATH STRANDING fan is Hideo Kojima himself. I have been a long-time fan since MGS1. I was so excited to see him working on a new IP and creation. Then the incredible intro of the game, the walking, the loneliness... so many unique feelings came to me in the first couple hours of playing... What was it about the feature that appealed to you? First it was a natural meeting between my love for traditional photography and my love for gaming. You know when you're hiking, the landscape is beautiful but you're kind of focused on your breath, your effort, your goal. Sure, you see the environment and breathe the fresh air, but it's really when you stop and look around that suddenly you're amazed by where you are. That's the only way you'll notice this little blueberry bush and maybe a bird nest above you. THIS is exactly what virtual photography is to me. A formidable opportunity to see every detail that artists and developers took time to work on. Then the second phase starts and you add your own creativeness. The game is yours for a moment. You decide how you want to portray it. It becomes your world and your canvas. Great to have you on board for this month’s #DSPorterSpotlight piece! We love your passion for DEATH STRANDING, as well as your incredible art and cosplay. Can you tell us a bit more about yourself and what makes you a DEATH STRANDING fan? Thanks so much for having me! I’m Leo, a self-taught hobbyist artist. I began drawing as a kid, then took a long hiatus in my 20’s, letting my art fall to the side. I then became inspired to pick it back up after playing through DEATH STRANDING. It truly was the precipice for the revival of my creative passion, and I relearned the fundamentals of art through the process. DEATH STRANDING was my first experience with a game from Hideo Kojima, and I had no idea what awaited me. It was an emotional roller coaster going through the game, especially since I was expecting my own little BB at the time (who is now very much out of her tank by now), and with the onset of Covid and being in isolation for so long, the game hit a little deeper than it would have at other points in my life. It came at the perfect time. The themes and aesthetics presented in DEATH STRANDING spoke to me in a way that few games or movies had previously. I’ve played through the game multiple times and even still to this day, there are moments that get me misty eyed. I’m just an emotional wreck in the last few chapters (in the best way, of course). I really love the moments when I’m walking through some picturesque landscape, and a Low Roar song triggers. Music plays a huge part in my creative process. I’m very motivated by lyrics and the overall feel of a song. I tend to listen to very emotionally heavy music, and I really strive to put those same emotions into my art. Once I have an idea, I work relatively quickly. I tend to base my art on photos that I’ve taken in game. My digital paintings take roughly 4-6 hours total, while my sketchier traditional art takes an hour or two. I really love to put a lot of detail into my digital paintings, and more feeling into my traditional art. My favorite part of any piece are the eyes. There’s almost a spiritual connection when finishing the eyes. My cosplay process is much more analytical, and I am all about the details, even those that aren’t front and center. I spent an embarrassingly long amount of time trying to figure out all of the text on the Bridges uniform, and did my best to match up the keys to the ones on the keychain in the game. Thank you for inviting me. I am a self-taught artist and from an early age had a passion for video games, as well as the world of art and drawing. Growing up, I found myself immersed in the worlds created for games and became fascinated by the drawings and characters I encountered. My passion for video games and art continued to grow and I began to explore the possibilities of combining these two passions. I started to create my own art, inspired by my favorite games. Could you talk us through your creative process? During the first stage, I make simple pencil sketches of the drawing I want to make, limiting myself to the guiding lines and outlines of the basic shapes. Once the sketch is complete, I try to refine it by shaping it, adding details, colors and shading to create a more realistic and three-dimensional representation of the object or character. It usually takes me somewhere between 15 to 20 hours to complete an A3 drawing.
