Detroit: Become Human and Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 lead busy month for PlayStation NowFeb 2, 2021 - EurogamerA new month means a fresh roster of additions to PlayStation Now, and February's a busy one for Sony's subscription service, ushering in Call of Duty: Black Ops 3, Detroit: Become Human, Darksiders Genesis, Little Nightmares, and more. Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 joined Activision's ceaseless procession of franchise instalments in 2015, sending the series' reliably solid FPS action to the far-flung future of 2065. The high-tech-tinged end result earned itself a Eurogamer Recommended award back in the day, with contributor Edwin Evans-Thirlwell writing, "Where Treyarch's single-player struggles, the deftly tuned multiplayer soars, delivering a Call of Duty that's rich with options." As for Detroit: Become Human, it's another heavily cinematic narrative adventure from the minds at Quantic Dream. This time, the studio serves up a sci-fi thriller focussed on the plight of a group of androids - and while its attempts to draw parallels with the likes of the civil rights movement are clumsy, it's by far the developer's most disciplined, engaging outing yet. "With this glib, rabble-rousing and admittedly enjoyable thriller," wrote Oli Welsh in his review, "Quantic Dream has finally delivered on the promise of its interactive storytelling format". August's Game Pass offerings include Final Fantasy 7 HD and Man of MedanAug 5, 2020 - EurogamerAnother month means another selection of Game Pass additions for PC and Xbox One stampeding over the horizon, and August's newly revealed offerings include Final Fantasy 7 HD, The Dark Pictures Anthology: Man of Medan, and Darksiders: Genesis. Starting with August's console-only additions, Darksiders: Genesis and Man of Medan both arrive tomorrow, 6th August. The former offers a top-down, dungeon-crawler-inspired spin on the long-running action-RPG franchise, this time featuring War and Strife as playable characters, and is supposedly pretty entertaining. Eurogamer's Christian Donlan reckoned it offered "the same old pleasures for this entirely pleasurable series," in his review, "albeit with the odd new trick and delivered from a new perspective." The spookily enjoyable Man of Medan, meanwhile, is developer Supermassive Games' first entry in its Dark Pictures horror anthology series - a sort of smaller-scale extension of the team's Until Dawn. Like that game, it's a heavily cinematic narrative yarn, in which players are able to direct the action - and determine who lives or dies - to some degree, based on their choices. Man of Medan's nautical tale of teen horror doesn't quite stick the landing, but it's still a decent couple of hours entertainment, particularly with friends. I always associate them with cowboys, now. But this is not the Cowboy Game. This is Darksiders Genesis. Cheers & Enjoy Your THQ Nordic TeamDarksiders: Genesis review - delightful demon-thwacking from a new perspectiveDec 5, 2019 - EurogamerSockets and gems! I love sockets and gems. So imagine my delight when, a few minutes into Darksiders: Genesis, a fresh perspective on the Hellish Zelda-alike series about monsters and demons, I clicked on a stray tab to find a whole page of sockets just waiting for gems. Let me try to explain this. Enemies in Genesis sometimes drop special gems known as cores. The core for each enemy type is unique and bestows a unique perk. The more you have of each core, the more they level up and the perks get better. (This can get rather grindy, incidentally.) Now, to access these perks you have to put them in sockets on the socket tree. And here's where it gets fun. Behold the socket tree! Sockets come in three flavours, and while you can put any old core in any old socket, if you match socket flavour to core flavour you get extra synergy. Throw in special cores that really big baddies and bosses drop and you have a recipe for fun. I have spent many hours in Genesis switching in and out sockets and watching what happens to the overall power levels of my two characters as I do so. It's nice to see the numbers go up. That's Genesis, isn't it? In the beginning, developers created the sockets and the gems. The numbers went up and it was good. Strife, the Rider of the White Horse, is both impulsive and witty, true to the motto "Shoot first, ask questions later" or "Two Guns, one Horseman". He is the one with blood on his boots and a punchline on his lips. He fought countless enemies with his two best friends (read: pistols), Mercy and Redemption, as well as the protection of his impenetrable armor. Always by his side is Mayhem, Strife's phantom steed. In Darksiders Genesis you can choose to play either War or his brother Strife, and head into combat side by side in two player cooperative mode (couch co-op trash talk, but also online). The story takes place before the events of the original game when Lucifer, the enigmatic and deceptive demon king, plots to upset the Balance by granting power to master demons throughout Hell. CheersIsometric spin-off Darksiders Genesis coming to PC and Stadia in DecemberOct 22, 2019 - EurogamerDarksiders Genesis, developer Airship Syndicate's top-down take on Darksiders' usual third-person action-adventure formula, will heading to PC and Stadia on 5th December, with a console release scheduled for 14th February next year. Genesis unfolds prior to the events of the original Darksiders, and marks the debut of Strife - the "gunslinging" fourth horseyperson of the apocalypse - as a playable character in the series. Players can expect a new story, exploring the origins of the Seven Seals, plus ample action as Strife and his brother War tussle their way through the forces of heaven and hell. In two-player co-op (available online and locally), that means one character per player - with War focussing on sword-based melee attacks and Strife favouring ranged combat - while solo players will need to swap between the horsebros on-the-fly. Read more Genesis is to Darksiders what Lara Croft and The Guardian of Light was to Tomb RaiderJun 17, 2019 - EurogamerIt's tempting to think of Darksiders: Genesis as Darksiders does Diablo but, while they may look very much alike at first glance, the comparison is actually some way wide of the mark. An isometric view is about as deep as the similarities go - the intention in developing Darksiders: Genesis, Airship Syndicate CEO Joe Madureira told me at E3, was to make a true Darksiders game despite the new camera angle. So while you might have been expecting sedate, meditative auto-attacks as per Blizzard's dungeon crawler, Genesis offers the exact same mix of hack-and-slash attacks and special abilities you'll remember from the core series; just, again, with a different camera angle. This was certainly born out in the combat but, more interestingly, in an ambitious platforming section that did some interesting things in terms of level traversal. There's always been more than a touch of The Legend of Zelda to Darksiders, in my opinion, and I'm pleased to say that same spark is very much a part of the experience here. Genesis offers both single-player and split-screen coop and so, as you might expect, comes packing two protagonists. War, franchise favourite, is joined by Strife, who makes his first appearance as a playable character in a Darksiders game. Packing his trademark twin revolvers and seven different types of ammunition, Strife is very much a ranged character, whereas War is every bit the melee focused brute you'll remember from the first Darksiders. In co-op, each player controls one horseman throughout, but in single-player you're free to swap between the two at will.
