'The Ghost Ship' survival mode and 'Jolly Roger' casual mode added!Mar 13, 2025 - Community AnnouncementsAhoy there Sea Rats! It’s been quite some time since our last post but we’re super excited to launch a big content update today just in time to celebrate the Steam Spring sale! This new content drop includes two brand-new game modes, balance changes to the in-game economy system, enhanced enemy and boss behaviour patterns, improved UI and map quality of life, two additional VO languages, and minor bug and achievement fixes! There’s a lot to cover, so read on for a breakdown of what's included. NOTE: This update is currently live on all versions EXCEPT for Nintendo Switch! We expect the Switch version to be updated in the next week or so, thanks for your patience! New gameplay mode: ‘Jolly Roger’ (casual) mode The first of the two new game modes has been designed to address player feedback relating to the game’s difficulty and cater to a more casual play experience. The ‘Jolly Roger’ mode can be selected when you begin a new story campaign OR any time you change character when visiting Wu Yun during a campaign. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/39297607/91bfcf6519560f8af05f83a8656f985897d05824.png This mode makes the following significant changes to the core gameplay: Contact damage has been removed so you will only receive damage from enemies when they attack you. To complement this, most enemies no longer block your movement and can be passed through. Enemies only respawn in rooms if you interact with Wu Yun. This means that you can explore the environment more freely, and can no longer farm enemies by immediately re-entering cleared rooms. You can now warp to unlocked ancestral doors from anywhere on the map and are therefore no longer required to backtrack to specific rooms. All enemies have reduced health. Player characters inflict more damage. New gameplay mode: ‘The Ghost Ship’ (wave survival) mode On the flip side, the second game mode introduces a much more challenging experience in the form of an arcade-style wave survival mode that should appeal to players who love classic beat ‘em ups and racing against the clock! {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/39297607/b2d252259424b53094dd5a62d322ae5de1beb809.gif ‘The Ghost Ship’ mode can be selected directly from the main menu and features: 1-4 players must fight to clear 10 waves, with each wave consisting of a wide variety of enemies and bosses from the main story. Special abilities such as double jump and air dash are unlocked by default and will be essential for avoiding taking damage within such a confined space. Once a wave has been cleared, pick between 3 different stat buffs or powerful items to increase your chances of survival. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/39297607/ed5d4577aa87465b01d939578368d95f61a3dc5b.png After certain ‘milestone’ waves you’ll also unlock additional bonuses in the form of new ‘inner element’ magical abilities and magic slots. We’re excited to share with you our upcoming plans for the upcoming 1.4.0 patch as well as reveal a FREE content drop which adds an entirely new gameplay mode! {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/39297607/1bd5a1951421c1f895c5243064d1293cd0ce5dbd.png Thank you all for the love and support so far with Curse of the Sea Rats, your feedback has helped us implement three waves of updates so far including: 1.0.2: Rebalanced Character Skills and Robert Garfield’s Store Prices for a smoother and fairer experience along with several bug fixes 1.1.2: More bug fixes and changes to the late-game progression and final sequence to make the experience feel less grind-y. 1.3.7: Major improvements to the combat system including animation cancelling, improved hitbox detection, more dynamic and responsive platforming, disabled pitfall deaths, improved Map UI, and so many more quality-of-life changes! The improvements won’t stop there, as mentioned we are now working towards the next big patch, 1.4.0. This update will add an enemy log menu to showcase which enemies (and how many of them) the player has defeated, improvements to the player inventory UI, and additional changes to boss balancing. 1.4.0 is scheduled to go live later this Summer. This brings us to an exciting announcement, we’re currently putting the finishing touches on a Major Free Content Update! “The Ghost Ship” adds a new Survival Mode that tasks players with defeating increasingly more challenging waves of enemies and bosses one after another! If the player(s) can clear a wave they will receive a reward in the form of a usable item, attack or defence buff before progressing onto the next wave. After certain ‘milestone’ waves player characters will also unlock additional bonuses in the form of new ‘inner element’ magical abilities and skills. But be warned however, if all players are defeated progress will be lost! When playing through The Ghost Ship your fastest clear times will be logged after each wave so you can challenge yourself to smash your existing records! Hurt animations have been shortened. Hitboxes when sliding have been improved. Character Control General Rebalanced the skill tree for all four characters. All the attacks' ranges have been increased to better adjust the slashes to their hitboxes. David Douglas Run Attack's momentum has been reduced and its speed has been increased. Down Air Attack’s boost has been increased and its preparation speed has been increased. Parry animation has been reduced and recovers faster. Improvements to the Fireball attack. Akane Yamakawa Faster recovery after parrying. Changed the hits per second of the Water Shield attack. Bussa Run Attack's momentum has been reduced and its speed has been increased. Q: Can you tell us a bit about the process of designing the 4 playable heroes? Yeray: David Douglas was the first character we developed. He was the first one we talked about and the first character to be created. He’s the most balanced character, both in offensive and defensive capabilities and is the ideal character to start with if you are not sure which combat style you like the most. Douglas is basically for everyone! {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/39297607/bd6113546c85a4cb3d7faeac5e3d01935366593d.gif Alex: It was important to us from the beginning, that each character had to play differently and have a unique role in combat. Buffalo Calf is unique compared to the rest of the Sea Rats, since she has a lot of ranged abilities and is extremely fast and nimble. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/39297607/f8f2fd144ab10146bc042898309f5a1a58365b2b.gif Yeray: She can also become invisible, throw elemental projectiles, and execute multi-directional ariel attacks… In contrast, Douglas has only his mid-range pistol and fire attacks. Each of the characters is tied to an element, Douglas uses his firearms to channel his magic, while Buffalo harnesses electricity through her throwing knives and tomahawks. Alex: Then, as a counterpoint, we have Bussa. He is the tankiest character by far, with more hit points than the other heroes. Instead of a parry ability, Bussa can hold his block and stay on guard for a while. We also think he’s the friendliest of the four characters (laughs). {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/39297607/797aa8ba39be343d4d563634d2c43549f7ae4ffd.gif Yeray: While his attacks are slow, they do quite a bit of damage! Bussa’s gameplay style embodies his inner element, which is Earth, so on the outside he’s hard like granite! But despite this he does have a softer and more sensitive side which you’ll hopefully see as the adventure progresses. Then we have Akane, the youngest and also the smallest! But beware, as a warrior of the shogun she’s pretty fierce and has some of the strongest attacks in the game! Akane is quite agile but has less physical resistance to damage and as a result loses health quickly. She ultimately puts everything into her attack and uses versatile water magic to overcome the enemy. Q: Can you tell us about the core concept of the game and its main characters? Dani: Curse of the Sea Rats is a classic Metroidvania, but with a strong narrative component. Aside from what would be typical Metroidvania elements like combat and exploration, you will find yourself empathizing a lot with the character you choose. You’ll also discover many side characters throughout the game, and by interacting with them will learn more about their backstories and needs. With this, we also try to make you smile from time to time, humor is a key part of the game! Q: What can you tell us about the incident on board the HMS Barfleur and Flora Burn’s plan? Dani: The game begins with the British ship, HMS Barfleur, returning to England from the Caribbean with a hold full of prisoners. Among these prisoners are our protagonists, four individuals each with their own unique backstories. While they are not necessarily common criminals, they are lawbreakers in the eyes of the British Empire, and must stand trial for their crimes. Imprisoned alongside them is the notorious pirate captain Flora Burn, who possesses a mysterious ancient artefact, the Eye of the Serpent, that she stole (in a part of the story that is not going to be revealed now). She uses this artefact to turn all the Barfleur’s crew and its prisoners into rats, allowing her to escape along with her nefarious crew. And this is where the game begins. Q: So what exactly is the Eye of the Serpent and who is Flora Burn? {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/39297607/5b88b48ababc41de4e4db563203fc73fc7465f39.png Dani: The Eye of the Serpent is comprised of an amulet and a ring. To recover their human form, the prisoners must reunite these pieces in order to invoke the artefact’s power again and reverse the curse. The artefact is a kind of “magic lamp”, with a spirit inside that grants wishes. But at the same time, it embodies the concept of yin and yang, of good and evil. When both pieces are together they allow you to fulfil any wish. But when separated, good and evil are no longer balanced. The amulet is the good half where Wu Yun, the heroes’ guide, resides. The ring is the evil half, possessed by a serpentine spirit that Flora Burn uses to increase her magical powers! However, Flora Burn is not inherently evil. She’s a pirate captain who travels the Caribbean and does what she pleases, and her life philosophy means that she won’t bow to any state, to any government, living in freedom. By transforming everyone onboard the HMS Barfleur into rats, Flora was able to kidnap Admiral Blacksmith’s son and make her escape to the Irish shore! Be careful not to get webbed in the Caterpillar’s sticky silk or risk being swarmed. As the name suggests, the caverns are brimming with Giant Bats ready to swoop in on unsuspecting victims. We’re back with another Boss spotlight for Curse of the Sea Rats with a close look at another of Flora’s wicked crew. Flora Burn has truly sailed to the ends of the Earth gathering the most vicious pirates from all four corners to help in her quest for power. One such pirate, Rama Cinnamon, likes to think of herself as a strategic genius and likes to taunt her foes. Armed with a whip and her wit, Rama sits atop the very apex of Erui’s forest, lying in wait for the Sea Rats. Like the Cliff of the Winds, you’ll need to be quick on your feet to traverse the dense jungle-like area. As you reach the summit be cautious, Rama has set several traps lying in wait for you… Five Lashes Be Owed Using her whip, Rama has some incredible reach with her attacks as she cracks it down on the exposed branch arena. Sporting two curved blades, Sharpie certainly lives up to her name. Inconceivable! You’ll need to be fast on your feet if you hope to chase down Sharpie the Sharp. With harsh winds attempting to upset the balance of anyone foolish enough to descend its treacherous cliffside, the narrow platforms hold little comfort for anyone caught off-guard. If that wasn’t enough, Flora has placed several marksmen in strategic locations to take down any pursuers, taking pot-shots whenever you are at your most vulnerable. Keep an ear out for the enraged cries of the local puffin population as well. Once they see someone encroaching on their territory they’ll dive, beak first, at intruders to protect their eggs! You Seem a Decent Fellow Once you’ve successfully manoeuvred your way down the cliffside and braced the icy winds, Sharpie will be waiting to stop you in your tracks. Unlike her crewmates, Sharpie is more willing to embrace you as a fellow prisoner and openly welcomes you into the folds of Flora’s crew! Your refusal to join her however will soon eradicate any initial good-will she had towards you… A pirate through and through, Sharpie is perhaps the deadliest swordsman on the island. Now we shift our attention to another member of her ruthless gang, the mysterious and cunning vampire rat, Murat Reis. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/39297607/62aeefb2f4caccfe184e0ff1e35f0d0e71e9af26.png Bat to the Bone To reach Murat Reis, you’ll need to head down into the depths of Flying Rat’s Hole. Filled with deadly protruding spikes, a dexterous set of paws will be required to navigate the various tunnels beneath the Shellfish Rocks. Once you’ve successfully ducked and dived your way through the first few sections of the cave system, you’ll be faced with the locked door to Murat’s domain which can only be opened using a special key. Past this, and descending deeper and deeper, you’ll eventually come face to face with the villainous vampire himself! Love at First Bite On top of his impeccable dress sense, Murat Reis possesses a unique set of weapons and vampiric abilities which make him a formidable foe indeed. Upon entering the cavernous lair of Murat Reis you’ll immediately notice the exceptionally tall ceiling. Murat Reis makes good use of this space by flying and levitating. Today we’ll be kicking off a new series of posts dedicated to showcasing some of the many varied bosses that you’ll be encountering throughout your mission to save Admiral Blacksmith’s son from the clutches of the wicked Captain Flora Burn! Many of these powerful foes are in fact elite members of the pirate-witch’s nefarious crew tasked with stopping you from achieving your ultimate goal. The very first member of this dastardly bunch is the barrel-tossing, wise-cracking glutton, Fatso. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/39297607/67b729924cba0e5491a7973459f7a189e0eb596f.png Fatso is a large and intimidating bilge rat who makes up for his lack of speed and table manners with his immense strength! Fatso also happens to love a good party and so carries around a large barrel wherever he goes… You’ll find Fatso in the Shipwreck Beach area, literally blocking your path forwards, so you’ll need to best him in a good old-fashioned scrap if you want to continue your adventure. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/39297607/b29c9bc75581de333790962bc95a62b15ba24a34.jpg The barrel-toting ruffian has no issue with swinging his weight around. Avoid his big sweeping attacks or be whacked across the room! Fatso loves to fight but can also get a bit carried away, if you get hit by his body slam attack, he’ll pause and have good belly laugh. Use this window of opportunity to get in a few licks before he composes himself for another swing. His barrel isn’t just for partying either, during the fight Fatso will shake up the fizzy contents and use the resulting gas explosion to launch himself towards you! {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/39297607/c34f3214396ee18a40f17a36d9ed5090c258dd3c.gif The last thing to watch out for are his smaller, spiked barrels which he hurls across the floor. I Put A Spell on You By channelling magical energy through a piece of the fabled Eye of the Serpent, Flora weaves a diabolical curse which transforms everyone on the HMS Barfleur into rats! As an insurance policy, Flora kidnaps the Admiral’s son and begins transforming the local flora and fauna into ferocious adversaries. Intriguingly, every member of Flora’s entourage that you defeat will yield a golden tooth. What could these mysterious items mean? Collect the set and find out! The Eye of the Serpent On the night the curse was unleashed, the Pirate Witch attempted to steal The Eye of the Serpent, a magical, gem-encrusted artefact. However, she only made away with the gem, ensconced within the ring she wears, leaving the rest of the amulet behind. Unaware of its true power, Admiral Blacksmith entrusts the amulet to you in the hopes it will aid you in retrieving his son. Now, guided by the wise and powerful Wu Yun, you must stop Flora Burn and her crew from becoming too powerful, retrieve the other half of the artefact, and perhaps learn more about its true nature...
