Due to this being the first one, we are classifying this as ‘Beta Tournament’, so please bear with us if there are any issues and contact [email protected]. Join the tournament here. This Tournament will feature 3 rounds with 3 different scenarios: Round 1: Matrix Tournament #1: A 25 minute battle of a US patrol against a Syrian ambush. Round 2: Ambush in al Fubar: A 50 minute battle. Stryker platoon is stopped by an ambush. Rescue is on its way, but will it be too late?. Round 3: Wadi Scouts: A 45 minute battle. Stryker cavalry unit is tasked with scouting out defenses along a Wadi. Before joining the tournament, please take a moment and carefully read these instructions that are specific to all Combat Mission Tournaments: Because of the way that Combat Mission’s original “play by email” system works, both game files have an in-game field for password protection of the file. This field should be left blank. For the US side the password has been selected before the battles were sent and that field is to be left blank. You can use a password for the Russian side but it isn’t needed because the Tournament feature handles protection from cheating without using the in game system. The Tournament will have you playing 2 individual battles where you are playing both sides of the same battle. If you get into the game before your opponent, you will see 1 game turn to play. If your opponent has gotten there first then you will see 2 turn files and each turn thereafter should have 2 files. Once a tournament begins you will receive the files in the "Saved Game and PBEM" drop menu under Automated PBEM++ In Progress. You will receive email notifications when your opponent has sent you turns. You will need a Matrix user name and password to play any tournament (or PBEM++ battle). If you don't have one already you can get one here. The UK's DSTL, a research arm of the British Government's Ministry of Defence that houses their wargaming team, makes use of the software alongside other games like Command, as well as physical tabletop set-ups. A recent initiative currently doing the rounds in defence circles, especially when it comes to professional wargames and their contribution to the defence industry, is trying to include a more diverse range of voices and representation. The Derby House Principles (Derby House, Liverpool UK was the location of the Western Approaches Tactical Unit during WWII) have been supported by many leading professional wargame institutions, and now those principles are being brought into Combat Mission. In partnership with Slitherine and the developers over at Battlefront, DSTL is recruiting for a new range of voice talent to add the ambiance to the game. Read the rest of the story... I'm as surprised as everyone else is at this as Battlefront always seemed to be a holdout against 'corporates', insisting on using their own anti-piracy methods and requiring players to jump through hoops to update. They actually lost me as a customer for a while after Combat Mission: Afrika Korps where the game CD had such a weird copy protection system that the only way I was able to get it to run was to download a cracked version! They drew me back in with Combat Mission Shock Force, and then again when Shock Force 2 arrived on the scene. However, when the last update for SF2 came out it took me back to the old days as the update installed to a sub-directory first and then kept looping, creating sub-directory after sub-directory. Eventually, after spending some time on the forums, I got the update to work only to find all the unit names were screwed up! The only reason I'm nursing my grudges against Battlefront is that, to me, the move to Steam (and to Slitherine) seems to be a really great idea that I wish they'd done sooner. The steam update system works brilliantly without any user intervention and I've never had a problem with any of the games I've bought there. Current owners of Shock Force 2 will be issued with Steam keys and I really can't see a good reason why they won't move across. I know there are some folk who detest Steam, but I'm OK with using it if it gives me an easier life. Read the rest of the story... Battlefront's simulation-heavy wargames have only been available from the developer's official online storefront for years, and not only is Shock Force 2 on Steam now, it's also deeply discounted - another rarity for Battlefront. For the duration of its first week on Steam, you can pick up Combat Mission Shock Force 2 for 30% off the list price. That puts the base game at $41.99 USD / £32.54 until September 7. Its three DLC packs, which include expansions for NATO Forces, British Forces, and US Marines, remain at their standard price point of $34.99 / £27.79 individually, but you get a 38% discount on the complete set, which reduces the price of Shock Force 2 and all three expansions from $164.96 to $102.86. That's on the fairly expensive side for a game that's nearly two years old, but Combat Mission Shock Force 2 is a serious piece of wargaming software. It's serious enough that Battlefront does brisk business with professional military trainers around the world, who have used Combat Mission software for various military training purposes over the years. Combat Mission: Shock Force 2 is out on Steam today - here's how existing owners can get a Steam keyAug 31, 2020 - Wargamer.comBattlefront's leading modern-era wargame Combat Mission: Shock Force 2 has been released on Steam (despite telling us it'd be released tomorrow - thanks guys). For those who enjoy hardcore, WEGO experiences that try to simulate authentic combat conditions, Shock Force 2 is one of the leading examples, challenged only by the likes of Graviteam (although they don't often touch on modern conflicts). Anyone who's been supporting Battlefront a long time however will of course be aware that launching on Steam has been something people have been asking for for a long time. Not everyone, but there's a solid core of pro-steam users who've finally had their prayers answered. But if you've been supporting Battlefront all this time, what options are available to you now? Do you need to buy Combat Mission: Shock Force 2 all over again? Thankfully, the answer is a confident 'No'. Combat Mission: Shock Force 2 was brought to Steam by a company we all know and love (to hate) - Matrix Games/Slitherine. They have a lot of experience not only publishing niche wargames on Steam, but also maintaining separate versions of their games. There are plenty of hardcore games from their catalogue that still aren't on Steam, and more games that get a Steam release after they've been available for a while (like Armored Brigade). Combat Mission Shock Force 2 is set in a hypothetical modern-day (2008) Syrian conflict. The game’s 3D graphics engine takes advantage of Battlefront’s vast experience in 3D wargames, giving an unprecedented level of realism and detail – so much that the game is used in several professional military environments for training and analysis purposes. Players can assign orders to their units, either in real time or with the innovative turn-based WeGo system, as Shock Force 2 focuses on tactical platoon-level action. The game features a single-player campaign, several pre-made scenarios and multiplayer (Hotseat or PBEM). The DLCs add the US Marines, the British Forces and the NATO armies (German, Dutch and Canadian). All players who have the original Battlefront version will receive a Steam key for the base game and all DLCs they bought. All details can be found here. To celebrate the launch on Steam and Matrix Games, Combat Mission Shock Force 2 base game will be discounted at 30% off for a limited time. https://store.steampowered.com/app/1369370/Combat_Mission_Shock_Force_2/The Flare Path: A2ZAug 28, 2020 - Rock, Paper, ShotgunA is for Alphabetised wargame and sim news. (more…) Release delayed - New release date September 1Aug 25, 2020 - Community AnnouncementsWe know many of you were anticipating the release of Combat Mission Shock Force 2. Unfortunately, we have some bad news: we won't be able to release today as the game is still in the Steam review queue. It is entirely dependent on Steam, and there is nothing we can do but wait. To stay on the safe side, we are delaying the release by one week; therefore, we will be releasing Combat Mission Shock Force 2 on Tuesday, September 1. We apologize for the delay. https://store.steampowered.com/app/1369370/Combat_Mission_Shock_Force_2/Combat Mission: Shock Force 2 Steam Release DelayedAug 25, 2020 - Wargamer.comThis is just a quick note to say that the Steam release of Combat Mission: Shock Force 2, which was planned to drop later today, has been delayed. Slitherine/Matrix just sent out a news blast saying that the game is still stuck in the Steam approval queue. All games that want to release on Steam need to wait for final review & approval from Valve before they can launch. The fact that it hasn't happened yet the morning of release is worrying, but something we've heard happen before. This is the only part of the process where Valve has complete control and there's nothing Battlefront nor Slitherine/Matrix can do to hasten the process. In order to play it safe and give everything enough time, Combat Mission: Shock Force 2's Steam release date has been pushed back to September 1st, 2020. Hopefully it'll have cleared the review queue by then. It's entirely possible it'll still clear today, but I doubt Slitherine will move the date forward again to avoid confusion. We'll update this story if we hear anything else. Read the rest of the story... Since the implosion of brick and mortar retailing for PC games, Battlefront has been content to offer the consumer versions of its Combat Mission simulations through its own website, ignoring storefronts like Steam that have generally insisted on a sizeable cut of the profits in exchange for placement on digital shelves. And why not? Battlefront has also had the professional military training side of its business to see to, after all. But thanks to a deal brokered by publisher Slitherine, Combat Mission is going to be on the radar for a whole new audience of gamers. We had the chance to talk with Battlefront co-founder Stephen Grammot, who also is one of the co-designers of Combat Mission, about how this new arrangement came to be, and the particular challenges of making high fidelity simulations for both consumer and military player bases. They've never seemed that bothered, but plenty of their fans have grown weary of their approach to things like DRM and Patching and you'll always see threads pop up every now-and-then asking "why not?". Steam isn't the be-all and end-all of digital publishing, but it certainly has its uses; but from my POV I've never thought this was actually about Steam. As an observer, Battlefront has alwayed seemed like a bit of a home-brew operation. A bunch of passionate grogs making wargames they want to and probably can't be bothered to change - especially because you can't get away with Battlefront's more cavalier attitude towards development as much on proper digital channels. They would make & sell their games the way they wanted until the end of time... ... so imagine my surprise then when I get an email about Combat Mission: Shock Force 2 coming to Steam.
