Circle Empires Rivals: Celebrating Our Favourite RTS' During Steam's RTS Fest!Jan 24, 2025 - Community AnnouncementsHey everyone, We’re ecstatic to be a part of Steam's Real-Time Strategy Fest, along with a wealth of other amazing RTS games! Real-Time Strategy games have been around since the early 1990s and we’re honoured to be listed among, and to have played around with, this diverse genre with the Circle Empires series. With Circle Empires 2 on the horizon, we thought it’d be a fun idea to dive into a few RTS games from the past & present that have been a huge inspiration for the Circle Empires series. Here’s Mikhel Trei, developer at Luminous, on some of his personal favourites: My favourite RTS games are Warcraft 3, Age of Empires 1 & 2, Total Annihilation, and Command & Conquer: Red Alert. To me, Warcraft 3 has the best 4-player Free For All mode in any RTS. What makes it so good for me, is the fact that it is reliant on heroes, who gain power by fighting. This provides a unique incentive to engage in battles during Free For All games, which otherwise reward passive play and result in stale games when players play correctly. Age of Empires 1 and 2 are what I grew up with. I've probably played through AOE1’s Rise of Rome expansion demo campaign a thousand times as a kid, because I didn't have the full version of the game. Age of Empires 2 places you in this incredibly engaging fantasy of being a medieval king and I used to play the 1v7 single-player mode quite a lot. Total Annihilation is one of the first RTS I ever came across. I remember seeing it at a friend's place and being mesmerised. It has a fantastic unit command system, great 3D spacial physics, a wide array of units and so much more. It did require a beefy computer for its time and it's overall a bit less intuitive than other, non-SciFi RTSs (Just because you're in the future and don't have horses and men with sharp sticks that are self-explanatory). But like.. sea planes that can land underwater and flying builders that create cannons that shoot on the other side of map… This game is just great. I feel like for Red Alert, all I need to say is: mass teslacoils and air strikes. Since these are all big titles, I feel like I should mention a few games that, in my opinion, should get more recognition.: Knights and Merchants had a really cool economy system. Fans made a complete rebuild of the game called KamRemake. Beasts and Pumpkins had a cool live economy where people would be born and get old, eat bread, fight each other when they're in bad mood and fight giant bees by throwing rocks over a fence. This unlocks lots of cool stuff that wasn't technically possible before. You now have granular control over terrain and building placements. Units can push each other, leading to group vs group struggles in key areas, which you can manipulate with your defensive layouts, magic units and positioning. Any unit can ride any other unit that is large enough. Want to employ the dragon as a mount for a worker? Can do. Just lots of cool stuff that wasn't possible before. For new players: CE2 is an extremely easy to learn strategy game where you conquer, develop and defend small kingdoms in deeply varying circumstances. Fight detailed, tragic battles, defend or sacrifice regions and develop the smartest route to domination in every situation. Start out easy and improve until you master the Impossible. So, Circle Empires 2 takes everything you love about the original game and sequel and adds even more strategic depth, variety, and fun. We've introduced new units, weapons, and terrain effects to keep you coming round for more. There’s also a brand-new mounting system that lets any unit ride another larger one. We have switched the service provider from Improbable to Amazon Gamelift. A lot has changed under the hood. The update should now be live and up and running. This change has taken place because Improbable shut down its game server branch. There are small changes to starting a new multiplayer game. When creating a new lobby, players now choose between co-op and pvp mode, set the name for the lobby, and can optionally set a password. These settings can not be updated once the lobby has been created due to limitations on Gamelift. First, select who you want to spawn the unit for. You can choose between monsters, hostile empires, barbarians, bandits, and of course yourself. A lot. https://i.imgur.com/OFo6f9y.gif You can now answer the age-old question of: "can a level 3 swordsman win against 300 poison zombies?" The answer, as you might expect, is no. Multiplayer? Yes, the spawning menu is also available in multiplayer! Play with your friends and spawn massive armies to defeat. In multiplayer, the host can enable cheats in the same way as in single player, after which both players will have access to them. We're back with a small update addressing some common requests from the community. Leveling up a unit to bonus level 99 was a bit much, so we've changed that, among other things! Without further ado, here are the changes in today's patch: Fixed a memory leak that affects very long games The achievements about bonus levels now require 3 and 10 bonus levels (down from 10 and 99) Losing a PVP match vs higher rated player now loses less points Winning a free-for-all match vs humans (you alone vs many opponents) now gives more points than winning 1v1 match Settings: allow switching "window" size when in full screen Settings: fixed issue where incorrect window size was displayed in settings Fixed the issue on some devices where the game did not cover the full screen in full screen mode. You may have seen our earlier announcement this week about QoL changes, but we've made another one that will make your micro-managing life easier. We're smashing those together in this update, so don't be alarmed when you see the same changes! Improved unit selection & click detection First off, you now have an overview of all the units you have selected when you drag a box around multiple types. Clicking on one of those buttons will only select that unit type! A small update today, focusing on quality of life improvements. First and foremost, improved click detection! You ever click on a melee unit, only for the squishy archer behind it to get selected? That time of year when all sorts of games have special Halloween updates. Turns out that's pretty difficult to do when your game already has pumpkins that spring to life, spooky skeletons, creepy crawlies, and all the other Halloween classics! But, we pulled through! Introducing: Pink Goo Pink Goo might look like delicious strawberry frosting, but it can be deadly to traverse with the wrong units. It slows units that walk across it, more so than water biomes. Just look at those poor zombies shamble! {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/35983334/8f25454142bf23f48a7f57986a4ed5bf4bf48cf5.gif Now, this isn't just a temporary addition, Pink Goo is here to stay! If you want as much goo as possible, set your map to lakes & swamps. Other changes & fixes Reduced fishing bonus from the first fishing upgrade from +50% to +30% Zombies don't decay when harvesting resources. The timer is reset when they drop off resources at the storehouse. Fixed a rare crash in Imperial Conflict mode where AI got invalid Leader and was unable to continue the map initialization. We're excited to announce that this update brings a brand-spanking new free game mode: Defend the Castle. In Defend the Castle, you (and your allies) will have to defend your circles against waves of enemies that grow increasingly powerful. Defeat the invaders quickly, because the clock keeps ticking, with new waves spawning every 2 minutes or so. Do your best not to be overrun! You win the game if you manage to survive a harrowing 20 waves of bloodthirsty barbarians, greedy goblins, wily wizards, dangerous dragons, and more! {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/35983334/fb882fc2fdf5a5c5b37273ef4b27035b1ffe71fc.gif If you're also on the Iceberg Interactive Discord server, you may have already tried Defend the Castle in its beta stages. If so, here's how the game mode has changed since then: The first wave is easier and spawns earlier The four corner circles are harder to conquer Wave strength scaling has changed -- the final wave should now be twice as difficult as before! Thanks to all who provided feedback during the testing period! Balance changes Witch level 2 (Elder witch) strength rating increased from 700 to 900 Master Chiller strength rating reduced Frog witch level 2 strength rating increased Wizard strength rating reduced at levels 2-4. Level 2 damage increased from 20 to 30. Level 3 damage increased from 40 to 60. Evil mermaid price increased from 90 food to 100 food Mermaid archer range reduced from 10 to 8. Price increased from 50 wood, 200 food > 50 wood, 210 food Mermaid spear-man range reduced from 8 to 7. Mermaid spear-man attack cooldown increased from 0.9s to 1.2s Mermaid spear-man hp reduced from 300 to 250 at level 1. From 750 to 550 at level 2. Mermaid spear-man poison damage at level 1 reduced from 10 x 30 s => 6 x 30 s. At level 2 from 15 x 30s => 10 x 30 s. Fishery: fish spawning cooldown increased from 25s to 30s at level 1 When fish consume food (e.g. pumpkins) they now need 50% more food to create +1 new fish (they work similar to bears multiplying). (FoN DLC) Bear price increased from 365 food, 10 gold => 400 food, 15 gold. Bears multiply about 50% slower in nature now.
