History was built from the joint unity of human efforts and multiplayer is a natural progression of evolution in our game. We are building a system where players can both enjoy ...Dev Diary for Mar-Apr: Future of MultiplayerApr 8, 2024 - Community AnnouncementsHi Universe Architects, In March, the Cells team spent a week at the Game Developers Conference (GDC) in San Francisco. There was a lot of prep work involved as we wrapped up our schedules to prepare and showcase our game with other fellow game developers. Things were quiet in the forefront, but we’ve been busy in the backend working on some new upcoming content and features, including Beyond episodes. We hope players enjoyed our April Fool's post. Big changes to the game are also on the way. For this dev diary, we wanted to talk about the future of multiplayer. In our last livestream and in past patch notes, we’ve alluded to the challenges of developing multiplayer features. It was our first time as a development team to tackle multiplayer and we’ve learned a lot along the way. To recap, we developed a new competitive leaderboard system for the Explore Events called the Research Race. This feature grouped players based on their progress and time started in the Explore Events up to a total of fifteen players per group. Each group would compete for first, second and third place and win prizes respectively. While the Research Race provided a fun and new way to play our events, it did leave casual players, who were less interested in the competitive aspect, little chance to win prizes. We also had cheaters who would consistently win the top prizes each round which created an unfair advantage. We did a number of changes over time from fixing technical issues to making the gameplay more fair, such as: Adjusting the badge boost bonus to a gradual uplift after gaining 200%. Players who were known to be cheating were shadow banned from the leaderboard (however, they will appear on the leaderboard if players have marked them as friends in the game). Time flux purchases were capped in Explore Events. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/34010837/9b928a4a7bde2203643c669275b43fdbf5acca48.png In the end, we feel that the Research Race was not the right fit for our game or the right environment we want to create. And so, multiplayer is evolving. It Ain’t Over Till It’s Over We will be phasing out the Research Race. We are currently developing a new segmented leaderboard where 1000 players will be playing in a group together. Players will be sorted in segmented groups based on the time they start and their relative progress in achieving objectives. There will be different tiers of achievements that will allow more players to win prizes. For example: Of a 1000 players in a segment, players would compete and could be placed in the top ten percent, top five, top one, etc. The higher the tier, the bigger the prize. The goal for this change is to be able to reward players who do not have as much time or who do not enjoy the competitive aspect in the game. Below is an example of a prototype. It is still a work in progress, the rewards and tiers are not a reflection of the final iteration. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/34010837/b5984cfaf674984d4418ee3c004a83e189c9260e.png Part of this new segment...Nurture Your Inner Artist with Explore: Visual Art — "The Power of Images"Mar 25, 2024 - Community AnnouncementsHello Universe Architects! Their artist, Stephanie, has done a stellar job in creating the nebulas in our game, and we’re excited to show more of our combined efforts together. For those who are part of our beta testing program, players were able to gain a sneak peek on various new content we will be releasing soon. We thank all our beta players for their invaluable feedback. Similar to the Visual ...Patch 24.21: Sound effect update, UI improvements, and moreMar 14, 2024 - Community AnnouncementsHello Universe Architects, A few preparations and changes have been made to the simulation. An Audio Refresh We’re all familiar with the sound you hear when you purchase a node. It’s been the same sound effect since Cells first launched, so we decided it was time to refresh the simulation a bit. We’d love to hear your thoughts on these new sound effects: First-time node and generator purchases. Generator selects and upgrades. Earning Logits and unlocking Augmentations. Completing Explore Events missions. Other miscellaneous sound effects. Improvement to the Augmentation Store View For the past couple of months we have been updating the Augmentation Store. For this update we have done another visual update. We have also made it so that when you purchase an artifact in the augmentation store you will get a popup, allowing you to view your purchase in the tree view. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/34010837/5f8291f1e0bdc5bebe8facafcee99e0de28f684a.png Additional Adjustments for Event Badges About a month ago we added diminishing returns on badge boosts after gaining 200%. We received some concerns about this change from players and are addressing those with this update. We have adjusted the badge boost diminishing return to be more gradual after the 200% cut-off. Players should see a higher boost for each badge gained as seen below. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/34010837/9b928a4a7bde2203643c669275b43fdbf5acca48.png Explore: Visual Art — The Power of Images The new Visual Art Explore Event is almost here! We’re excited to share what’s in store for this extra special event. Until then, stay cellular! - The Cells TeamAbout New Badge Tuning ChangesFeb 27, 2024 - Community AnnouncementsHello Universe Architects, Recently there was a significant change to the boost power of Explore Event badges. We hear all feedback and concerns from players regarding this re-tune, so we're here to provide some extra information about what changes were made, why we made them and how this will affect the game moving forward. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/34010837/d213e8a46e6957b5992b75c109449f2793155cf6.png What did we change? Once a player reaches 200% badge boost in an event, there's now a dimensioning boost that comes with each earned badge. Dimensioning in this case means that after reaching 200% in an event, a badge earning a 10% boost now earns 8%. Then the eventual power of the badges will reduce to less than 1% per badge over time. Previously players had a total of 300%+ badge boost, which have caused balancing issues as the developers continue adding significant gameplay changes to Explore Events. This brings us to: Why did we make this change? There are a couple major reasons why we went ahead with this change. We've been continuously working towards making the Research Race more fair for all players. We've received feedback that it isn't fun for new players to play against late game players, in addition to cheaters. This feedback has been in the forefront of our minds when we make important tuning changes that affect the Research Race. Speaking of cheaters— this recent change has, for the most part, mitigated cheaters in the Research Race. Explore Events are designed to take around 40 hours to complete, while cheaters are able to beat an event in less than 15 minutes due to their unusually high badge boosts. In addition to shadow banning and time flux caps, we were hopeful that this change would improve the quality of Research Race against cheaters. There has already been a significant drop in cheater complaints following the change. We are always open to player feedback and we want to continue hearing about your individual player experiences. Explore Events have changed a lot from what they originally were. What's now a core feature in the game was once a bare prototype that left us unsure about its potential success. They were also originally designed without any multiplayer mechanics in mind. As we continue to tune Explore Events with a focus on multiplayer mechanics, it means that other parts of the events will need to be re-tuned in order to accommodate for future changes. What are our plans? We are currently looking into reducing the dimensioning curve a little for higher level gameplay among other solutions. We are also exploring new multiplayer modes that would be more collaborative and less competitive. For more information about this, watch our latest livestream that’s now available on YouTube. There we first introduce the team’s thoughts behind the dimensioning badge boosts. We’ll also be sharing even more information about our plans for multiplayer mechanics in our upcoming dev diary. Thank you for taking the time to read about our in...Travel Through Nebulae in Beyond E23: Supernova AftermathFeb 16, 2024 - Community AnnouncementsHello Universe Architects, It’s been quite the galactic journey. After an end-of-year break, the Cells team is back at work. Let's recap on what's been released since our last update, and take a peek at what we've been working on now. As always, we rely on your feedback, particularly the feedback of our players who test all the new features of the game before public release. Our beta players play test never before seen content and provide feedback on their experience. As a result, many of the features added in the game are requests from our testers. The Leg Bone Connected to the Knee Bone… We released the first recurring event of the New Year, Explore: Human Body — Anatomy of Life. Based on a topic long requested by players, the event was the first to feature a content warning due to sensitive medical material and trypophobia. While the event was well received overall, we wanted to give players the opportunity to skip the event if they did not feel comfortable. The Human Body event is also the first to strategically feature two interdependent currencies: Deoxygenated and Oxygenated blood, which work in tandem to unlock nodes and generators. Generators purchased with one type of currency can produce the other type, which gave rise to new strategies in this event. In order to ensure scientific accuracy, we consulted a medical doctor for this event. They made certain that the smallest details were correct from the particulars of the hypodermis to the complex functioning of the lobes in the brain. The pineal gland maintains your circadian rhythm - your sleep cycle - by responding to cues from the presence and absence of blue light in the day and night. Did you know that the blue-ish, green, purple vein popping out of your hand carries deoxygenated blood? For many, this was new information to learn from this event. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/34010837/ee2b2fd37a475406a6e37522e3a1495960fa40cb.png The launch of Explore: Human Body — Anatomy of Life was accompanied by a Discord 'Let's Play' event. A big thank you to everyone who showed. Attendees played along with the team and received Darwinium in the chat. If you enjoyed this event, we always welcome feedback to help us improve in the future. Nebulae in 3D With Beyond E22: When Stars Die, the simulation sailed into strange new waters. Modeling massive nebulae in 3D at 360 degrees was a large and complex undertaking. Stephanie Davila, a consultant who worked on this project, is a talented artist from Pariah Interactive game studio - our neighbors in Brooklyn. Using references from deep space images and drawing on simulations designed by astronomers, she created these amazing nebula models. Combined with advanced real-time mathematical data, the result is a feat no game has accurately depicted: distant nebulae in all their three-dimensional glory. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/34010837/3d505357ab816a0a2bccf3994df9959887841c98.png We chose a sampling of the most interesting, diverse nebulae for this episode. Whether or not you’re following us on Discord, Instagram, Reddit, or elsewhere, tap on the news icon to read about the latest in-game updates, information on events, community spotlights, development diaries, and much more! {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/34010837/b58541dfff30980c013a360c7ca8489549608166.png Clean Endings for Explore Events We've changed how Explore Events conclude in the game. Previously, when an event (ex:- James Webb) was over, players could continue playing the event for as long as they did not exit the simulation. However, this was confusing for players and created issues for the research race. Starting with build v22.93, Explore Events will close at the time scheduled in the game. When the time is up, it’s up! Make sure to claim all your mission prizes before the deadline. They will no longer be available after the event ends. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/34010837/5c5644c7b5766898fee5ae3c529b88ad3e5e3174.png This patch might be small but we have big things coming soon on the horizon. Players should keep an eye out in our socials and the in-game news feature. See you in the news feed. Stay cellular! - The Cells Team Witness a Star’s Final Bow in Beyond E22: When Stars DieDec 18, 2023 - Community AnnouncementsHello Universe Architects, With Semblance’s lead, we’ve traversed through the stars and distant exoplanets of the Milky Way. While we take a brief moment to circle back, we’ll be learning about a celestial phenomenon that astonishes and amazes. We’ve seen stars at their births, then we’ve followed them as they aged. But what happens when a star has met the end of its lifespan? {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/34010837/061ad947c86e62aaf5b6a6db60c1c0e26b070947.png Come with us to the stellar graveyard. It’s time to see how dying stars form some of the most beautiful nebulae. Nebulae Like Never Before Ever see the good side of a nebula? Neither have we, until now. For several months our team has researched and speculated the distinct shapes of certain nebulae in 360 degrees— not just how they appear from the single direction of Earth. And now those nebulae are available for player research in the Beyond garden! Examine three 3D nebulae in the Beyond Garden: the Helix, Cat’s Eye, and Hourglass Nebulae. Enjoy newly visualized nebulae with unique textures and effects. Speculate along with us! How do you think these nebulae would appear in a 3D space? {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/34010837/0b06fc8763852b5c572453b32dfb95e2c29f7495.png Into the Eye of the Nebula Every nebula is unique, but just how unique can they be? Some nebulae form impossible shapes while others produce less gas than 1% of our Sun’s mass. Follow Semblance’s deep space journey on the Beyond tree and unlock the three new nebulae as their own generators. Boost your Beyond simulation with eight new Enhancement Trait Cards, and learn more about the formation of nebulae along the way. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/34010837/5387984d4ad1d2ffaf68cfc9f747bc3b6098f274.jpg Astronomical Achievements There’s always something new to discover in the simulation. This time around, you’ll be able to discover new Beyond achievements, constellations and more. Unlock six new achievements celebrating the unique features of nebulae. Unfold two new constellations with their own achievements: Perseus and Ara. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/34010837/7b00e2e3c7d694f5cdf8e7d59f0a2aa540273e27.png Additional Features: Performance improvements have been made in all simulations. The most substantial boosts have been made for the Beyond and the Mesozoic Valley tree. Expanded default and custom notation past E200 - now production past E100 will no longer default to scientific notation (you can finally get one quinquinquagintillion entropy). The overall game has a smaller download size. Animations in the Civilization Garden for the Neolithic Age have been improved. Promo Bundles are now always available in the Boost Menu and Darwinium Store. They don’t disappear once you’ve bought one. Fixed: Quitting/crashing out of ads loses the whole boost streak. With this fixed, you should keep the boost from any ad watched even if a later ad crashes the game or if you quit. Beyond E22: When Stars Die is available to play now on Steam and will be available to all Android and iOS...Finding Another Earth in Beyond E21: Echoes of EarthNov 29, 2023 - Community AnnouncementsHello Universe Architects, We found some unforgettable exoplanets in the last Beyond episode, though none of them were suitable to support organic life. When engaged, a Time Flux charge will be used. Charges only replenish after 15 minutes have passed. If all charges are used, a player can not Time Flux until a charge has replenished. Beyond E21: Echoes of Earth is now available to unlock and play on Steam, and will be available to all Android and iOS players by December 3, 2023. Join us as we continue our journey into the great Beyond! Where will Semblance lead us once we’ve learned more about the possibilities of hospitable exoplanets? Only time will tell. While we wait for this exoplanet to introduce itself, please enjoy Beyond E21: Echoes of Earth. The discoveries made by NASA and other major astronomical org...Dev Diary for Nov – Fixing bugs and Looking aheadNov 27, 2023 - Community AnnouncementsWelcome back, Universe Architects! Thanksgiving has passed with a lot of updates and excitement. We released the latest installment of the Civilization: Neolithic Age update and our third limited-time event of the year, Explore: Music – Good Vibrations. We hope everyone has been enjoying the new content. A big thank you to our beta and Steam players for keeping a watchful eye out for some bugs last month. Thanks to their vigilance, we were able to apply hotfixes early. For context, in September, we saw an uptick in crashes. To resolve those issues, we updated our Unity from version 2020.3.33f1 to version 2022.3.10f1. And it worked – the game’s crash rate on Android went down from 3-4% to less than 1%. Along with the Unity upgrade, we also updated our APIs and Ads SDKs. Unfortunately, this resulted in the Cell to Singularity banner blocking the exit button for some players, meaning they were unable to exit ads. We also saw some reports of players losing their Darwinium inventory. Thankfully, we were able to resolve both issues quickly, and we strongly advise all our players to update to the latest versions to address most issues they might encounter. The Marketing/ Community team has also been reaching out to players from our various socials to provide help where needed. A thank you again to the community for supporting each other. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/34010837/c5c17cf2320db52476fab8edd9e84f1fc3927712.png Quick tip: Another solution to restore any lost inventory is to use the backup save option. The game autosaves progress in different intervals in the background. Players should take advantage of this feature as their first line of defense in protecting their save files. If you have already updated to the latest version and still encounter problems, please do the following: Email [email protected] with your platform/device and the latest build version number. If multiple devices are used, mention the build version numbers installed. Give a detailed summary of the issue. More quality of life improvements are in the works for next year. The goal is to avoid disruptions while continuing to add lots of new content to the game: We are working on an anti-cheat system for Research Race events. The challenge has been for the system to recognize and separate out players who do not use legitimate methods to finish the race. We are also testing several new performance optimizations. This should help the game to run smoothly, even on older phones. An in-game news feature system is also planned, to share the latest news and updates in the game. This feature is especially important for instances where players are required to update their game versions in order to enjoy the latest content. We are excited to hear players’ feedback for the Explore: Music – Good Vibrations garden. We are currently experimenting with various formats and approaches to in-game events, and are curious about what players like, so make sure to share your thoughts with us. Stay tuned ...Listen closely in Explore: Music — “Good Vibrations”Nov 20, 2023 - Community AnnouncementsWelcome Universe Architects! The Cells Team In search of a new home in Beyond Episode 20: Strange WorldsOct 25, 2023 - Community AnnouncementsSalutations, Universe Architects! Coming to you live from the outer reaches of our galactic neighborhood, we are ready to present the next chapter of the Beyond - Episode 20: Strange Worlds. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/34010837/72f08e17eea75f73a5fa1bb3e51ab9d9bc9044ea.png Semblance is looking for a new home that could harbor life. But it seems that Earth is extremely rare… will she find another? As we start the search, get ready to encounter very alien exoplanets— some terribly hot, others torn apart by gravity, all unfit to harbor the beginnings of life. What strange worlds will she find? Moving farther away from the Sun Players went on a widespread journey as we charted the lives of stars in the H-R Diagram through Episodes 18 and 19. With the full range of stars understood, players will be moving farther out into the milky way in search of distant systems with planets. Traverse and discover five new generators of exciting exoplanets—Fomalhaut’s Ring, WASP-12b, Awohali, Kepler-70b and Janssen. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/34010837/eef872bcb7a0d245f9cc5e51825c10604119f41d.png You’ll notice some missions call back to earlier generators as we delve deeper into the story of finding another Earth-look-alike. Help Semblance learn about other star systems by upgrading some of the old generators The Brink of Doom is Coming Put a ring on it with twelve new "Series II" trait cards including ‘Diamond Crust.’ Live on the edge with ‘Brink of Doom’ as we follow Semblance in her search for a new home. These strange worlds have fascinating traits, even if they wouldn’t be a great place to move into! {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/34010837/3500c0cd646e8a3c1571b232c95586ac6970a113.png The 3D Garden is Expanding Space is expansive and so is our 3D garden! As we go beyond the stars, we’ve made more overall improvements to the garden. Distance units now change when zooming in/out in the Beyond garden. Improved models, textures and new particle effects were required for Episode 20’s exoplanet generators both on the tree and in the garden. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/34010837/00d2e58c3f20e0237b491c5bffdbdae01babd517.png More to Enjoy Of course, there’s more to uncover: Two new constellations join the night sky including a familiar companion - Canis Major and Ursa Minor. A cluster of ten new achievements have also made its way into the Beyond simulation. Fixed by popular demand: Alpha Centauri now appears correctly in the garden with all three of its suns present in one instance and in the correct distance. Lowered the taps required to unlock the Beyond from 400 to 200. Visual fix: Sedna doesn’t get enough sunlight on iOS. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/34010837/99a576a9f8fe78efe59330755833fcb78354b3b8.png Fun fact: Did you know? The production time and quantity for generators roughly corresponds to the mass of the celestial body. Van Maanen’s Star is small, and has a quick production speed - but it doesn’t produce as much stardust as the much slower, larger Arcturus. Overall it produces more per second - but the timer...Dev Diary for Oct— Spill the tea, what’s happening?Oct 17, 2023 - Community AnnouncementsHi Universe Architects! It’s been some time since we last made a dev diary. It’s the busiest we’ve been for a while, and we hope everyone is enjoying all of the updates we’ve been working hard on. Thank you for your continued feedback for these updates, especially to our beta community for replaying our test builds multiple times. We would not be able to do this without everyone’s enthusiasm and support. Get your tea ready and let’s take the time to recap all the content that’s been out before we take a look into what’s coming up next. Warning: It’s a bit of a long read. Take a sip as we take a step back We released our second limited time event of the year Explore: Tea — A Journey of Serenity. We are still figuring out our process for bringing more events to you at an increased cadence while also gauging topics that would resonate with our players. Although we aspire to incorporate a 3D garden for each Explore Event, the reality is that even a simplified version demands too much time for production. We currently face a dilemma between accommodating player demand and managing our internal team's bandwidth. We aim to deliver enjoyable experiences for our players, but when stacked up against potential delays, we'll need to review the necessity of Explore Event 3D gardens once more moving forward. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/34010837/3e72d94654df5dbcf8c758e80a1bdd548bc643dd.jpg We’ve also received a lot of questions on why we chose tea as a topic. It is very different from what we’ve done in the past, and it was mainly an internal decision based on the team’s love for tea. In January, we created a poll asking our players what topics they would like us to pursue for future events. Out of the many topics that were suggested, tea was the only topic that seemed to gain widespread interest within the team. And so, what was once a conversation starter became a project that led to the creation of a new limited time event! It was led by a two person team with different members floating in as needed during its development. We even surprised players at PlayNYC (learn more: link) as Tea made its debut to the public as a beta feature. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/34010837/2212b7e0045fb5eda214cd6216a7c5d18a618486.jpg If players are still curious about the process and want to learn more, our Discord ‘Let’s Play’ event during Tea’s launch can be viewed here: https://youtu.be/b0WxdtFoVwY We hope players enjoyed Explore: Tea — A Journey of Serenity, and we will be using your feedback to help us improve future events. Civilization wasn’t built in a day The Dawn of Civilization is in full swing! With the release of the Stone Age Civilization update, we introduced seven new research nodes and four unique trophy nodes to the Main Simulation tree. Göbekli Tepe, Dog Domestication and Lascaux are three new prizes that appear in the Civilization Garden once unlocked from the Logit Store. Players will need to save up Logits and Darwinium in order to acquire these exclusive new items. We also a...The First Age is Upon Us — Stone AgeOct 12, 2023 - Community AnnouncementsGreetings, Universe Architects! Human history is ready for its re-debut in the simulation. We've collected a lot of your feedback and are looking ahead at long term quality of life improvements. Before we can get there, this update is on the smaller side. Here's what to look out for in this patch: Research Race party size has been decreased to 15 players. Now you see me, now... you still do! Players should now be able to see themselves in their participating Research Race, as well as the correct ranking of participants in the side tab. Ordering of players in the Research Race is now fixed to properly represent progress. Minor UI bug fixes. The Civilization: Stone Age update is available to all players on Steam today and will be available on iOS and Android on 10/16/2023. In other news, Beyond Episode 20 will be making its appearance to the public very soon. It is in the final stages of polish and tuning. We will be moving away from the stars as we begin to chart strange territory. I wonder what Semblance will find… On Friday 10/20 from 1:00 - 2:00 PM EST, we will be holding another livestream as we dive more into Beyond Episode 20 and details regarding the Research Race feature. Stay tuned for a long dev diary coming to you soon. Thank ...20.27 Profile card updated, Research race improvementsOct 5, 2023 - Community AnnouncementsHello Universe Architects!
