Celeste Classic presented a condensed climb up the titular mountain, letting you dash across platforms, hang onto walls, and collect strawberries - in miniature form. As a fun homage, you can find the PICO-8 version inside Celeste proper. And now, as an even funner homage, you can play it on the Playdate. A loveable game on a loveable handheld. The Itch.io Ukraine games bundle was a stellar deal, as for the cost of just $10 people could get their hands on nearly a thousand indie games - including names such as Superhot, Celeste, Wandersong, and Skatebird - with the money entirely going to support charities working in Ukraine. As companies such as EA and Microsoft pull sales in Russia, many are pushing for charitable donations to relief organisations in Ukraine. Aside from suspending sales, Activision Blizzard has promised to match "employee donations 2:1" to support Ukraine. Cold War city builder Workers and Resources: Soviet Republic will get a new DLC pack with all its funds donated to charities, and John Romero's new Doom 2 level has raised over €25K in relief funds. Earlier this month, Itch.io began its Bundle for Ukraine, containing around 889 games and 102 digital game-related items. They could all be unlocked for a minimum $10 contribution, all of which is split between two charities working in Ukraine - the International Medical Corps and Voices of Children. This month, however, YouTuber PrestigeIsKey discovered that trophy when shopping for a replica on eBay - which apparently the developer never received. It wasn't just one of our favourite games of 2018, platformer Celeste is also an excellent example of LGBT+ characters done right. It won the best indie game trophy at the TGAs for 2018 over the likes of Into The Breach, Return of the Obra Dinn, and The Messenger - but the team never received the trophy again afterward. Events took a funny turn this month when YouTuber and streamer PrestigeIsKey went looking for a replica Game Award on eBay and discovered a "Game Awards Game Trophy" for $500. The seller says it "came from one of our liquidation sources" but otherwise didn't know where it came from. Upon unboxing it, PrestigeIsKey discovered it was clearly marked as the award for Celeste. Last year's Mafia: Definitive Edition is, of course, the fancied up version of Illusion Softworks' fondly remembered open-world mobster game from 2002. This new version certainly looks the part, reimagining the 1930s city of Lost Heaven for modern hardware, but Eurogamer's Chris Tapsell didn't feel the the tweaks to its ageing gameplay were quite so successful. "It's a marvelous, period-perfect setting, with fireworks and tension and some nice views of the city," Chris wrote in his rather lukewarm review, "but it immediately evokes the thought of Hitman, or even GTA 5, games next to which Mafia suffers thanks to its lack of pageantry and more traditionally linear, rigid mission design." There's plenty more where that came from, as all-women speedrunning event Flame Fatales is taking place next month. The online event is taking place between 15th-21st August, and will be broadcast on the Games Done Quick Twitch channel. There's a real variety of games listed in the lineup, with everything from Warframe to a 15-card run of Yu-Gi-Oh! Forbidden Memories. There are speedrunning favourites like Celeste and Super Metroid, along with some stranger entries like Disney's 102 Dalmatians: Puppies to the Rescue. Oh, and I'm also glad to see there's also a Fire Emblem: Three Houses run in there. The event is being held in support of Malala Fund - a non-profit organisation founded by Malala and Ziauddin Yousafzai in 2013, which works to "champion every girl's right to 12 years of free, safe, quality education". Flame Fatales raised $80k (£63.8k) for Malala Fund last year, and since 2010, Games Done Quick events have raised over $34m (£24.6m) for charity. Back in the '90s and early '00s, there were countless platformers for console gamers, while the PC had a reputation as a wasteland for this particular genre. Thankfully, this stigma has lessened since the days of Commander Keen, and we owe that in large part to the explosion of indies that have flooded onto digital platforms over the past decade, meaning our fair platform is now bursting at the seams with solid platform games. The best platform games have garnered a reputation as requiring mechanical mastery and sublime timing to get into, but developers continue to push the genre forward by introducing gameplay elements from the best Metroidvania games. Platforming can also be a staple mechanic in some of the best story games, as demonstrated in releases like Celeste and Ori and the Blind Forest. Here are the best platform games you can play on your PC right now. Read the rest of the story... Read more The original Celeste just got a free sequelJan 26, 2021 - PCGamesNBefore Celeste graced our screens back in 2018, we had, uh, Celeste. It was a simplified version of the game created with the Pico-8 engine and released in 2016. It features all the air-dashing, strawberry gathering, and demand for perfect platforming you would recognise, but was more dialled back in animation and these days feels like a proof of concept. Naturally, though, having games with the same name is confusing, so the older of the two became known as Celeste Classic - phew. Now, though, to celebrate the third anniversary of Celeste, the team at Extremely OK Games has released a follow-up to Celeste Classic. It's called Celeste 2: Lani's Trek and the team put it together in just three days. As the title gives away, this one is about a new character called Lani and not Madeline. There's no air-dashing, either, as you'll be relying on a grappling hook to get you where you want to go. I haven't got properly stuck into the game yet, but it still retains everything else that made Celeste enjoyable - from the wonderfully uplifting soundtrack to the demand for precise platforming.
