Better sharpen your knives... {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/35958689/b5bba8ed9bdddafb617e8f15f85c9ebf876b89a4.jpg Have you tried competitive cooking?Jun 10, 2020 - Community AnnouncementsMost of you have probably noticed the Versus mode option in the main menu, but have you tried it out? You might be surprised! Competitive mode? The goal of competitive mode is the same as the campaign - cook the right dishes to feed your Hoochooboo. The challenge comes from the other team who are trying to feed their Hoochooboo faster... and the fact that tourists are a shared resource! {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/35958689/ebaed6e21219d303c0205f87026f9b23575fc2de.png As you can see in the image above, the tourists appear in a central area accessible to both teams. This can lead to some manic melees as you end up fighting tourists and the other team at the same time! Or just run in after the other team has been fighting and swipe their hard earned meat. We're talking about 'teams' here, but you can definitely play competitive mode in 1v1! The cooking areas are protected - mostly - so the other team can't just run in and spoil your meals, but almost everywhere else is fair game. The goal is simple, but the best way to win is more complex. Focus too much on blocking the other team and you'll not feed your own Hoochooboo enough, but it's not wise to just let them get on with it either. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/35958689/2f6f3fd43d6f985a759762b8fe8ef6d2c4c13d6b.jpg This screenshot by player Katastrophy suggests that feeding your god is a better way to win than dying ;) If you have played Versus mode, let us know what you thought on the Steam Hub! Or share your most fiendish strategies for fouling up the other team...Cute art, cute game... cannibalism?May 28, 2020 - Community AnnouncementsIn many ways, making a game is sort of like cooking. You take elements of gameplay, theme, and art, and try to mix them together to create a tasty end result. But you can't just throw anything together! Some ingredients naturally go well with each other, while others don't combo nicely. Still others might seem like they wouldn't fit, but actually taste amazing. And don't even start on the controversial foods (pineapple on pizza anyone?). For many people, the combination of our cute art style with the theme of cannibalism might seem odd. Looking at the whole dish though, you see how it works. The lighthearted art style fits with the fast paced arcade gameplay we wanted, the bright tropical setting, and the humor of the game too. But then, why pick cannibalism as a theme anyway? {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/35958689/2d2845a839af1adba6cd15464360cbbce69862f5.png In short, the cannibalism aspect offers the chance to add a bit of variety to the traditional cooking game. The fact that you have to hunt tourists makes for a clear new addition to the gameplay feedback loop along with combat, but it’s also about many small things that it allows us to do in terms of locations, story, and so on. Plus, the idea of cannibals running a kitchen also just seems funny. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/35958689/7b1d370232aaf0b4dc87811df25544c611b4f169.png The cartoon style allows us to have combat and cooking bits of people without it getting disgusting or shocking. We chose an evil god to be the one you had to feed rather than having actual human 'customers' for similar reasons. Cartoon violence has a long history, and we draw from that with the exaggerated way tourists literally turn into body parts for cooking. You can share your thoughts on the art style (and more!) on the forums. It'd be great to hear from you all! Update: movement system and controls improved!May 23, 2020 - Community AnnouncementsWe’re over the moon to see you all play our game!!! Test your cooking talents through locations ranging from jungles and temples to beaches and volcanoes as you try to figure out a way to defeat the cannibal god Hoochooboo once and for all! Team Rocket VultureEvolution of DesignMay 19, 2020 - Community AnnouncementsGames often change in the course of development, sometimes radically. We're releasing Cannibal Cuisine tomorrow (!) and the game has come a long way. While our core concept for Cannibal Cuisine hasn't shifted from when the team first came up with the idea, some of the individual parts have. For instance, initially an idea was floated to structure the levels differently. We would have had an area where you had to lure and sneakily kill tourists, the kitchen area and a delivery area. However, this became too complex and too much to handle. However, there are still the seeds of a few good ideas here, and maybe we can bring some of that back as bonus levels. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/35958689/1ed93b4c8ca0e0eef79f012beb357b7652e3d481.png Some of the styles for the player characters were adjusted too. That's part of the reason you have concept art of course! You can see in the image below, the machete and mask from image 3 made it into the game as one of the cosmetic hats and weapons, but your chefs don't wear aprons, and the rather creepy hood from the left image didn't make it in either. It's cool artwork, but ultimately didn't fit the overall atmosphere we were aiming for. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/35958689/44f9bbc49924d482559f4eadc15bf1ce70a8e0e6.png Another element that got some reworking was multiplayer! Networked multiplayer can be taken for granted with modern videogames, but it does take some effort to get it working well! Our programmer Niels aka Jonesah says: "The networked multiplayer is something that I personally am very proud of. It was a lot of hard work and required massive rebuilding and tweaking but I’m very proud of the result." Finally, there are the ideas and inspirations which didn't make it into the game because of time constraints. We have lots of things that we'd still love to do if we get a chance. More features, more content, more everything. No promises mind you! We'd also like to say thanks to everyone who has been playing the open beta and who took the time to comment on the game, whether it's here on Steam, on Reddit, on Discord, or wherever! The open beta will be closing soon ahead of the full release tomorrow. We hope you're as excited as we are! We love hearing from players and just laughing and having fun with the people who enjoy our game. So please share your thoughts and ideas on the forums, or come chat with us on Discord! The InspirationMay 11, 2020 - Community AnnouncementsWhat inspires a game? Before we started on this project (as you might have guessed) we were big fans of cooking games such as Overcooked. Collecting ingredients, the cooking, the arcadey platformer-esque movement, and of course the way that all comes together to create hilarious chaos. It's all stuff we really loved in these games. So this sparked the idea to make our own cooking game, preferably in the cute cartoon style that we're so fond of, with extra action gameplay in the form of cooking and a touch of platforming. But there were many competitors already on the market, so we knew we'd have to stand out in some way. That led to us coming up with a weird idea: why not a make cooking game with man-flesh? {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/35958689/ef1ca86e46353fbd546b953c8b80f4aacfced37e.jpg Once we got started, the concept came together in record time! We knew we wanted it to be an arcade-like experience where speed and agility were of paramount importance. We quickly settled on the idea of Cannibals on an island looking for ingredients in order to cook a meal for their hungry god! But these ingredients wouldn't sit still - they'd run around and even put up a fight! That was the origin of the tourists. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/35958689/ebe664e0c0cf1248ea4154845798686fb62ececd.png With this concept fleshed out, and the funding arranged via VAF (Flemish Game Fund), we set out on our very own culinary adventure! Got more questions about Cannibal Cuisine? You'll be able to ask them two days after release, on Friday May 22nd 17:00 CEST at r/IAmA! Now we're drawing closer to our release date on May 20th, and you can try the game already by downloading the open beta - just use the demo link on the Steam store page. The team kindly took a few moments out of their busy schedules to answer a few questions about themselves and the development of Cannibal Cuisine. Expect some interesting Q&A, development trivia, and cool concept art. As a teaser, here's developer Niels -aka Jonesah- talks about his favorite and most inspirational games: Jonesah: One of the games that triggers me most has always been Molyneux’s Black & White. Something about the ability to shape a world is very inspiring. Other than that I’m a sucker for immersive experiences. A truly fleshed out world with believable characters draws me in and makes me dream. The later Wing Commander games or the Mass Effect trilogy are good examples of this. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/35958689/d2ec1a5e2574e6807c2df101e47441fde788a120.jpg Release is drawing closer, so watch this space for more news and updates!Cannibal Cuisine set for Q1 2020!Dec 12, 2019 - Community AnnouncementsThe jungle is in an uproar for this action packed cooking game, as the Gods are hungry... for you! Though as all good cannibal cooks know, serving is better than being served. Luckily the ingredients these man-munching gods demand are readily available in the jungle, such as unwary selfie shooting tourists! Developing a taste for cooking by games such as Overcooked, inspired us to create our own unique cuisine, a cannibalistic one. A spicy homage to Overcooked can be seen in the trailer to show their gratitude. Check out the meaty trailer: https://youtu.be/DVhulrOyzlI Ingredients revealed Free range organic food… mostly The recipes for success are varied; find delicious fruits and vegetables, and combine them with freshly chopped and cooked tourists for a truly divine delicacy fit for the God Hoochooboo. Of course the tourists might not offer themselves up freely, the heathens, so you’ll need to master your arcade reflexes, voodoo magic and fire breathing, useful for baking as well, to persuade them without getting KO’d! Claim your Michelin stars with 1 to 4 players Ready, steady, cook your way through a full campaign alone or with up to 4 chefs or challenge each other to cooking battles in PvP. With so many chefs in the kitchen, chaos is sure to follow. Outsmart rival cannibals while chasing tourists or work together as a crew to serve up the most epic of mealtimes to your god. Sharpen your knives for the next year release, wishlist the game now! Bon appetit, Rocket Vulture {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/35958689/972146500040f1d67c1e2d7dd694dee5aa02c597.gif
