To the surprise of literally no one, Borderlands bombs at the box office its opening weekend with... yeesh, $16 million on a $115 million budgetAug 12, 2024 - VG247Uh oh, the Borderlands movie is off to an incredibly rough start, as the box office figures point all sign towards a flop. I think it's pretty safe to say that Borderlands is a pretty popular series, right? Do we all agree there? It has to be, otherwise the idea of making a movie adaptation would be unthinkable. Said movie has been in the works since 2015, which is always a surefire sign of a hit, and was finally released last week after almost a decade of development. And how was it? Well, I gave it a singular star in my review, because I simply couldn't find anything to like about it. And it seems that that sentiment is pretty much universal, with the film sitting at a Metacritic critic score of 27/100, and a user score of 2.8 out of 10. So it shouldn't be any surprise to hear that, as reported by Variety, the film has opened with a painfully low $16.5 million on a $115 million budget. Domestically it took home $8.8 million, with $7.7 million coming from international sales, painting a picture that quite clearly says "yeah, we're good thanks." Variety also notes that just under 60% of production costs for the film were covered by international presales, according to sources anyway, but it's still a result that is far behind expectations. I think it's pretty safe to say we won't be getting a sequel, at least not any time soon - the games will probably have to redeem the series' image a bit. The looter shooter RPGs are filled with over-the-top guns, eccentric characters, and idiosyncratic writing to the point that many people turn away. I get it. Some of it has aged like milk and the tone isn't for everyone. But if you look past this and play each game for what it is, these are some incredibly dense, rewarding, and combat-heavy shooters that are a joy to play with friends. It helps that you can save over $100 on the whole collection for a limited time, too. Read the rest of the story... Borderlands review: You won't find a better movie to make yourself miserable this yearAug 8, 2024 - VG247It's pretty rare that I walk out of a movie theatre thinking "I truly just wasted 90+ minutes of my life watching that." Normally, I get something out of whatever it was I watched, be it joy or elation at best, perhaps anger or frustration at worst. Those negative feelings at least mean I'm feeling anything at all, they're feelings I can work with and talk about. But when I walked out of the Borderlands movie, I think all I felt was… apathy? A general sense of "what was the point"? Which is probably the most damning thing I could say about any piece of art, but calling the Borderlands movie 'art' is too generous. A film adaptation of Borderlands has been in the works since 2015, and a decade later it's finally here. Who knows what the story was meant to be originally, but what we ended up with was this: Lilith (Cate Blanchett), a bounty talker who doesn't really seem to care about anyone or anything but making her next paycheck, is tasked by the head of a major corporation to rescue his daughter, Tiny Tina (Ariana Greenblatt). Things don't exactly go to plan, and instead she sets off on a journey with Tina, alongside Roland (Kevin Hart), the mercenary that kidnapped Tina, Krieg (Florian Munteanu), a big hulk of a man that doesn't say much, Patricia Tannis (Jamie Lee Curtis), a doctor obsessed with finding a legendary vault, and Claptrap (Jack Black), an annoying robot that makes too many insufferable jokes. For the most part, that's a strong cast. Both Blanchett and Curtis are Oscar-winning actresses. You'd assume that prestige would seep through into the film. But as Borderland's lead, Blanchett's performance feels like one dampened by regret. She has previously explained that she picked up the role to save her from madness during COVID lockdown, but none of that energy can be seen in the finished product. Every single line seems underlined by the fact she's not really sure why she's there, and it kind of rubs off on everyone else too. Read more Cate Blanchett has a very reasonable explanation for why she's in the Borderlands movieJul 4, 2024 - VG247The long-in-the-works Borderlands movie packs an impressive all-star main cast which includes Jack Black and Kevin Hart, but the biggest surprise was Cate Blanchett as the lead. How did that happen? During an interview for Empire, the actress, who's done a bit of everything (including The Lord of the Rings and Marvel) over the years, revealed what really got her into Eli Roth's Borderlands, and the answer is a bit surprising. "The crazy asks are usually the things I gravitate towards; the things I could never conceive of," she explained, potentially justifying why she's taken on lighter roles such as Thor: Ragnarok's Hela or The House with a Clock in its Walls' Florence Zimmerman. She continued: "I think there also may have been a little Covid madness — I was spending a lot of time in the garden, using the chainsaw a little too freely. My husband said, 'This film could save your life.'" Her answer is both funny and intriguing, and one has to wonder how much the Covid lockdown and all the following Hollywood slowdown really affected her. Read more Embracer Group isn't actually evil, just a company "that everyone likes to pick on", Saber founder saysApr 4, 2024 - VG247You know Embracer Group? That company that’s rather gotten a bad rap for selling off studios and laying lots of people off over the past year or so? Well, according to Saber Interactive founder Matthew Karch, we’ve all got the publisher wrong. It’s, er, not evil. That company, regardless of what you think of it, has been in the news a lot over the past few years, often because it’s either been buying stuff up, or more recently, selling stuff off and laying lots of people off as part of a restructuring the CEO Lars Wingefors now says is done. One of the most recent instances of this was Embracer’s selling of Saber to Beacon Interactive, with the current head of the latter now having offered his views on the almighty embrace. Speaking to GamesIndustry.biz, Matthew Karch, a former member of Embracer’s leadership, said that he thinks people have been a bit too hard on the company and Wingefors, who he claims has been “very maligned”. Karch cites the CEO’s wealth and the fact Embracer’s share value has dropped a lot over the past year as the reasons he believes are behind this, adding: “I think it actually dropped more on a relative basis than almost anybody else primarily because seems to be a company these days that everyone likes to pick on.” Read more Borderlands makers Gearbox don’t quite escape Embracer layoffs despite recent sale, as studio confirm fresh cutsApr 3, 2024 - Rock, Paper, ShotgunDespite seemingly escaping the Embrace(r) of death through their sale to Take-Two at the end of last month, Gearbox Entertainment haven’t quite emerged unscathed. The studio has confirmed a number of layoffs shortly after the announcement of the sale, while clarifying that no positions related to the development of games were affected. Read more A new Borderlands is "in active development" but new owners Take-Two don't have much to sayMar 28, 2024 - Rock, Paper, ShotgunAlongside announcing plans to buy Borderlands developers Gearbox from the collapsing wreckage of Embracer Group, Borderlands publishers Take-Two overnight casually mentioned that they are "in active development on next installment in Borderlands series". This isn't a formal announcement as much as a businessblast to hype shareholders, so it didn't have anything specific to say about what Gearbox are up to with their wildly popular and deeply unfunny looter shooter series. It had seemed curious that the much-delayed Borderlands movie was coming out five years after the latest main series game and with no new one in sight. Read more Embracer Group sells Borderlands creator Gearbox to Take Two for 460 millionMar 27, 2024 - VG247Embracer Groups is divesting itself of Gearbox for 460 million dollars, according to an official Embracer Group press release. Gearbox - creator of Borderlands, Risk of Rain, and more video game IPs - will be aquired by Take Two and paid entirely with newly created Take Two shares. When it comes to exactly what Embracer is selling, this includes Gearbox Software, Gearbox Montréal, Gearbox Studio Quebec and well as various IP like Borderlands, Homeworld, Risk of Rain, Brothers in Arms and Duke Nukem. However, Embracer will be keeping its grip on Gearbox Publisher (soon to be renamed following the sale), Cryptic Studios, (Neverwinter Online and Star Trek Online), Lost Boys Interactive and Captured Dimensions. These developers will be folded into the Embracer company proper following the sale. Back in 2021, Embracer group bought Gearbox for $1.3 billion. $363 million was upfront, split 50 / 50 between cash and Embracer shares. There was then rougly $1 billion up for grabs if Gearbox hit several targets within six years, though there is no mention on whether these targets were hit by Gearbox since being acquired. Randy Pitchford will remain CEO of Gearbox as the company jiggles under Take Two's umbrella. Read more Even Jack Black can't believe Rockstar hasn't made a GTA or Red Dead Redemption movie yetMar 26, 2024 - VG247It seems like Jack Black mostly has video game movies on his mind outside of Kung Fu Panda these days, as even he's wondering where a Grand Theft Auto movie is. No matter which video game movie you look at, Black appears to be in it. He's in the upcoming Minecraft movie, which he will be singing in, he was of course Bowser in last year's Super Mario Bros. Movie, and we'll be hearing him as Borderland's Claptrap in this year's adaptation of the beloved shooter series. Black recently spoke to Total Film (via GamesRadar) about his role as Claptrap, where interestingly enough, he also expressed his befuddlement at the lack of a Grand Theft Auto or Red Dead Redemption movie. "I can't believe they haven't already started making a movie of any of the Rockstar Games - Grand Theft Auto, but especially Red Dead Redemption," Black said. "Those things are already like movies, you know? I guess that's the thing. Some video games are already halfway there to telling those kind of stories, and there are some movies that are like video games. Read more Borderlands studio Gearbox reportedly to be sold by owners EmbracerMar 1, 2024 - Rock, Paper, ShotgunIt's looking increasingly likely that Gearbox Entertainment is going to be sold by Embracer. In a town hall with staff earlier this week, CEO and co-founder Randy Pitchford reportedly told staff that a decision had been made regarding the studio's future, with more details to be shared in March. Embracer bought Gearbox for $1.3 billion (around £1.02 billion) in 2021, but it was reported that they were looking to sell last year as part of ongoing layoffs, closures and divestments. Read more The Borderlands movie's first look confirms it has characters from Borderlands in itFeb 20, 2024 - VG247After a long wait, the first look at the live-action adaptation of Borderlands is here and yeah, it sure does look like a film with Borderlands characters in it. If it sounds like I'm being sarcastic, I mostly am, as there People has offered a first look at the upcoming adaptation, it's just not much of one. A couple of images were released, the main one being a shot of the entire cast looking down a hole of some kind. That cast includes Cate Blanchett in the lead role, Lilith, a red-haired Siren fugitive that's returning to her home planet in order to search for the missing daughter of Atlas (who's played by Édgar Ramírez). She's joined by Kevin Hart as former soldier Roland, Ariana Greenblatt as Tiny Tina, Florian Munteanu as Tina's bodyguard Krieg, Jamie Lee Curtis as scientist Tannis, and Bowser himself, Jack Black, as the fairly iconic robot Claptrap. A second image of just Blanchett as Lilith was also shown but again, other than a smokey-eyed glare, I'm not really getting much from these photos right now. At the moment it's just giving an expensive cosplay kind of vibe, but I'm sure seeing them in motion will make it start to feel like it's an actual film. Read more The Borderlands film adaptation gets dated for summer 2024Jul 21, 2023 - Rock, Paper, ShotgunBased on the shooter series of the same name, the Borderlands film now has an official release date: August 9th, 2024. The action-comedy adaptation wrapped principal shooting in 2021, but it’s been somewhat stuck in post-production limbo ever since with several rounds of reshoots pushing out the release further than expected. This comes after reports that co-writer Craig Mazin - best known as the showrunner behind HBO’s The Last Of Us and Chornobyl - removed his name from the project in favour of a pseudonym. More recently, Mazin confirmed to Variety that the pen name reports were false and he’s instead “not a credited writer” on Borderlands at all anymore. Mazin is instead focusing on The Last Of Us’ second season. The Borderlands was mostly directed by Eli Roth, known for his work on the Hostel films and Cabin Fever. Roth was reportedly busy during reshoots, however, so studio Lionsgate enlisted the help of Tim Miller, the director behind Deadpool, to helm the project for a few weeks.
