Epic's next free game is basically Factorio meets OvercookedAug 19, 2021 - PCGamesNIt's Thursday, and you know what that means - another round of free PC games from the Epic Games Store. This week, you can grab Yooka-Laylee and Void Bastards, and as ever, Epic has revealed next week's freebie, too. Next time around, you'll be able to grab Automachef, which brings the factory-building spirit of games like Factorio to the kitchen. You'll be able to grab Automachef from the usual Epic Games Store promotion page on Thursday, August 26 at 8am PDT / 11am EDT / 4pm BST. It'll be there for one full week, at which point it'll be replaced by another freebie. As always, you'll 'purchase' the game at a price of zero dollars, and it'll remain in your library just like any game you might pay money for. The store page describes Automachef as a "a resource management puzzler where you design kitchens, program machinery and watch your genius come to life". You can "take on the campaign levels, traverse your way through the business world in contracts mode, or just go nuts and bolts in the sandbox test mode and play until you get your fill". Today I am going to be sharing some of my top tips so you can be successful entrepreneurs, taking over the world of fast food, just like me. Things can get very tricky under certain conditions, so it’s important to pay attention and make an effort to increase the efficiency of your kitchen in order to deliver food to your beloved customers as quickly as possible. Here are some of the common pitfalls and some thoughts on how to get them sorted out, so machines will continue serving us, humans, in a predictable and non-world-conquering way. Adjusting the time between ingredients in your dispensers can be an easy way to get the ingredient ratios right and avoid the use of expensive order readers. If your recipe, for example, requires two patties but only one bun, make sure that the time between ingredients in the bun dispenser is set to twice the one in the patty dispenser. You can also adjust the timing based on the number of customers that you are expecting. Restaurants with more than one type of customer (like drive-thru and take-out) can get tricky sometimes. In those cases, it might be a good idea to have a constant flow of dishes being stored in a storage unit. Then you can use order readers to control a robotic arm to take the food from the storage unit and redirect it to the proper conveyor belt to be delivered to the correct section of the restaurant. A good way to handle rush hours is to have a small buffer of production in a storage unit. You can even use a counting machine to turn dispensers on or off depending on the number of dishes you have in your storage unit, so you won’t overproduce. If used properly, programmable computers can end up replacing up to four different order readers. They are particularly good if you combine them with repeaters in order to increase the number of effective outputs. Remember you can find the reference guide for computers on our website. Are you experiencing frequent blackouts because you exceed the limit of power consumption? Besides setting machines so they use the power saving mode, you could also use a computer to turn assemblers, grills and other high power usage machines on and off alternately, so they are not all on at the same time. You cannot deliver dishes quick enough because your good old assembler is taking a long time to make them? Consider replacing it with an advanced assembler, which is significantly faster! Now go forth my fellow organic lifeforms and become the automated kitchen entrepreneur you've always dreamed of being!Kitchen Confidential #7 - Mod Creation!Sep 3, 2019 - Community AnnouncementsHey everyone, Welcome to Automachef's 7th Kitchen Confidential! This week the definitely human Robert Person has graced us with their presence! Robert shall be explaining how Mods work and how you can make your own to play and share on the Steam Workshop. Let's get stuck in shall we? Mod Creation Hello fellow humans, welcome to yet another “Kitchen Confidential”. This time we are going to talk about one of the features that sets Automachef apart: the tools that allow players to create their very own recipes, ingredients, dishes and levels and then share them with the rest of the community! In order to see some of the creations you could make using the Automachef Software Development Kit, check out the Steam Workshop, particularly the following mods, which are extremely fun to play: Danish Food (frikadellesandwich, flæskesteg and other traditional Danish foods) Delicious Desserts (ice cream, cakes, pancakes and more) High Steaks (steaks of different types and different degrees of doneness) Getting started with making your own mods is quite easy. We suggest that you check Automachef’s website and download the mod creation guide for more detail, but here are the basics: 1. Download and install Unity 2018.3.7f1. You can get it through the Unity Hub that you can download from Unity’s website for free. 2. Download the Automachef SDK from Automachef’s website. 3. Think about the recipes, ingredients and dishes you want to make. 4.Fire up your favourite 3D modelling software (like Blender) and start making the 3D models for your food. Don’t forget to prepare a square icon for each one of the ingredients and dishes you make! 5. Set up all the required data, like the recipes for your dishes, how the different cooking methods affect each ingredient, what recipes players need to prepare in each level, and so on and so forth. 6. Build the mod into a file from the SDK, copy it to the corresponding folder and start up Automachef to give it a try! 7. When you are happy with your creation you can post it to the Steam Workshop from within the Mods screen in the game. https://steamcdn-a.akamaihd.net/steamcommunity/public/images/clans/34988152/ac4e5de126a01beaa352f67ed7be490ad7faa8ba.png We can’t wait to see the exciting and creative mods that our fellow humans are going to produce in the future!Kitchen Confidential #6 - Contracts Mode!Aug 16, 2019 - Community AnnouncementsHey everyone, Welcome to our sixth Kitchen Confidential! Have you conquered Campaign mode? Built the craziest kitchens in Test Site? Are you hungry to build your own business to spread the joy of fully automated kitchens? Then Automachef’s Contracts Mode is for you! Contracts Mode In this mode you’ll be running your own kitchen building company, taking contracts from different clients and expanding your business - who you choose to work with is your choice! As you’re starting your own business you’ll have your very own cash reserve. This is used to buy the machines you need to complete the relevant contracts. Spend it wisely though, as spent cash can only be replenished from successful contracts! Starting and growing your company Initially you’ll start off with a basic set of machines. These will be instantly recognisable as your everyday kitchen parts such as conveyor belts, dispensers and assemblers. As you successfully complete contracts for different clients you’ll be able to invest your hard earned cash into researching and purchasing more advanced devices! Once acquired, they can be used in all future contracts. https://steamcdn-a.akamaihd.net/steamcommunity/public/images/clans/34988152/17667c8dc70accca26fdec69351b3e6b3cb468b8.png Choose your next machine wisely! Risk / Reward As you successfully fulfil contracts your reputation level will grow! When you earn enough reputation its level will increase. What benefits will this give you? Well with a high enough reputation you’ll attract contract offers from much bigger restaurants, bringing in more complex requests and much bigger cash incentives! https://steamcdn-a.akamaihd.net/steamcommunity/public/images/clans/34988152/e3a9628a0866ab199569fb6a0fd7cacd5cee8f9c.png Decisions, decisions! If the sound of bigger contracts makes you nervous, fear not! Each contract you engage in will have three different difficulty levels, the higher the difficulty the more lucrative the pay-out! This means you can grow your business as a pace that’s comfortable for you. Oh and we should probably mention that clients will often put an efficiency bonus on the table that will be paid if you hit, or exceed the efficiency targets with your design. Post Patch Feedback We hope that our recent Patch has improved everyone’s gameplay experience with Automachef! Your feedback is greatly appreciated and we’re keeping an eye on what you’re telling us. Twitch Prime membership is automatically bundled with Amazon Prime, and if you've signed up you can grab the games here—scroll down to the bottom of that page. You can claim four in total, and the other two are platformer Wonder Boy: The Dragon's Trap, which is a remake of a 1989 Sega Master System game, and biking game Pumped BMX Pro. Automachef, released late last month, looks the pick of the bunch, and its Steam user reviews are currently "very positive". Mable and the Wood looks intriguing, too: titular hero Mable can transform into a fairy, mole or monster to overcome different obstacles. It's due out on Steam and GOG later this month, so this is the first official release. As well as games, Twitch Prime subscribers get ad-free viewing, one channel subscription per month, exclusive emoticons and in-game loot. If you're already signed up to Amazon Prime—$120 a year or $13 a month—you can activate Twitch Prime here by singing into your Amazon account and then linking an existing Twitch account. As humans and definitely not robots, we love efficiency! But what is efficiency in Automachef and how can you make sure you’re always operating at 100% and maximising your profit margins? Maximum Efficiency! In the kitchen, efficiency is a metric between 1% and 100% that’s calculated on both ingredient and energy usage. In order to reach the glorious upper echelons of 80% - 100% you’ll need to use the exact amount of ingredients and as little energy as possible to finisher all of your customer’s orders. https://steamcdn-a.akamaihd.net/steamcommunity/public/images/clans/34988152/fbc0547aeabbab989c30ddd683b3b7b5acb4fd3f.gif In Campaign mode you won’t have to be too concerned about maintaining a high efficiency, but management will certainly appreciate it if you do! Contracts Mode is a different story, some of the more challenging contracts will offer greater rewards the higher your efficiency percentage. After all, what clients would want to buy a wasteful kitchen!? Tips for the top! Use the minimum amount of machines There’s little point in having overly long conveyer belts snaking around the kitchen when a more compact layout would normally be more efficient. We do concede that having a giant conveyer belt is pretty cool though. If you’re not using it, turn it off You can dramatically reduce your energy waste by only turning high-power machines on when they’re needed. Why have a 3,000 watt electric grill running when there’s no burgers on it?! If your kitchen isn’t overly busy you can even set machines into a ‘power saving mode’ to be even more economical! Just don’t forget to turn that mode off when things get busy… Only dispense the ingredients that are needed Time to become best friends with your Order Readers! These fine machines can be commanded to only spawn new ingredients when an order is placed, rather than rapid firing out cheese every two seconds. The timing of your dispensers is key here. Making sure they line up with your ingredient ratios used in a given recipe is a very good idea. One example of this is preparing a meal that required two slices of bread but only one tomato, in this case you’d need to set up a ‘time between ingredients’ so that the tomato dispenser is twice that of the bread slice dispenser. Go forth and be thrifty! That wraps up our introduction to efficiency in Automachef. We hope this helps you make the finest energy saving kitchens the land of fast food has ever seen! But if you do want to make a monstrous spaghetti like conveyer belt now and again, we really don’t blame you as it is rather fun. Automachef is launching July 23rd, you can Wishlist us and play the free demo below: https://store.steampowered.com/app/984800/Automachef/ You can also follow us on Twitter here.Kitchen Confidential #3 - Steam Workshop Support!Jul 12, 2019 - Community AnnouncementsHello fellow humans, Welcome to our third Kitchen Confidential! To wrap up the week we’re going to be explaining the Steam Workshop support that’ll be coming to Automachef when it launches on July 23rd! When deciding how to implement Steam Workshop support we focused on empowering our community to create and share amazing, fun and challenging content with other players. This led us to create three different ways for players to utilise the Workshop with Automachef: Scenarios, Test Sites and Mods… Power to the player! Scenarios Using our built-in scenario editor you’ll be able to create your very own levels for the game in a breeze! From the level objectives and what’s on the menu, to the environment that’ll be played in, you’ll have full control. https://steamcdn-a.akamaihd.net/steamcommunity/public/images/clans/34988152/d05a04baa197b583587c65172799d93a3de0e06f.gif If you’re thinking of creating incredibly tricky or devious levels, just know you’ll have to play and successfully complete it before you’ll be able to upload it to the Steam Workshop! Test Sites Add together infinite funds, every recipe and machine plus a whole lot of space and you’ve got the Test Site. Create your most impressive, mind bending or hilarious kitchens here and upload them to the Steam Workshop to share with the community! Dazzle them with your 100% totally human abilities. Mods Is there a specific meal or ingredient not in the game that you feel should be? Do you think that our existing dishes are too easy to prepare? Do you want to live the millenial dream and put avocado on every recipe? If you answered yes to any or all of these questions then you’re going to love our mod support for Automachef! All Steam players will be able to download the Automachef SDK and create their own ingredients and recipes for the game. But wait, it gets better! We firmly believe that sharing is caring, so you’ll be able to upload your creations to the Steam Workshop for other players to use, as well as downloading their mods to use in your own kitchen too. The possibilities are endless! Food for thought! That wraps up our introduction to how Steam Workshop will be implemented in Automachef, we’re excited to see what you all create come July 23rd! Now all you have to do is decide what you want to create... This time we’re taking a look at how ‘Blueprints’ play a role in Automachef and the ways in which they can be implemented by our players. Blueprints - Taking your creations forward! Picture the scene: You’ve just created a wondrous kitchen, comprising of multiple machines all working in unison, programmed to perfection! But wait, you’ve just finished the level, will your hard work go to waste as you’re forced to start anew in the next kitchen? NO! Blueprints will allow you to save copies of an individual machine, groups of machines and complex (or simple) set-ups to use in the level you created them in and beyond in other stages and modes. The best bit? Blueprints not only save the layout of your machines but also their settings, connections and cables! When used correctly this is a game changer, allowing you to not only save time in later levels, but innovate on your previous builds and create signature set-ups as perfect your tried and tested designs as you progress through the game. Making your Blueprints Like what you see and want to turn it into a Blueprint? All you’ll need to do is head to the Blueprints tab in the Parts list and select “New Blueprint”. You’ll then be able to draw a marquee around any of the machines you’d like to include in your new Blueprint or simply click on them! Once everything you want added is selected just press ENTER and name your new blueprint. https://steamcdn-a.akamaihd.net/steamcommunity/public/images/clans/34988152/87d81a66797a79228e4cba4b22ec68b2c6293b30.gif Once that’s done, you’ll be able to immediately apply it to your kitchens both present and future. https://steamcdn-a.akamaihd.net/steamcommunity/public/images/clans/34988152/1f70023ef9aca193f77ab9d6f0feef196b57414d.gif Useful info: Saved blueprints can be used in any other levels and modes, however they’re only usable if all the individual machines within the blueprint are available in that specific level. Second serving Now you know the important bits about creating Blueprints you’ll be in a good position come July 23rd! We’ll be releasing another Kitchen Confidential later this week where we’ll be revealing more details about our Steam Workshop integration, as well as how you’ll be able to further build upon your Automachef experience! Kitchen Confidential #1 - Disasters!Jul 5, 2019 - Community AnnouncementsHello fellow humans, Welcome to our very first Kitchen Confidential post! We’ll be posting these on a weekly basis to give you a behind the counter look at all things Automachef, from key gameplay features and mechanics, to individual machines and more! To kick things off we’re taking a look at what can go wrong in your kitchens and the various machines at your disposal to tackle any issues that arise… Kitchen Nightmares Despite your best laid plans bad things can still happen to your kitchen, sorry! What could happen depends on the environments and circumstances that you’re playing under - so keep that in mind. When disaster strikes it’ll fall into one of three categories: Fires Machine Breakdowns Infestations Whilst there are disaster-response machines available for you to install in your kitchen, a more efficient approach is trying to adopt a prevention over cure kitchen layout when possible. Fires Fires will erupt in your kitchen if you allow food to remain on a Grill or in a Fryer for too long without being picked up. Naturally, this is bad not only for your machine but also for the quality of your food - but it doesn’t stop there, unless extinguished the fire will spread through adjacent machines and ravage your whole kitchen. Luckily for you, there’s two options for combating fires: 1. The Sprinkler - Inexpensive and covers a wide area, but ruins any food affected by it. 2. Extinguisher Robot Arm - Expensive but doesn’t ruin food, but only has a 1 tile range. https://steamcdn-a.akamaihd.net/steamcommunity/public/images/clans/34988152/8bb039e89a373d809ebe03662fb3a6b76fc72934.gif That burger's looking a bit on the well-done side... https://steamcdn-a.akamaihd.net/steamcommunity/public/images/clans/34988152/be509f16f53db6e33b044a0c7072db4aa961fd0d.gif And the machine is on fire! To save even more money and power, we recommend not setting fire to your machines. Machine Breakdowns Breakdowns occur when you put your machines under too much strain in a short space of time. This is done by manually increasing the machine’s output to high-speed or overloading its capacity. Once a machine breaks down it won’t start again unless it’s repaired, this is achieved by placing a Mechanic machine in close proximity to any machines that you feel could breakdown during a particularly busy kitchen period. A careful balance when it comes to machine speeds and load will help stop breakdowns, but having a backup is never a bad idea! Infestations Leaving your food stationary in the kitchen for too long will attract some unwanted guests… Insects will be attracted to your not so fast food and begin to spread through your kitchen looking for food to sink their teeth into. Even ingredients and completed dishes kept in a Storage Unit are fair game for insect attack, but there’s a lower chance that they’ll discover them. To avoid a visit from insects, always keep your dishes moving and don’t let them stack up anywhere for longer than absolutely necessary. First course! ...
