Development has been going very well, we are working on more complicated features that take more time to code. One of them will be featured today! Thanks to all the valuable feedback the community has given us, it's been very beneficial towards the development process. Dropship, Drones and Troops The Dropship concept gives the Mechs the ability to call in re-inforcements upon engagement. The way it works is that the Mech can signal for support, drop a smoke grenade to mark a landing spot and a Dropship will fly in and deliver up to 8 Ground Troops at a time. Currently there is only one mech that can do this, the Scout Mech, but depending on how testing will go, this can definitely change! {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/36021092/64a64923f493e166de908e2afa6d50995649ab35.jpg Currently, there are 3 different types of Ground Troops, each with their own behavior. The Sniper will engage at a farther distance and behave more cautiously. The Machine Gunner will engage at a medium distance and not advance too close. The Assault soldier will behave most agressively and advance with a sacrificial behavior. These troops may distract your Turrets from the more valuable Mechs in a strategic move to overwhelm your defenses. While individually these won't prove too much of a threat, in groups they can be devastating if unchallenged! {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/36021092/6d1bb341781a7eb7d9247c617fcac41f2a094c87.jpg There are three enemy drone classes each with their own weapon system and threat level. Time to start working on the vast arsenal you will have to combat this army of enemy AI. This 'Emergency Drone' is on your side. Feel like your being overrun? Need some backup? Turrets, turrets and more turrets. With such a vast array of enemy classes, you will need just as equal a variety of weaponry to defend against their attacks. Initially quite basic, there will be many upgradable features on each Turret to transform them into efficient machines of destruction. It's been quite a while since our last update post announcing the sequel, so we would just like to update all of you on the new content we have worked on! I'm sure from the title, you know what the topic is about, so let's get into it straightaway! Mechs and Drones Over the last month we have worked extensively on developing different types of Mechs that have different roles in the battlefield. At the moment, there are 4 levels. As the levels go up, the difficulty and sophistication of enemies increase. The Scouts are the basic enemy you encounter at the start of a game, so it'll be the easiest to deal with! But towards the end of the game, you'll meet enemies like the well rounded Battle Mech, which are universally strong and have a wide array of weaponry. So far, it is the most dangerous of the mechs as of yet. However, while it is well rounded, it doesn't excel at specific tasks like breaking shields like the Laser Mech can. The new drones are functional but their weaponry has not yet been added. We will talk more about Drones on a later date once they are more developed. Armour and Shields As described on the Mech Spec Sheets, their defenses are broken down into categories Shields, Armour and Health. Turrets and enemies will both have this system. As of right now, shields take more damage from energy weapons. Armour absorbs more heavy damage and non-energy weapons and health is the primary health bar on which everything survives. As of right now, all of this is still in development and can change at any point! What's Next? Hard at work developing individual Mech abilities! For example, the Scout Mech can now expel a smoke grenade that acts as a beacon to bring in reinforcement ground troops. We aim to create abilities like this for all of the Mechs, to make each one unique and a completely different challenge from the other! A question we have asked on discord was what we should name the sequel. Should we stick with Artificial Extinction 2? Or perhaps Artificial Extinction: Retribution or Artificial Extinction: Retaliation? We would love to know your opinion on this topic! It has been months of silence since our last update post, but we would like to announce that we have begun development of Artificial Extinction 2! As stated in some other community posts, a full rewrite of the original game would be necessary to bring the game to it's fullest potential. The sequel will keep the best features of the original game but will add many crucial elements and depth. We listened to your feedback! A few of the improvements will include a much broader array of Mech based enemies, both in appearance and skills. For instance, you might encounter a Railgun Mech, Gatling Mech or a Tesla Mech to name a few. We are really excited to release first Advanced Level April 30th! This new level is one of our first steps in the Roadmap and we really hope you have fun with it. Here is a trailer for the new Advanced Level (full of spoilers, watch at your own risk): This level is different compared to the first 9 days because of the 1 hour play time with an auto save triggered at 50% Fuel. So you can resume the game from midway through the level in case you make a mistake in the second half. This level is also substantially harder than other levels you've faced before. You will be encountering more sophisticated enemies and new environmental events. This level will also present to you the first version of the Tech Tree! Note that while this is not the final version of the Tech Tree, we are eagerly waiting community feedback. If you think a more advanced Tech Tree would add to the fun, this can be fully fleshed out! Currently, you operate the Tech Tree by collecting tech points from destroyed enemies, they will blink blue on the mini-map to show you where they are. Use 10 points to unlock the advanced Sentry's such as the Flak or Mortar Sentry! You can also unlock Nukes which can be aimed and dropped from the ship! It's adding new systems and components which takes time to create but rest assured that it will be released as soon as it's ready. As a rough guide, we're expecting to release the first Advanced Level in the 2 week range. We hope you are as excited as we are about the future of Artificial Extinction! Now let’s talk about the Advanced Levels. The Advanced Levels are only unlocked for players who have finished the 9 days. Therefore, the levels will be a lot more challenging which we are sure you will enjoy! The levels will be longer, introduce special events such as darkness or weather, new sentry types, new terrain challenges, new enemy classes and enemy abilities to keep you on your toes. Each level will be 1 hour long with an automatic trigger for level saving at 50% fuel. So if you die at 51% fuel, you will have the option to restart the level from the beginning or resume playing from 50% fuel. We are planning on releasing the first Advanced Level as Roadmap update 1. Thank you to everyone who contributes with their ideas, bug reports and suggestions!New Sentry Revealed - For Advanced Level Use OnlyMar 31, 2020 - Community AnnouncementsI really liked your suggestions about some kind of longer range artillery/mortar sentry and I'm really excited to share it with you! In fact, a video was *accidentally* leaked on to the games YouTube channel that you can watch here: The Mortar Sentry does not require line of sight to find it's target. It estimates the necessary trajectory to launch it's mortars and then releases the 6 projectiles. It adjusts it's aim between salvos trying to improve it's accuracy. Each projectile contains a High Explosive that's deadly to armored targets within 5 meters and inflicts damage up to 20 meters. The Sentry is upgrade-able 2 levels just like the other Sentry classes. The details of each upgrade are still Top Secret but it may include improved accuracy, faster reloading times and a higher rate of fire. Ideally used against slow moving ground targets at 600m. These Mortar Sentries will be accessible in the upcoming Advanced Levels currently under development. Future Plans - Advanced Levels I'll do a more thorough post on the upcoming Advanced Levels currently under development but I just wanted to let you know that I'm hard at work on them. I want to make them the best levels yet with new challenges, more depth and more difficulty. You will have to complete the 9 Day campaign to have access to these Advanced Levels. Shield System Implemented A shield system has been implemented on the Prototype Max Test Level. It greatly reduces the amount of damage received from those stray rounds. One round disables the shield for 30 seconds though so don't rely on it too much. The shield system will also be implemented on the Advanced Levels. Stay tuned! Missile Mayhem!Feb 21, 2020 - Community AnnouncementsLess than a month until launch and I've been hard at work! I really wanted to include a type of ballistic missile shield in the game... and after a lot of work, I'm so happy with it! Introducing the Missile Dome weapon system. It uses a laser designator to track incoming missiles and then launches a missile to destroy the incoming threat. Just like real life, it's not perfect and you can't solely rely on it to stop all incoming missiles. Give it some back up by surrounding it with some AA Sentry's as well. Welcome To The AA Gun Show!Feb 7, 2020 - Community AnnouncementsI love watching these AA Guns work. The targeting system is extremely complex. From recognizing the incoming threat, prioritizing the target, calculating it's trajectory and velocity, using it's own AA Rounds velocity to calculate how far ahead it should aim and then firing the burst, adjusting aim every... single... round. Build 6 of them to work cooperatively with each other to create quite an effective AA shield. A successful hit actually requires the AA Round to impact the target. No 'slight of hand' programming hocus pocus, the round actually has to impact the target. No easy feat for even today's most advanced C-RAM systems. As the game developer, and a proud nerd, watching these things work so quickly and accurately is quite jaw dropping, better than I ever could have expected. Impossible for a human to make these shots using a rifle on an incoming missile, but you're welcome to try. :) Just one more example of how robots are surpassing our abilities on the battlefield. The anti aircraft mini-gun targets enemy drones, bombs and incoming missiles. Most effective in groups and spread along your perimeter and can be upgraded to include a heat seeking missile launcher... or two. Thank you for considering the game! Release Date, Hacking Feature and PricingFeb 1, 2020 - Community AnnouncementsWe're releasing March 13th! Which means I have 6 weeks to continue polishing the game and I want your suggestions! As far as pricing goes, I plan on pricing just under $20usd. This is not a AAA title and the price should reflect that and set everyone's expectations realistically. I'm an Indie Dev trying to make enough of a living to continue making better and better games and I appreciate your support. It's been a real labor of love and implementing my vision has been one of the hardest projects I've ever done. I'm quite happy with the final result but I can keep improving the game with your help and feedback. Even after launch, I plan to continue improving the game and being there for the community. This week I'll be sharing some more videos showing some of the challenging enemy tech you'll be facing. One of the coolest visuals in the game I think are the anti-aircraft mini guns winding up and trying to take out incoming surface to surface missiles. Just one AA gun has little chance, but 4 or 5 spread out around your miners can be extremely effective but not invincible. We've received a lot of great ideas from the community and we want to implement as many as we can before launch. This one is the ability to be able to hack an enemy tank and have it attack it's own kind which then sparks a battle between themselves. This is actually quite a strong ability as it typically leads to the destruction of the hacked tank as well as dealing damage to the surrounding enemy tanks. Hacking is introduced early in Level 2 and can be used onwards. This was a great idea and a lot of fun programming into the game, another tool to use against the evil AI! Each Sentry type can now be Upgraded by 2 levels at a cost of 30 metal units each time. The choice is not so simple. Fewer but more powerful Sentrys means fewer targets for the attacking tanks to focus their firepower. Having more Sentrys spread out the incoming damage allowing more time for repairs. This adds another layer of strategy the Player can use to give themselves an advantage. One of the hardest parts of making a video game is turning your unique idea into a really fun game to play.
