These communities are invaluable and have always been one of the cornerstones in making great games even more amazing. With Gamescom 2023 happening next month in Germany, we want to take this opportunity to meet some of you in person! Folks from different Funcom teams will attend the event, so why not get together and hang out? We promise that everyone will have a bloody good time! After all, FUN is in our name, right? We did it! Anarchy Online celebrates 20 years of service this year, and to celebrate a universe of the far-flung future, we’re inviting you on a trip through the past. We managed to wrangle up some former devs on AO to have a chat with em; you may recognize some familiar faces! You see, back then, consumer internet access was nowhere near as fast (or as ubiquitous) as it is today; dial-up modems were still the norm, and access to higher-speed connections was prohibitively expensive. This left us with the question of if crafting a persistent online world was even worth it. Some in Funcom’s leadership felt that going online was the future. Many others in the company then thought they were crazy. Both are true! “We had to explore. We had to lift stones, cross bridges, climb mountains; test the limits of our reality. We had to brave the unknown! We had to make ourselves noticed.” - AO Intro Cinematic We didn’t have a ton to go off of then - sure, there were MUDs and text-based adventures, but there weren’t many graphical MMORPGs to speak of - and heck, the actual term ‘MMORPG’ didn’t even really enter mainstream circulation until 1996/1997. Even by late 1999, there were only a handful of major games in the genre, and even then they were all sword-and-sorcery types; nothing like the sprawling sci-fi universe we sought to create with Anarchy Online. We were determined and ambitious - and as previously mentioned, a little crazy - and were flying by the seat of our pants. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/27907084/4f03d94e70b501e64e4350b55ff986de43fe567e.png Brace For Impact And then, June 27th, 2001. A day that lives on in glory and infamy in the hearts of many - the day Anarchy Online officially launched. Those around then may recall the release... well, to quote our post-launch statement, did not go “as smoothly as we had expected.” In fact, to this day AO holds a seat on the pantheon of history’s rockiest game launches - a distinction we’re not exactly proud of – but after launch, we truly put the metal to the grindstone to make things right. In the months following the launch, the team worked tirelessly to pull up and recover; fixing bugs, working with customers, and the like...and we’re still alive and kicking two whole decades later. And you know what? Read a short primer FAQ here, and we'll see you in the Arrival Hall!Anarchy Online RK2019 FAQMar 6, 2019 - Community AnnouncementsWhoa, we have a new server! Here's some commonly-asked questions that popped up; we'll add to this based on your comments and feedback. So, a new server eh? Yup! Rubi-Ka 2019 launches today and is our unique take on a fresh-start experience. Subscribers are invited to start anew with a pure experience - with no expansions, lower level caps, and a untouched economy to begin! Subscriber-only, right? What does that mean, exactly? As long an account is subscribed to Anarchy Online, that account can log in and play on the new server. If you have an existing subscription on an account, that account can log in as soon as the server’s online. No extra payments or actions needed! If you don't have an active membership now or at any time, that's fine: as soon as you start or renew a subscription on an account, that account can log into the new server. Wait, so how do I actually play on RK2019? You may notice a new dropdown menu on the AO Launcher, next to the Settings button. Simply select "Rubi-Ka 2019"; on that menu and start the game up. That will take you to the new server. What about froob (free) accounts? RK2019 is for subscribers only. Free Accounts will not be able to play on this server, although they can of course still play on the regular server! Am I allowed to transfer a character from the regular server to RK2019? ALL players must create a brand-new character on RK2019. You are not able to transfer characters or items between servers. Can I reserve my name on the new server? Name reservations are not available on this server. How long will the server be open? The current plan is to run the server for 12 months - however, if near the end we see the community wants to keep it going, that is an option we are not taking off the table. If the server closes, what happens to my character? If the server does end, characters do not carry over from RK2019 to the original server. Will there be an Item Store, or Heckler Juice? The item store will be available on the new server. However, some items will not be available such as Heckler Juice. What about the level caps and expansions? How will those be handled? The server starts with no expansions and a low level cap (10). The level cap will be raised periodically (and based on your feedback), and expansions will be added to the server over time. We'll release the expansions in sequential order, meaning: * Notum Wars * Shadowlands * Alien Invasion * Lost Eden * Legacy of the Xan The timeframe in which the expansions will be rolled out is not set in stone and is, again, based on your feedback. What about balance, mechanics, and systems? Are those being reverted? We are not reverting any code, systems, or balance changes with the new server. Existing mechanics and systems such as damage caps, falling damage, XP loss, Improvement Point (IP) menu, profession balance, PvP, etc. will not be reverted from how they currently are.
