The 50 best FPS on PCMay 21, 2018 - Rock, Paper, ShotgunThe best shooters endure. While the state of the art moves on in other genres and leaves old designs in the dust, it’s as fun to fire a well-made shotgun from an early 90s FPS as from one released today. For that reason, this list runs the gamut from genre classics to those released in the last year. There’s bound to be something for you inside. Aliens vs. Marines mod recasts AVP into Crysis 2Nov 8, 2012 - PC Gamer If a sound epitomized Rebellion's 1999 FPS classic Aliens vs. Predator, it's the terror-inducing ping of a motion tracker. Eyeballing your demise creeping closer upon a sensor screen occurred most often during the Marine campaign, and the same weighty pressure of panic from being hunted by something quite evolved into efficiently snuffing out life appears in Aliens vs. Marines, a recreation of AVP's Marine missions glittering with acid-droplet-like beauty on CryEngine 3. Author oldschool.Dave's efforts so far look astounding: explosions deform around objects, injuries don't magically heal themselves, alien encounters won't be scripted, and quicksaving heads out the airlock. From the work-in-progress video, the mod perfectly captures the opening moments of a Marine barreling haphazardly down metallic corridors, shooting egg sacs, and flipping over chairs. And, of course, it's exquisitely atmospheric. Planned as a Crysis 2 mod for now, Aliens vs. Marines might sprout into a standalone release in the future. And yes, it's exceptionally tough thinking up an egg-laying pun without tossing everyone's cookies, so I won't bother.Do not adjust your gamma: The 5 scariest PC games of all timeOct 27, 2012 - PC Gamer Welcome! I am your (g)host, Craig FEARSOME, beckoning you in to this eldritch gathering of... LOOK BEHIND YOU! Yes, there is NOTHING there. The very absence of fear is perhaps the greatest fear of all. No? But I used Caps Lock and italics! WhAt aBOut NOwWow? Fine, you are unafraid of typography. How about a list of the scariBOOest PC games? Hah. I saw you flinch! Now you are atmospherically prepared, ensure there are neither babies nor pets between yourself and the nearest toilet, lest your bowels react unfavourably to this mildly cursed list of possibly evil games, aka The five Scariest PC Games of alllllllll timmmmmme*. *What? No AvP? No FEAR? No Hidden: Source? Where's Pathologic? Why not Cryostasis: Sleep of Reason instead of Amnesia? All fine questions... that I can answer by pointing out that you might find things scarier than I do. Even though it does make you less of a man than I am, I'm contractually obliged to let you know that it's all okay, and that you're allowed to be a big baby in face of those games that I consider as scary as a kitten's hug. But please do let us know what you do find scary, and what your list would be, because fear is best shared in a big group. System Shock 2 You awaken on a broken, quiet space ship. You're one of the few people still alive. The walls are covered in bloody graffiti and the ship's crawling with crew possessed by aliens. It's a standard set-up, but the fact that it wrings out scares from a murk of tropes is truly impressive. System Shock 2's genius lies in plain sight. If you want ink black shadows and scary violin screeches, you have come to the wrong game. This not the canned scariness of Dead Space. There are no closets with monsters. There are long sections of space corridors, punctuated by terrifying fights where you always seem on the back foot. Your weapons break. Your mind gets invaded by the ghosts of those that perished. The incongruous details really put it over the edge. Did that man just apologise for attacking me? Yup. Is that the sound of a screeching monkey? Holy fuck it is. All the while you're being guided by the voice of the ship's captain, who leads you on to one of the most guts-wrenching twists in gaming. It's a trick that worked so well that the developers pulled it off again years later, in BioShock. Day Z If there is one thing more terrifying than a game world that barely acknowledges your existence, it's one that's also filled with zombies and humans. The multiplayer post-apocalyptic DayZ welcomes you to its 225sqkm of zombie infested world with disdainful silence. You spawn on a beach miles from anywhere. You need supplies and weaponry. This is where most games would start telling you where you go and what you need to do to, but here all you get is a sneer and a challenge to figure it all out on your own. You are not the star of DayZ; you are meat for the beast. The elements can kill you. The zombies can kill you. But the worst thing is the players. You just don't know...Daily Deal - Aliens vs. Predator™, 75% off!Oct 15, 2012 - AnnouncementToday's Deal: Save 75% off Aliens vs. Predator™! Look for the deals each day on the front page of Steam. Aliens vs. Predator Patches Scrapped for Consoles; PC Support UnchangedJul 15, 2010 - ShacknewsSEGA has officially cut support for Rebellion's Aliens vs. Predator on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 with no patches or updates planned for release, according to a forum post (via AVP.net) by SEGA assistant community manager "Clumsyorchid". Clumsyorchid explains that "patches for the console versions of AVP... have sadly been scrapped," though there is no new information on "PC patches and would not assume there will be any changes unless stated otherwise." Seven updates have been published for the PC version through Steam, including a day-one patch. Within the patches are numerous balance changes, fixes, and updates, none of which will make it to the console versions of the game. Aliens vs. Predator recently received a DLC map pack, it's second, across all three platforms. It is unclear if further DLC is in development or if this signals the end of Rebellion's work on the project entirely, given that the PC patches have already been released. Shacknews has contacted SEGA for further clarification on the matter and will update you with any response. Crash Site Furious Tempest Monument Aliens vs Predator Update ReleasedJun 28, 2010 - Product UpdateUpdates to Aliens vs Predator have been released. The updates will be applied automatically when your Steam client is restarted. New Features * Enabled XP gain, leaderboard updates and associated achievements and skin unlocks for non-ranked games as well as Ranked Matches. Now the differences between ranked and unranked games is that in Ranked Matches, skill-based matchmaking, team balancing and other Ranked Match associated rules are enforced and in Player matches they are not. You are now unable to have a game that does not update the leaderboards, or award XP. * Major overhaul of low-level networking code for player-hosted (i.e. not Dedicated Server) games in order to improve connection stability and pings. Bug Fixes * Prevented runaway memory consumption under D3D11 if an FMV is playing when you lock (ctrl-alt-del - "lock computer") your machine with an NVIDIA card. * Several "groups" issues have been fixed, including a reported issue with Group leaders causing group members to disconnect from Games if they leave and then join another Server. * The spawning system has been tweaked, so that players will have a reduced chance of spawning very close to other (enemy) players. ;* Server start up crash which occurred on Win 7 32bit Home Premium has been fixed. * Several Server stability (crash) issues have been fixed; Balance Changes * Flamethrower primary fire now ignites target if 25% of health has been depleted. Flames will now continue to burn until target is dead, or target extinguishes flames. Base damage is unchanged. * Alien leap attack now causes the knockdown flinch on all targets from the "long distance" range. Damage is unchanged. * Alien tail attack now causes the light attack flinch, which does not "root" the target. Damage is unchanged. * You are now not able to jump and start a melee move in the air/until the jump has completed, or initiate a melee move and then jump until the melee animation has finished. Affects all species. * Stealth attack has had some tweaks to reduce the potential for an initiation to occur from outside the allowed "angle" and range has been reduced from 8m to 6m; * The Predator flinch ranges have been equalised with the Aliens, and as a result can now be knocked down by a counter (from any species), or an Alien leap attack that successfully lands. * Knockdown leap distance is now between 9-12m instead of 6-12m. Affects Aliens and Predators. * Predator maximum leap distance is now capped at 12m (in line with Alien) and is not modified by vision mode. * The Marine block will now only block 50% of an incoming light attack damage value instead of 100%. Aliens vs. Predator DirectX 11 Benchmark ReleasedMay 28, 2010 - ShacknewsRebellion has released a swish standalone DirectX 11 PC benchmark test based upon its shooter Aliens vs. Predator, available in a 303MB download from FileShack. This isn't the benchmark but is nice, isn't it? The benchmark test requires a graphics support supporting DirectX 11 bells and whistles, which are used to produce such fancy features as tessellation, advanced shadow sampling and DX11 anti-aliasing. After showing a cinematic of xenomorphs on the prowl, it'll tell you your average FPS for boasting purposes. Handy, that, no? Aliens vs. Predator was released for PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 on February 16. Client * Fix for a Skybox rendering problem in D3D11 build on Nvidia Fermi cards; * Various small D3D11 optimisations ;* Fixed rare bug where clients would get stuck on the loading screen. * Fix clients not seeing the 'custom match' flag updating in the 'Browse' screen when the dedicated server was changing settings after initially hosting a match without changing any variables; * Use an prefix for rcon command output text upon successful receipt of a rcon command; * Prevent windows cursor being stolen when starting in windowed mode but then doing ALT-TAB immediately. * Show (and sort) dedicated server search results as they come in instead of waiting for search to complete before displaying anything. * Fix extraneous appended to MOTD text when joining game in progress; * Invitations to dedicated server games now work. * Fixed all dedicated server games showing as "at lobby" in the server browser, regardless of being at lobby or in progress. Dedicated server * Fixed "Ghost players" being created on a server if the Steam backend could not be reached for authentication when someone connected. These appeared in the player counts when browsing servers, and in the server details player list when viewing servers in the Steam client server list. ;* Added more info to server console when players connect/disconnect, and print out the player list in the command window (including scoreboard) at the end of each game. * Use an prefix for rcon commands and echo command output to server console as well as sending it to rcon client. * Enabled logfiles (writes out console output and some command line errors only to files in logfiles_dedicatedserver). You can still override the logfile directory by specifying -logdir on the command line and if you do so any logfiles from a previous session will be archived in a directory called logfile_backups. * Small performance optimisations; * Dedicated server species ratios' commands check for unset values and report the default values instead of the invalid value (-1). The dedicated server was correctly setup in this case, but the command feedback text was inaccurate; Amazon Doing Xbox 360 Deals All Day LongApr 27, 2010 - KotakuIt's that time again!
