Sonic Mania

Sonic Mania 2 was never in the works because Sega and its devs wanted to move away from pixel art and “make something fresh”Jul 28, 2023 - Rock, Paper, ShotgunSonic Mania 2 isn’t in development and never was, according to the devs behind the celebrated 2D revival of the blue hedgehog. Contrary to rumours, that’s not because of a falling out between publisher Sega and Sonic Mania’s devs, but because both sides of the creative team decided they wanted to make something new. Several members of that team announced their own studio, Evening Star, back in 2019, and now we've finally got a few details on what they're making. "Evening Star is currently working on our debut title, a fully original 3D action platformer game powered by our Star Engine", the devs say on the newly-updated official site. The Star Engine is built to efficiently support "non-photorealistic rendering techniques", and "can be seen as the high definition companion to the Retro Engine" used to build Sonic Mania. The devs say they have a publishing partner lined up, and more details are coming "soon". (They're also looking to do some hiring, if you're in the market for a development job.) Sonic Mania director Christian Whitehead is serving as creative director and lead engine architect. Read the rest of the story... Brand-new stages sit alongside beloved classics taken from Sonic 1 through Sonic & Knuckles - all thoroughly, expertly remixed to form playful new challenges - and the package is topped off with vibrant visuals and a flawless soundtrack, both managing to perfectly capture the spirit of Sonic's original Mega Drive adventures. This week's free games are Overcooked 2 and Hell is Other Demons, and next week we'll have the chance to pick up free copies of Horizon Chase Turbo and Sonic Mania. Sonic Mania first launched in 2017, but it's a lovingly made tribute to the classic 16-bit era Sonic platformers that first appeared on the Genesis in the '90s. It's full of all new levels capped off by brand-new bosses, but you'll feel right at home if you played any of the original Sonic the Hedgehog games of the 1990s. It's also moddable, as we discovered thanks to the Knuckles Mania featuring Knuckles & Knuckles mod, which came out shortly after Sonic Mania appeared on PC. In the years since then, we can only imagine what Sonic fans have added to the game - they're a notoriously prolific community when it comes to making new Sonic content. Read the rest of the story... Try these great 2D and 3D platformersSep 14, 2020 - PCGamesNMario may be the most recognisable videogame character of all time, having seized family living rooms by the million via the NES and SNES consoles back in the '80s and early '90s, since when his vice-like plumber's grip on the game industry has only tightened. We on PC remain one of the last bastions of resistance, our towers still holding firm against the sinister cheerfulness of the moustached fiend and his dungarees. But while we may thank our own idols - Doomguy, Kane, Commander Keen - that our houses are mercifully free from chipper, irritating cries of 'It's-a me, Maaaario!', we will admit that Mario's creator (or summoner), Nintendo, knows how to make a damn good game. And we're a little salty that we don't get to play them because Nintendo hoards its toys. Thankfully, this has opened the door to any number of competitors over the years who are happier to share - even those who have their own consoles. Given his longevity - acquired through some sort of moonlight skin-flaying ritual, no doubt - Mario has taken a number of forms over the years, but his main sequence games are 2D and 3D platformers. And there are a lot of really, really good games in those genres which affect a similarly family friendly tone. Without also wishing to take over the world. Read the rest of the story... So, naturally, you’ll want to really nail those throwback kicks by, uh, playing it through an unrelated publisher’s digital subscription service. The blue blur and his grossly mutated twin-tailed fox friend are now sprinting through EA’s Origin Access Premiere service, with Two Point Hospital and Endless Legend set to join them in the near future. (more…) The Sonic movie theme song is here, and it's by Wiz KhalifaJan 24, 2020 - EurogamerRemember when the very first Sonic the Hedgehog film trailer emerged, and it was rather unexpectedly set to Gangsta's Paradise? We've now moved on to slightly more up-to-date rap, as the official movie song is a collaboration between Wiz Khalifa, Ty Dolla $ign, Lil Yachty & Sueco the Child. Sure. You can watch the music video for Speed Me Up below, which features lyrics such as "ladies love my speed" and "leave my knuckles, attack me for my finance". To be fair, the chorus is surprisingly catchy, and will probably be stuck in my head for the rest of the day. Something a little less fun, however, is the recent news regarding the studio behind Sonic's redesign. After the internet mocked the first trailer for Sonic's (frankly bizarre) original look, Paramount Pictures and Sega announced it would delay the movie to re-do the visual effects, and much of the work for this was done by Moving Picture Company's Vancouver branch. This resulted in a much-improved design: but the studio was then closed down just before Christmas, with owner Technicolor citing "more attractive opportunities in other locations" as the reason (via Vancouver Sun). Having to fix that mess then losing your job sure is... something. But now, Sonic Mania has also been announced as a second title in the forthcoming bundle. You'll get access to both games immediately if you sign up to Humble Monthly for 10/$12. The remaining games in the October bundle will then be confirmed and made available next Friday. Sonic Mania is an exciting new addition to the bundle, as it's been very positively received since release back in 2017. After years of misfires, it feels like a classic 2D platformer that truly celebrates and builds upon the roots of the series. It'll usually set you back around 15, too, so you're getting a small saving - plus a whole bunch of extra games - if you get it through the October Humble Monthly bundle. Read more Have You Played Sonic Mania Plus?Jun 7, 2019 - Rock, Paper, ShotgunHave You Played? is an endless stream of game retrospectives. One a day, every day, perhaps for all time. With Sonic Mania, a modder was put in charge of creating a new Sonic game with official backing. Decades after Sonic the Hedgehog came to PC, the modding scene had shown some incredible creativity, from a version of Sonic 1 where Dr. Robotnik is capturing animals, to another where you go fishing. But one of the more popular mods came in the form of Sonic Megamix, which introduced new characters and moves. Its creator, Christian Whitehead, went on to create the definitive version of Sonic CD, but it’s Sonic Mania that got Sega’s nod, with the Plus add-on reintroducing some old friends. (more…) Sonic the Hedgehog movie has been delayed into next yearMay 24, 2019 - EurogamerParamount's much-maligned Sonic the Hedgehog movie project has been delayed by a little over three months, and will now release on 14th February, 2020. The Sonic movie was originally scheduled to hit cinemas on 7th November this year - until, that is, fan ridicule reached fever-pitch following the release of the film's first trailer last month. There was already deep scepticism surrounding the art choices Paramount had made in reimagining Sonic for the big screen, beginning almost immediately with the very first character reveal. However, when the world finally got a proper look at movie Sonic in action, the entire cinematic endeavour was hit with a tidal wave of online disapproval. Days after the trailer first landed on the internet, the Sonic movie's director, Jeff Fowler, took to Twitter, writing, "The message is loud and clear... you aren't happy with the design & you want changes." These changes would now be made, he pledged, insisting that, "Everyone at Paramount & Sega are fully committed to making this character the BEST he can be..." Read more Sonic the Hedgehog movie trailer reveals his horrible human teethApr 30, 2019 - Rock, Paper, Shotgun I was unprepared for Sonic the Hedgehog to have human teeth. Seeing as chilli dogs are his favourite food yet he eats them without soaking the bun in milk, I suppose I knew that Sonic wouldn’t have the mouth and teeth of a real hedgehog in our world. I was still not ready for human teeth and weird lips. The first trailer for the live-action Sonic the Hedgehog movie (or Sonic the Hedgepig, as it’ll likely be named in the UK) has arrived, starring a CGI hedgepig voiced by Ben Schwartz (best known as Jean-Ralphio in Parks and Recreation) alongside human actors including Jim Carrey and James Marsden, and I just wasn’t ready for the teeth.
