We’ve also made broad changes to the in-game encyclopedia, reworked tooltips to provide more pertinent information, added a few new settings, squashed a bunch of bugs and smoothed out a few areas of the game. Solar Sail Games are delighted to announce a new ‘Quality of Life’ update for Smoke and Sacrifice which brings a raft of improvements across the game. Since launch we’ve been been attending closely to our community and this patch addresses many of the most requested fixes and features. The patch will be arriving on Monday 9th July so you haven’t long to wait! Inventory Management Improvements: We’ve added an inventory sort button for instant organisation. You can now see what you’ve stored inside chests on the map screen. We’ve increased stack limits, so you can carry more items. You can also now merge two stacks by dragging and dropping one onto another. Improved Controls: Keys, tokens, quest items and activators can now be used or applied with a single, context-sensitive button press - no need to open the inventory. We also added a button to equip and unequip your lantern. You can now hold your mouse button down to walk continuously. Save System Improvements: Story cutscenes now offer the opportunity to save your progress. Reminders to use the manual save Terminals have been added at key points. Improvements to clarity of objectives: The quest log text and presentation more clearly indicates what to do next. The quest log now indicates when a goal isn’t yet possible to complete. Balancing improvements: We’ve made weapons gain more health on repair, and last longer than before. Boots now last forever, so no more death from shoe expiry in dangerous areas. The cost of crafting some items is now cheaper, improving game pace. Improved instructions: A warning icon is now shown when equipped items are about to expire. Early tutorials have been extended to explain controls and features more fully Options and Tech: We’ve added volume sliders to the options screen We now lock the cursor to the screen on multi-monitor systems in full screen mode. Steam will automatically download this version for you, so you don't need to do anything to receive it. Here are the changes we’ve made in this version: The game now recognises the Xbox 360 Wireless Adaptor and unofficial Xbox 360/Xbox One controllers. We’ve increased how long boots last, and their durability goes up even more when you upgrade them. We improved how mouse clicks are handled to make it easy to pick up items that have fallen behind trees. We’ve fixed some bugs with drag and drop and with Steam Controller implementation. A Japanese translation has been added to the game. We hope everyone’s enjoying the game. Click the right mouse button to attack, and the left mouse button to investigate objects in the world. The game has a quick weapon switch which you’ll also find useful. Use the mouse wheel or the shoulder buttons on a controller to switch between weapons. Save Your Game Often Smoke and Sacrifice doesn’t save the game for you. For that, you need to find a Save Terminal. Remember to use them frequently. The underworld is a dangerous place, and if your last save is a long way back, being killed will really hurt! Prepare for Smoketime Once you reach the underworld, you have only a short amount of time before the Smoke arrives. Light sources such as glowferns and save terminals will protect you, but leave you stuck in one spot and vulnerable to attack. What you really need is a lantern, so don’t delay - find someone friendly who will tell you how to make one! Show that Bear! Some of the characters you’ll meet in the game will ask to see special items you’re carrying, indicated by a floating icon above their head. When this happens, you’ll need to stand near the character, open your inventory, choose the item in question, then select ‘Show’. Fighting Is Not Always the Answer Finding the combat tough? You’ll find that crafting or upgrading your armour and weapons can make fights a lot easier. You can often find creative ways of dispatching creatures without combat, or getting a helping hand from other creatures in a battle... Don’t Know What to Do Next? Stuck? Don’t worry! Revealing the mysteries of the Smoke can be tricky at times. The Quest Log always shows you what you can do next though. Press ‘Q’ on the keyboard or D-pad up on a controller to see it. Still stuck? Smoke and Sacrifice, the survival fantasy RPG, is out on May 31May 6, 2018 - PC GamerAfter spending an hour with Smoke and Sacrifice in March, Samuel described it as like "Don't Starve as a dark fantasy RPG", which is something I can get on board with. I like the hand-painted art, as well as the idea of taking a survival game with crafting and making it more focused and narrative driven. The game now has a release date of May 31, so there's not long to wait until we find out if it's any good. You play as Sachi, a woman who sacrifices her child to the Sun Tree, which has replaced the lost light of the failing sun and is the only thing keeping her community's land fertile while the rest of the world turns to ice. But Sachi soon discovers a "dark secret", leading her to an underworld on a quest to find out what's going on, and what happened to her child. You journey across the world, taking on quests, defeating beasts and crafting items to stay alive. You need a lantern to survive at night, for example, otherwise you'll be consumed by the smoky darkness. Don't expect an easy game—save points will be infrequently dotted around the world, so you'll have to make sure you're fully tooled-up before venturing into hostile areas. Perhaps the most interesting thing about it is its living game world: Samuel described a time where two creatures started fighting each other independently, leaving him to swoop in and pick up the spoils. It's also a big mish-mash of themes, which means you'll get hulking mechs alongside giant porcupines and jellyfish-like creatures called polyps. I'm looking forward to seeing how it all comes together. Smoke and Sacrifice is like Don't Starve as a dark fantasy RPGMar 20, 2018 - PC GamerIn Smoke and Sacrifice, you're a mother searching for her child in a bizarre underworld. All sorts of creatures inhabit this landscape, including jellyfish-like creatures called polyps and a cute hybrid of hogs and porcupines. It immediately reminds me of Don't Starve to play—you craft things to survive, which is extremely familiar. While you start by creating boots, melee weapons and small bombs, though, eventually you'll be creating steampunk-infused mechs. There's a lot going on here. What sets Smoke and Sacrifice apart from other survival games is a stronger sense of narrative drive. You play as Sachi, a woman who sacrifices her child to an entity called the Sun Tree in order to keep her land from being consumed by darkness. Sachi eventually finds herself in an underworld trying to unravel exactly what's going on, and what happened to her child. You then take on quests and journey across what a huge, varied landscape. It's not going to be easy: you have to save manually at infrequent posts, and one bad encounter—or just wandering onto a surface you're not equipped to endure—will easily kill Sachi. You need a light source to survive at night, like a lantern which you can craft, otherwise the surrounding smoke will consume your character. In my hour-or-so with the game, I didn't get close to unlocking mechs, but I'm intrigued to experience the long journey there. The developers promise a big game, and there's a lot of systemic potential here. I see creatures battling each other as I explore the landscape, and wandering into the aftermath of a fight can make it easier to gather resources, since everyone's dead and I behaved like a coward. While the creatures in this part of the game all want to kill Sachi, eventually you can tame some to help you, including the game's larger enemies. The developers at Solar Sail cite The Dark Crystal as a thematic influence, but also describe the game as a 'bucket of things' they like: hence a world where porcupine/hog hybrids and steampunk mechs co-exist. The only thing I struggled with a little in this demo is collision detection when performing actions like trying to catch a creature in a bug net—getting a sense of that was tricky. The art, though, is gorgeously offbeat, and the idea of reframing a survival game as a narrative-driven RPG is really cool to me. Smoke and Sacrifice has no release date yet, but expect it later this year.
