A little bit 'Left for Dead' and 'Far cry-ey'? We're not all facing it in quite the same way, but Covid-19 has made its presence felt around the globe, and although 2020 hasn't yet thrown actual zombies at us (my friends are running a sweepstake on the rest of the year's plot twists, and I am all in on 'aliens before Chrimbo'), we have our own flavour of apocalypse to contend with. As gaming devotees who visit dangerous places and face cataclysmic events on a daily, we're in many ways better equipped than most for this unfolding world. Still, the effects of this pandemic are continuing longer than we'd hoped for and our minds are either screaming 'Get out and party!' or 'Stay inside. Preferably under this table'. It's not just the outside world that's changing quicker than your nephew's Minecraft server. The habits and daily routines that defined normal life for many of us are all over the place. I know I've definitely found challenges in keeping an even keel. Read the rest of the story... Read more Resident Evil 7 is Capcom's second best-selling game everAug 16, 2020 - PCGamesNCapcom has released its lifetime sales figures, and to nobody's surprise, Resident Evil features prominently in the top 10. What might be surprising, though, is that it's Resident Evil 7 that's the top-selling entry in the horror game series, coming in as the developer's second best-selling game overall. In the latest figures from the studio, four of the top five sellers in Capcom's oeuvre are Resident Evil titles released this century. At fifth, we have the Resident Evil 2 remake, in fourth is Resident Evil 6, third is Resident Evil 5, and then Resident Evil 7 in second, having shifted 7.9 million copies in its three years. Monster Hunter: World holds the top spot, which is to be expected given that's an RPG game with a lower age rating aimed a wider audience. What's interesting is that Resident Evil 7 has comfortably outsold not just immediate prequels, but the originals of Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3, in a fraction of the time. The Resident Evil 2 remake is only 700,000 copies behind Resi 7, so that might very well work its way up further sooner rather than later. Unfortunately, the Resident Evil 3 remake has a steeper hill to climb, stuck behind the original 1996 Resident Evil in 25th place, something Capcom says wasn't unexpected. This chart counts ports and re-releases separately, so in overall lifetime sales, certain games would place differently - making Resi 7's numbers all the more impressive, since it hasn't been re-released at all yet. According to new figures released by Capcom and spotted by PC Gamer, the delightful tales of Jack and Marguerite Baker are now the company's second-biggest title ever, selling 7.9 million units since its release three and a half years ago. There's still some way to go until it tops the leader Monster Hunter: World - that's shifted more than twice what Resi 7 has, selling 16.1 million in just a couple of years by comparison - but the latest figures confirm that not only has Resident Evil sold more than the shiny remakes of Resident Evil 2 and 3, but also that of their original 90s counterparts, too. (more…) Resident Evil 7's Playerbase Has Dropped 90% After Launching 1 Month Ago on SteamMar 3, 2017 - GitHypAfter its first month on Steam, Resident Evil 7: Biohazard's playerbase has declined by a staggering 90% -- going from an average of 15k players per hour at launch all the way down to 1.5k players per hour on Tuesday. Similar to what we've seen with many other singleplayer games released on Steam, it turns out that most players haven't come back for seconds after their first encounter(s) with the Baker family or after finishing RE7's final act. What's more troubling is that in an attempt to retain players, Capcom is offering a $29.99 season pass, which doesn't seem to be helping. Even with the first wave of new content coming out shortly after launch, the ‘Banned Footage’ DLC on Feb 21 barely had any impact on the player counts which have already dropped down to lower than they were before the new updates. [caption id="attachment_247534" align="aligncenter" width="770"] Resident Evil 7's Average Player Count Per Hour via GitHyp[/caption] Player counts will likely fall even lower in the coming months, however, Capcom’s additional free “Not a Hero” content should bring a large amount of players back in May 2017. The free DLC was even teased after the credits of RE7 and (spoiler warning) features the return of fan-favorite Chris Redfield. After shipping over 3 million copies and receiving very positive reviews on Steam, Resident Evil 7's launch could be considered a huge success that helped revive the struggling series. Surprisingly, Capcom's shareholders didn't see things the same way and the company’s stock fell right after the game's release. Putting business and bias aside, there's no question that Resident Evil 7's launch has outperformed the past few entries in the franchise when simply looking at the player count numbers. As we originally reported, RE7's launch numbers doubled RE6's peak player counts from back in 2013. But even with 2x the players, RE7's debut on Steam still only managed to barely crack the top 20 coming in at #19 -- a peak which the player counts haven't come close to matching since then.Resident Evil 7: Biohazard Launches at #1 on Twitch and #19 on SteamJan 30, 2017 - GitHypAfter years of fans having to seek scares elsewhere, Capcom’s decision to finally return Resident Evil to its survival horror roots has helped revive the franchise. Resident Evil 7: Biohazard debuted this week at #19 on Steam with a peak of 20,338 players. To put in comparison, Resident Evil 6 peaked at 11k players back in 2013 and the recent failed attempt at a multiplayer shooter, Umbrella Corps, debuted to a peak of only 419 players back in June… a number which has quickly dwindled down to only 4 players online right now. [caption id="attachment_237577" align="aligncenter" width="770"] Resident Evil 7's Player Per Hour Data via GitHyp[/caption] While Resident Evil 7 doubling RE6’s numbers and cracking the top 20 on Steam is good news for Capcom, the launch numbers aren’t as impressive when comparing RE7 to last year’s most played new releases such as No Man's Sky (212k players), XCOM 2 (132k players), and Dark Souls III (129k players). When looking at all of 2016's highest player counts, RE7’s peak wouldn’t have been enough to even break Steam’s top 50 most played games. Resident Evil 7's "Beginning Hour" free playable teaser on Steam also signaled that the game's launch might be on the lower side of new releases in 2017. The Beginning Hour demo peaked at 3,885 players in December and only averaged around 500 players per hour in the the weeks leading up to the full game's release. On Twitch, RE7 had a much stronger debut at #1 with a peak of 215,561 viewers. However, the viewer counts have dropped off significantly to an average of only 20k viewers per hour where it’s close to already falling out of Twitch’s top 10. Compared to Twitch's most watched games of 2016, RE7 would have been #8 on the list, so it'll be interesting to see where the game ends up in 11 months at the end of the year. [caption id="attachment_237576" align="aligncenter" width="770"] Resident Evil 7: Biohazard's Viewer Per Hour Data via GitHyp[/caption] Unlike the huge drop on Twitch, player counts have remained fairly close to Resident Evil 7’s launch day numbers with only a minor drop in its first week on Steam. After Week 1, RE7 is still managing to pull in an average daily low of 9k players and average daily high of 17k players. To keep RE7's player counts from hemorrhaging, Capcom is promoting additional free content planned for Spring 2017 as teased after the credits of the game's campaign. There will also be 7 extra playable story episodes as part of the game’s season pass and PlayStation’s exclusive VR feature will be unlocking a year from now to give PC fans who can survive the wait another reason to return home.
