OUTRIDERS Demo

Outriders is coming to PC Game Pass this weekOct 18, 2021 - EurogamerOutriders, developer People Can Fly's "smart if familiar" (as Eurogamer branded it) third-person sci-fi shooter, will be making its way to PC Game Pass tomorrow, 19th October. Outriders initially launched for PC, Xbox, and PlayStation back in April, delivering a slice of co-operative sci-fi shooter action Eurogamer reviewer Vikki Blake enjoyed, albeit with some provisos, in her review. "For some," she wrote, "I suspect Outriders doesn't innovate enough to stand out from an already oversaturated shooter market, relying too much on the ideas of other, stronger titles that have come before it." " while it's unlikely to make fans of those of you who've sampled shooters that came before it and left unsatisfied," Vikki continued, "as a die-hard Guardian and card-carrying fangirl of the genre, Outriders tickles me in all the right places. Offering gunplay that feels solid and satisfying and an array of additional powers and abilities to keep combat fresh and exciting, I can only admit that Outriders has surprised me in all the right ways." Xbox teased the shooter was coming to Xbox Game Pass just a couple of weeks before release, and swiftly became one of the service's most high-profile Game Pass offerings. Now, a few months on, Square Enix says that despite the "slight issues" with bugs and server instability, it has "gotten off to a good start as a new IP". "In regards to the response to Outriders, while there were slight issues with bugs and the like on launch, we believe it has gotten off to a good start as a new IP," Square Enix president Yosuke Matsuda told investors at a financial briefing back in May, the English translation of which was published today (thanks, VGC). In a post on reddit, Outriders' community manager from publisher Square Enix 'thearcan' outlined a raft of changes coming to the looter shooter in a patch set for early next week. Chief among them is a significant change to legendary drops. Legendary drop rates, across the board, will increase by 100 percent with this update. First up, Microsoft said it's working to put Xbox in TVs. The company is working with TV manufacturers to "embed" the Xbox experience directly into internet-connected televisions with no extra hardware required except a controller. In an update on the Outriders subreddit, players were told items granted in the upcoming inventory restoration process will have the same attribute combinations but with god roll values. This means these items will be at least the same if not better quality than the originally lost items. Read more New Outriders patch aims to stamp out worrying inventory wipe bugApr 15, 2021 - EurogamerOutriders has a new patch designed to tackle the awful inventory wipe bug. The patch, out now on Steam, Epic Games Store, Xbox and PlayStation platforms, addresses the bug that, since the previous update, caused the inventories of certain players to be wiped. There is no mention in today's announcement of the Stadia version, which lags behind the other versions in terms of patches. Read more Outriders players are punching their way through the endgameApr 14, 2021 - EurogamerOutriders certainly has some worrying issues - the terrifying inventory wipe bug chief among them. But those who are soldiering on with the endgame have found a useful method to the madness: punching. Punching - or, to give it its proper name, melee - is an ability I barely used during my playthrough of the campaign. But players have found it is a powerful tool in Outriders' brutally-difficult endgame, and can be a potent option even when playing solo. Even more interesting, the melee skill - and the melee builds that have emerged around it - is most powerful with the much-maligned Devastator class. This class is ostensibly a tank that some Outriders players are kicking from random co-op groups because of a perceived lack of damage per second potential during Expeditions, the endgame missions that revolve around completing the map as quickly as possible. People Can Fly's looter shooter hit over 100,000 concurrent players on Steam, where it is currently the top-selling game at £49.99. As a point of comparison, Square Enix's high-profile flop Marvel's The Avengers hit a peak concurrent player count of 28,145 on Steam when it launched in September. It's currently averaging 1000 concurrent players over the last 30 days. That means this mystery player clocked 254 hours in just 15 days. That also means someone has played the demo for an average of just under 17 hours a day since it came out. The developer issued a server-side update to enable the Gauss boss chest to drop legendaries after yesterday preventing all chests from dropping legendary items. "Having listened to very reasonable community feedback, we have enabled the Gauss boss chest to drop legendaries again as we should indeed be rewarding boss runs," People Can Fly said in a tweet. Read more Outriders is a third-person cover shooter you really shouldn't play as a third-person cover shooterMar 4, 2021 - EurogamerOutriders seems to want you to play like you're playing Gears of War, which isn't a stretch, given its developer. Polish studio People Can Fly is the studio behind 2013's Gears of War: Judgment, and there is so much of that game here. To a fault, really. Last, last generation level design is all around. That Xbox 360 brown fudge, that convenient hip-high cover dipped generously into a war-torn flan. Chunky enemies and chunks of enemies, bad guys exploding in a puff of blood for no real reason at all. The chug of a rifle, a shotgun blast when someone gets too close. Hold a button to observe. Even the name of the game sounds like something Spark Unlimited would have come up with the decade before last. The story is one I've heard a million times before. It revolves around a soldier who mysteriously gains powers and must fight to save humanity on a harsh alien planet called Enoch. There's a quite incredible tonal whiplash as your soldier shifts from utter bemusement to wise-cracking asshole and back again. Outriders is trying to be a gritty, cool sci-fi romp, but its demo is too often undone by unintentionally hilarious cutscenes whose character deaths ought to be accompanied by canned laughter. The story teases that you'll eventually uncover the truth about the alien planet's mysterious energy, but when the writing's this bad it's hard to care. Read more
