We hope you enjoyed our recent MultiVersus Developer Update video, because we couldn't wait to share it with you. Leading up to launch, we'll be releasing several blogs that take a closer look at the new features and changes that'll be heading to MultiVersus when we launch on May 28. We couldn't be more thankful for all of the invaluable feedback we received from the community during our Open Beta period and we can't wait to show you all what we've been working on. In short, when MVS returns it will incorporate a smoother, more reliable online experience. Let's dive right in, shall we? REBUILT FROM THE GROUND UP During Open Beta, MultiVersus utilized a client server model netcode, meaning that, for many players, hitting your opponent felt slightly off at times. Put another way, after you pressed a button, the logic for what you saw was calculated on one of various servers and if you weren't in close proximity to one of these servers, the latency made for a poor, imprecise experience, not only for you, but also for your teammates and opponents. This meant that people in different regions of the world had issues playing with their friends, and that needed to be fixed. Quite simply, our old netcode didn't meet expectations, and the only way to truly remedy the situation was to rebuild it entirely from the ground up. So, without going into too much technical terminology, our team built a deterministic netcode that is tailor made for MultiVersus, regardless of mode or number of players. Our goal was and is to deliver world class online play that is fair, dependable, and gives us the flexibility to build for the present and future of MultiVersus. By vastly improving our networking foundations, we're able to optimize the experience for a variety of modes, including 1v1, 2v2, 4-player free-for-all, and more. Properly architected rollback networking is incredibly cool in that it essentially predicts what each player is going to do next and then uses those predictions to keep the moment-to-moment gameplay buttery smooth and consistent. Basically, our new netcode allows for a much more dependable and predictable competitive and cooperative experience that will benefit all players. These videos demonstrate MultiVersus' rollback netcode in action. First we showcase a lower ping environment. The blue line indicates the path that the client predicted and the red line indicates the state after rollback has happened. Next we show a higher ping environment. You can see that even with higher ping, the game still manages to maintain a smooth look and feel. IMPROVED MATCHMAKING With improved netcode, comes improved matchmaking. During Open Beta, matchmaking was often determined by latency, meaning that people were often matching with opponents in nearby regions, since being in closer proximity would yield higher quality matches with lower ping and better connections. Multiversus works great on Steam Deck, even though it's not marked as verified on Valve's storefront. While the Smash Bros alternative could still have quirks lurking under the hood, its compatibility with the portable powerhouse means you can take Batman, Shaggy, and the rest of your favorite franchise fighters with you on the go, but you might want to leave Taz at home. We consider the Steam Deck OLED to be the best handheld gaming PC on the market right now, and this Warner Bros brawler makes for a great way to show off its capabilities. The free-to-play cartoon fighting game garnered immediate attention for its vibrant visual style and a wide-ranging cast of recognizable characters. It seemed set to take a place next to fighters like Brawlhalla or Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl when it came out in an open beta in 2022, but its reputation (and player count) soon took a hit due to lackluster seasonal updates and its implementation of microtransactions. When the open beta ended last year, despite earlier statements that it would run through to the game's final launch, players were further incensed that they'd spent money on in-game items that would now be lost. This is just the beginning and we're seeing promising results, but we will continue to improve our online experience for everyone! Maps Scooby's Mansion (No Roof) Increased blastbox size by 10%. Ringouts were coming a bit too fast on the map so we increased the size by a bit. Space Jam Map Updates! We're now keeping score of baskets made! Scoring a basket now awards points based on the distance thrown. Try for some difficult 3 pointers! Basket scores will now be broadcasted on the BIG screen! Tutorial Intro tutorial has been simplified, removing a number of steps VO clips have been added to the intro tutorial. Soon you'll be able to hurl your opponents away from the Iron Throne while humming an all-new remix of the awesome Game of Thrones theme music which has been composed with multiple sections that can transition dynamically depending on what mayhem is taking place in the match. When you play the Game of Thrones map, you win or you... fall off the map. Network & Latency Improvements: Since the Open Beta launch, we've made many optimizations to MVS to improve performance. We recently implemented multi-path network traffic acceleration to improve stability and latency, which will lead to a much improved online experience for players worldwide. This is just the beginning and we'll be continuing to invest in and improve in this area. This is a priority for us and the team is hard at work at making the online experience amazing! New Battle Pass: We're happy to share a little information about our Season 2 Battle Pass which is chock full of new badges, icons/profile icons, banners and taunts for you to unlock and enjoy! Season 2 will boast fun new Character Variants to collect along both the Free and Premium tracks such as Baker Street Tom & Jerry and Astronaut Velma. If Ringouts happen to be your thing, we're also adding some new additions such as Toxic Explosion and Lava Breath that are sure to demoralize your opponents in the flashiest way possible. It may take a while for the items you redeem from Multiversus codes to appear in the free PC game, so bear that in mind. So far, none of the ones we've seen give you any character keys to unlock Multiversus characters or additional toast you can use to cheer on players you enjoyed playing with.
