Final Fantasy XV

Square Enix won't let us play Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth on PC yet, so my consolation prize is finally playing Final Fantasy 15Feb 27, 2024 - PC GamerI'm descending into a wet cave. The flashlight stuck to my all-black uniform provides a pitiful light. In fact it seems like it's mocking me by being on at all. I can't see anything, and what's more I know there will be a million goblins and ghouls in here waiting to make my field of vision a particle-filled hell... Back in 2018, one of the strangest video game livestreams potentially ever took place: Tabata announced he was leaving Square Enix, a majority of Final Fantasy 15's DLC was cancelled, and some PC port features were scrapped too. After 15's tumultuous development, it was an unsurprising end, but obviously not a massively surprising one given the events that led up to that point. Now, in an interview with 4gamer, Tabata very briefly touched on why he decided to leave Square Enix (thanks, GamesRadar). According to the Final Fantasy 15 director, the main reason was essentially down to the philosophy of Yosuke Matsuda, the at-the-time president of Square Enix. Tabata apparently said that the two of them had "different" philosophies, and he obviously knew that Square Enix as a whole would follow Matsuda. Because of that, Tabata made the decision to leave the company; though apparently he had been feeling the decision to leave for a number of years, and while he felt like he couldn't share the reasons then, he does think it's ok now. The game, released exclusively on PS5 on June 22, shipped and digitally sold a combined 3 million units in its first week. The figure is below recent releases in the series, and though Square Enix never officially revealed sales targets for the game, remains lower than one would anticipate the next mainline entry in the storied Final Fantasy series to sell. But, according to Square Enix, the game's sales are "extremely strong." The publisher's argument is that the install base of PS5 is smaller, compared to that of the PS4 when Final Fantasy 7 Remake - which sold 3.5 million copies in three days - released exclusively on the platform. Jonathan Jacque-Belletête, who used to work at Eidos Montreal, recently spoke with TrueAchievements confirming a longstanding rumour that the Canadian developer was working on Final Fantasy 15. "Eidos Montreal brought back Deus Ex. I was the art director on that - Deus Ex: Human Revolution," Jacque-Belletête explained to TrueAchievements about his time at the studio. "Then the executive art director on Mankind Divided. Then we tried to do Final Fantasy XV. Then they decided to bring it back to Japan - which I think was a big mistake, but it's still the truth. Ours was really, really cool." Final Fantasy XV finally released on PC in March 2018 after a year and a half exclusive to consoles, and it's still one of the best JRPGs on PC. Today, over five years since its initial release and on the Final Fantasy franchise's 35th anniversary - which is soon to see Final Fantasy XI return within FFXIV - Square Enix has announced this big sales milestone of 10 million copies sold for Final Fantasy XV, and thanks fans for their support. We're not sure whether that includes players that downloaded Final Fantasy XV on Xbox Game Pass when it was available, but nonetheless, it's an impressive milestone. The PC version is definitely a big part of that number, too, since the Final Fantasy XV Windows Edition sold one million copies on Steam in its first year alone. There have been quite a few sales in the three years since. Read the rest of the story... Announced back in March, the new, revamped PlayStation Plus launches next month, June 22 (for Europe, anyway). And over on the PlayStation Blog, we've been given a little taste of the games that will be available on the service. The selection detailed in the post isn't as big as you might expect, though the post does note that this is an "early look at some of the games that will be included during the launch time frame." The post starts off with the list of PS4 and PS5 games that will be available. You probably won't be surprised to see titles like Bloodborne on there (which was already available on PlayStation Now). The first God of War is included, alongside some other big name titles like Marvel's Spider-Man and the Demon's Souls remake. There are some slightly nicher titles in there too, like both Gravity Rush games, and the most important flagship title there is, Knack (but sadly no Knack 2). Once you try one, though, there’s no going back. I’ve been a big fan of ultrawide gaming monitors for years now, mostly because supported PC games just look fantastic on them. Partly because its brand new “Awakening” reveal trailer shown off during Wednesday’s latest PS5 Showcase a) looked fantastic, and b) explicitly stated it had been captured on PC, thereby giving me hope that it will come to PC eventually. But mostly because it reminded me a lot of the previous game in the series, the wonderful (but epically flawed) Final Fantasy 15. Allow me to explain. One a day, every day, perhaps for all time… When I think back to the launch of Final Fantasy XV back in 2016, I still can’t quite believe that Square Enix managed to get away with it all. Everyone might be kicking off now about separating the Final Fantasy VII Remake into multiple who-knows-how-many parts, but at least we know (hopefully) that they’re all going to be actual games. If you wanted to understand what the heck was going on in Final Fantasy XV, you had to watch a 110 minute CG movie called Kingsglaive first, then a five-part anime series called Brotherhood. There was also an entirely separate (albeit promotional) game detailing the life and fun adventure times of the main character’s dad called A King’s Tale, and a real-life version of the in-game minigame, Justice Monsters Five. You didn’t need to play the last two to understand the story, but man alive, what a mad old set of affairs, eh? And that’s before we get to the whole DLC debacle. (more…)
