Battleborn

Abandoned FPS Battleborn is somehow back, years after being shut downNov 16, 2023 - PCGamesNOh Battleborn, we hardly knew ye. A multiplayer shooter with a quasi-Borderlands visual style, Battleborn launched at perhaps the worst time possible, less than one month before the Activision Blizzard behemoth Overwatch. One year after its 2016 release, Battleborn went free to play. After that, Gearbox announced a staggered shutdown of the entire FPS, pulling it from sale in 2019, and finally deactivating the Battleborn servers in January 2021. Between Overwatch, Fortnite, PUBG, and emergent goliaths like Valorant and Apex Legends, Battleborn didn't stand much of a chance. But now, more than two years after it was pronounced dead, Battleborn is back, and you can play it today. Read the rest of the story... With its servers deactivated, Battleborn is now no longer playable in any form - even single-player. It had already been removed from digital storefronts. Battleborn was reasonably well-received when it launched for PC and consoles in 2016, with many praising its ambitious, inventive blend of first-person shooting and MOBA-style action, even if the combination didn't always land in practice. Read more Battleborn will be unplayable - even in single-player - following its shutdown in JanuaryJan 4, 2021 - PCGamesNBattleborn is one of Borderlands developer Gearbox's less successful ventures, and it was little surprise when it was announced back in 2019 that the game would be shutting down. The official end is coming later this month, and if you ever wanted to see the game first-hand, this is your final chance: Battleborn will be completely unplayable once the servers are shut off. Battleborn will be unplayable as of January 25, 2021, when the servers shut down, including any single-player options. "Once the servers are offline," publisher 2K explains, "Battleborn won't be playable in any way." If you don't already own it, the only way to pick up Battleborn would be through a physical copy - the game was removed from digital storefronts in November 2019, and its microtransaction currency was disabled in February 2020. The PC version of Battleborn currently has about nine players, according to SteamDB, so it's not looking like there'll be a robust community shedding tears here. But it's still distressing to see a piece of gaming history, however small, disappear entirely. Read the rest of the story... Publishers 2K announced plans to shut down the multi-hyphenate hero shooter’s servers in January 2021, rendering the game fully unplayable – singleplayer and all. Battleborn’s competitive multiplayer side went free-to-play in June 2017 but the game is now barely played. This is not surprising. You can still download it and have a go, if you are curious about what Gearbox were up to before Borderlands 3. Battleborn was reasonably well-received when it launched for PC and consoles in 2016, with many praising its ambitious, inventive blend of first-person shooting and MOBA-style action, even if the combination didn't always land in practice. Unfortunately for Battleborn, it was quickly overshadowed by Blizzard's Overwatch, whose success was as immediate and sustained as Battleborn's failure. Publisher 2K declared it a flop a little over three months after its release, and Gearbox adopted a free-to-play model the following year in a last-ditch bid to attract more players. (more…) Battleborn is Close to Dropping Below 100 Concurrent Players Again on SteamJun 30, 2017 - GitHypSince our first article on GitHyp covering Battleborn’s rough start, things have only gotten worse for Gearbox Software’s ambitious hero shooter. Back in May 2016, Battleborn managed to crack Steam’s top 20 most played games at launch with an average of 8.6k players per hour. But only ten days later, the game’s playerbase had already decreased by 47% -- a number which dropped it lower than the playerbase of the dev’s 2012 hit, Borderlands 2. Sadly, Battleborn's hemorrhaging of players didn't stop there... Less than one year after the game’s launch, the playerbase dropped to under 100 players per hour on Steam. To try and bring players back, Gearbox recently announced a new PvP mode and a free trial which grants users unlimited access to all competitive multiplayer modes and a rotating roster of six different heroes each week. And while the new free-to-play update helped bring the player counts back up over 1k concurrent players, the gains were short lived. Now, only three weeks later, Battleborn has fallen out of Steam’s top 600 most played games and is getting dangerously close to dropping back under 100 players per hour. As of yesterday, the game's average players per hour was down to 203. [caption id="attachment_274503" align="aligncenter" width="800"] Battleborn's Average Players per Hour Since Going F2P via GitHyp[/caption] Seeing big games with huge drops in players switch to the free-to-play model is becoming more common as developers try to salvage their IPs. Sometimes it works, most of the time it doesn’t. Rainbow 6: Siege is a good example of the former with Ubisoft’s new pricing format helping the playerbase grow by over 5X since launch. The struggling monster-hunting game, Evolve, had a similar situation when its playerbase spiked from under 100 players an hour to over 36k pph after it went free-to-play. Those numbers dropped back down significantly after a couple months and the game now averages around 300-500 players per hour – a number which resulted in the developers at Turtle Rock ending support for Evolve. With Battleborn’s recent free-to-play push and new PvP mode being nowhere near as successful as Evolve's attempt at bringing back players, Gearbox is likely to also end support for their game and move on to other projects very soon – most likely shifting all of their focus to Borderlands 3, considering the second game in the series is still in Steam’s top 50 most played games and currently averages around 12k players per hour.Battleborn s new PvP mode, Supercharge, is outJun 26, 2017 - Rock, Paper, ShotgunHaving attempted to try out Gearbox FPS/hobby-grade coop campaign/genre blended, multi-mode competitive e-sports/meta-growth, choice + epic Battleborn heroes… thingummy Battleborn’s new PvP mode, Supercharge, I must excuse myself to make an angry cup of tea. Which title would emerge as gamers' favorite new team-based shooter? Both looked to be very promising triple-A games from the industries top developers. Both vying to become the new standard in the competitive shooter genre. Both multiplatform on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. And both releasing in the same month of May 2016. But now that both games have launched and we've seen how much more popular Overwatch has become in terms of viewers, it looks like 2k Games' new shooter has been left behind... so far behind that it's actually now even being surpassed by Gearbox's own most played game from 2012, Borderlands 2. Yep, in the span of just ten days, Battleborn's player count per day has dropped a staggering 47% from 196,518 players down to 104,978 players on May 12th. Meanwhile, Borderlands 2 had 107,970 players players on May 12 edging out its sister shooter. And at this rate, it might only be a couple more weeks until Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel is also outperforming Gearbox's troubled new IP that's already fallen out of the Top 50 games on Steam. Once more gamers began rolling in over the span of Battleborn's official May 3rd release day, the new IP had a total of 196,518 players on Steam and 200,097 viewers on Twitch on Day 1. Battleborn's second day on Steam remained fairly close to its prior launch day, pulling in 193,436 total players and indicating no major launch issues. However, interest in the game on Twitch saw a quick 63% decline with only 77,295 viewers on Day 2. On Day 3, Battleborn's player count showed a more significant drop off with 162,497 players (-16%) and the Twitch numbers dwindled down to half of the previous day with only 40,761 viewers (-47%). One reason for the relatively low numbers for Gearbox's highly anticipated new title was competitor Blizzard's move to launch their open beta for Overwatch on the same day as Battleborn's release. To put into comparison, on May 2nd, an hour after Battleborn unlocked it was ranked #12 on Twitch with only 7,119 viewers while Overwatch was ranked #3 with 46,807 viewers and had previously spiked as high as 70,078 viewers four hours earlier. And while Battleborn did put a dent in Overwatch's viewer numbers an hour after its launch causing it to lose 19,331 viewers, at it's lowest point, Blizzard's open beta still remained at 3.5x the viewer count of Battleborn indicating that things are only going to get worse for Gearbox's latest when Overwatch officially launches later this month.
