The multiplayer server is not currently online. So, a friend thought it would be funny if I announced A Short Hike Battle Royale for April Fools. I was like, "ha - what a funny concept" ...and then started tinkering with multiplayer code. And now today, you can try A Short Hike 99 - a downloadable multiplayer mod. This won't ever be an official mode for the game, but I wanted to share the results of this experiment with you all somehow. So it's a mod! With it installed, you'll be able to see up to 99 other players who are playing it at the same time. You can check it out using the Betas tab in the game's Steam properties. I'm going to keep the multiplayer server up for about 2 weeks. You can read more about it here: https://adamgryu.itch.io/a-short-hike-99-online-mod Maybe I'll see you on the island! It's been a while since the last update! Since then, A Short Hike has won the Seumas McNally Grand Prize and the Audience Award at the 2020 Independent Games Festival! It still feels surreal to me, but I wanted to thank everyone who played and shared my game. I also want to give credit to Dawn Blair, Mark Sparling, Andrew Wong, and David Czarnowski, since the game wouldn't have been the same without their contributions and support. So, the update today includes a number of optimizations, bug fixes, and a few commonly requested features. If anyone spots any new bugs in this build, please let me know! Multilingual Support {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/34782392/bf4152b970ff3b3eb2ce072fd46e9c3577a00f1d.png I've added an official French and Spanish translation to the game. It should detect your computer's language settings, but if not, you can change the language from the options menu. I might add more official translations in the future. There have also been a number of fan translations created for the game. To support the modders, also I've made it much easier to access and modify the game's strings. There's more info on that here. Autosave and Save Slots {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/34782392/0a69a2da6fd864c23f52eb2658f2d153e6ea3950.png I've added an auto save feature to the game, so if your cat unplugs your computer while you're playing, you shouldn't lose any data! There's also a new (although a bit clumsy) interface for switching save slots in the options menu. Full Patch Notes Official French and Spanish translations have been added. Fan translations can easily be added without having to mod the game. Auto-saving has been added. This can be disabled in the options menu. Three save slots are now available in the options menu. Various bug fixes and optimizations have been made to the engine. The mouse is hidden in game. The game detects if you fail the fishing tutorial. Button mashing has been made more effective when reeling in fish. Physics have been tweaked to make the player less slippery. Momentum is no longer cancelled if you flap your wings after jumping on a bouncy flower. Terrain rendering has been optimized. Fixed another round of typos. When speedrun mode is activated, you can hold the right bumper (or backspace on keyboard) to automatically skip text. The splash screen has been updated. For those of you wondering why we're jumping from version 1.4 straight to 1.7 well... It is a mystery! Much like UFOs and ghosts and stuff: no one knows and probably no one ever will!Itch.io Bundle for Racial Justice and Equality ends with a stunning $8.1m raisedJun 16, 2020 - EurogamerThe Itch.io Bundle for Racial Justice and Equality has been a stunning success, raising $8.1m for funds supporting the Black Lives Matter movement. The bundle, which contained more than 1700 games donated by their creators, was bought by over 810,000 people, raising $8,175,430 - well over its $5m target. The average contribution was $10.30. The top contribution was $5000. The Itch.io Bundle for Racial Justice and Equality was widely considered to be the best value bundle in video game history, not just because it had so many games included, but because of the quality of some of the games included. Indie darlings Night in The Woods, Overland, Minit, Oxenfree, Celeste, Super Hexagon, A Short Hike and 2064: Read Only Memories were all donated by their developers. Read more Got Animal Crossing FOMO? Play A Short Hike insteadJun 11, 2020 - Rock, Paper, Shotgun Red Dead Redemption 2 may be a good Animal Crossing substitute for people suffering from AC-FOMO at the moment, but I’d argue that the best PC stand-in for Nintendo’s cozy life sim is Adamgryu’s A Short Hike, which you can currently get on the cheap as part of Itch’s stupidly good value Bundle for Racial Justice and Equality. Indeed, it made the long wait until Animal Crossing: New Horizons that bit shorter when I gorged myself on it over the Christmas holidays last year, and I often find myself returning to it even now. Despite being infinitely smaller in stature than Animal Crossing, my frequent dips into this cosy island jaunt became a bit like opening a tin of Cadbury Heroes, promising myself I’d have just the one and then an hour later finding the entire box had mysteriously disappeared in a puff of plastic wrappers. I just couldn’t get enough of it. So if you, too, are feeling hungry for some Animal Crossing, why not ease that growling stomach with a little Short Hike. I promise it will do wonders for your digestive system. (more…) Get 742 games with Bundle for Racial Justice and Equality on itch.io from $5 / 4Jun 8, 2020 - Eurogameritch.io's creator has launched what is probably the largest bundle ever in its efforts to support the Black Lives Matter movement. Partnered with 564 creators, the Bundle for Racial Justice and Equality comes with a whopping 742 DRM-free titles in total, valued at over $3,400 ( 2,675), but which you can have the whole lot by paying however much you want, with donations starting at a minimum of $5 ( 4). It's already raised over $2 million ( 1.5 million) since launching over the weekend with a goal to reach $5 million before the offer ends on 15th June. All proceeds go towards the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund and Community Bail Fund split 50/50 in the important fight against racial injustice, inequality, and police brutality against black people. Read more Itch raises funds for racial justice with a 700+ game bundleJun 6, 2020 - Rock, Paper, Shotgun This weekend, indie-centric storefront Itch.io kicked off their massive Bundle For Racial Justice And Equality. Pulling together a collection of 749 (and counting) indie darlings, hobby projects and unsung curiosities for a meagre $5, Itch’s massive bundle has currently raised well over $400,000 for legal defence funds across the United States – and there’s no sign of slowing down anytime soon. (more…) Up Close: Mountains, mindfulness, and metaphysics: the supreme realism of Lonely Mountains: Downhill and A Short HikeMay 2, 2020 - EurogamerUp Close is a new, occasional and informal series here on Eurogamer, looking at the smaller points in games in greater amounts of depth. Covering anything from a single mechanic to a reoccurring theme, in praise or criticism, the aim is simply to look a little closer at the things that deserve our attention. Increasingly, games are looking to the environment to tell their stories. It's easy enough to see why. On one side the natural world is moving closer and closer to the centre of our thought, as the climate crisis becomes more urgent and less easy to ignore. On the other, it becomes a great device for telling a story of impending, existential disaster - or indeed one of the hope to be found in the aftermath. And, above all, pretty environments sell. But alongside the rise of environmentally aware games is a little micro-surge of environmentally conscious ones. Which is to say, games that are less about the environment as they are about that way you think about it, the connection that forms between your mind and the world around you. Metaphysics, basically, or mindfulness, if we want to narrow it down further. In particular I'm thinking of a couple of mindfulness games from the end of last year, Lonely Mountains: Downhill and A Short Hike, which both look to use the natural world to turn your own gaze inwards, and both happen to use mountains - specifically going either up a mountain or down one, although there aren't many other things to do with mountains in fairness - to achieve the kind of effect I think they're after.
