The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

Bethesda would "probably say no" to an Elder Scrolls show or movieApr 12, 2024 - Rock, Paper, ShotgunWith the Fallout live-action show now out and honestly far better than I was expecting, are Bethesda also brewing an adaptation of their other big RPG series, The Elder Scrolls? Not at present, according to Bethesda executive producer Todd Howard, and he says he'd "probably say no" if approached. Mind you, that was the stance he had until Fallout finally fell into place. Read more Is an Elder Scrolls TV show going to follow Fallout? Bethesda doesn't seem to be in any rushApr 11, 2024 - VG247Amazon's Fallout TV Show is here now, but before it was, the show had a swanky Hollywood premiere that I'm sure my invite for got lost in the post. At that premiere, snazzily dressed Todd Howard said some things, and some of these things were about the potential idea of an Elder Scrolls adaptation. When it comes to such a thing, it sounds like Howard's plan is - simply put - to keep on being picky. Yup, picky, but in what should be a good way. After all, if someone's going to turn the Lusty Argonian Maid into the blockbuster hit of summer 2034, we need to make sure they understand what the political climate of Morrowind was like when Crassius Curio wrote the damn thing. Speaking to IGN on the red carpet, Howard was asked about the idea of other Bethesda IPs potentially getting the adaptation treatment, be that a TV show like Fallout or something else. "I don't know. There's nothing in the works," the BGS big cheese said. Well, the ESRB listing for it is now live, showing us the rating and some interesting details about some of the dodgy stuff in, uh, the base game. Yes, stop wondering what life would have been like if you’d kicked off your first playthrough of the Elden Ring by chilling on a beach or which FromSoft characters Malenia might be related to, there’s a new DLC thing to gawk at. Though, if you’re expecting any cool teases about Shadow of the Erdtree’s contents, you might want to calm down a bit. You can find the listing for the DLC on the website of the ESRB, and it looks to have just become a thing. However, if you’re intimately familiar with the rating’s board’s listing for the base game, you might have trouble telling the two apart. Maxgriot, one of the mod team behind Skyrim Together, posted a comment on Reddit earlier this month suggesting that the developers have considered giving up on the project due to the reaction from players. Maxgriot's comments were made in response to a post on the mod's subreddit. The content of the post - titled "Is something going to happen?" - has now been deleted (a screenshot of Maxgriot's commetns can be found here), but the development team seems to have been upset by its overall message. Maxgriot responded telling the original poster that "we don't owe the community anything," and that updates are posted only "if we feel like spending time doing it." He follows up by saying that the team is "NOT making this for the community," and that "the community has been so toxic we even considered saying 'fuck it' and up, or but never anything to the public. We are making this for ourselves because we think it's a very fun project to work on and we learn a ton doing this." Read the rest of the story... People at the studio are apparently playing early versions of the game, and from the sounds of it, they’re having fun. While the game’s no doubt still ages away from actually, you know, being a thing the rest of us can play, it’s nice to actually hear things about it from Bethesda. After all, it took about 5 years for us to actually have it confirmed by the now retired Pete Hines that the game was actually in early development, following its announcement at E3 2018, via a teaser that feels a bit like we all dreamed it at this point. This latest update came within a nice message from Bethesda commemorating The Elder Scrolls’ 30th birthday, with today, March 25, being the same date that The Elder Scrolls: Arena released on way back in 1994. After running down how much TES has grown and evolved over that time, as well as impacted loads of fans and developers, the studio touched on what it’s currently got going on with the series and what’s in the works for the future. You know how Xbox said Starfield isn’t coming to any other platforms as of right now? Well, it still isn’t, despite a Twitter post from Bethesda having managed to give a few people who struggle with reading minor heart attacks. Yes. Now, calm down. It’s not our fault that a lot of folks on social media are on tenterhooks about Xbox games possibly coming to PS5 and Switch, with the likes of Pentiment and Hi-Fi Rush just having actually made the leap onto one or both of those machines. So, what actually happened here? Well, Bethesda Game Studios put out a nice little tweet last night letting folks know that it’d just updated the Nintendo Switch version of Skyrim and casually pointing those who fancied reading through the full notes towards its official Discord server. And yes, NSFW Skyrim mods definitely played a part in the achievement. Apparently this is something the team behind Nexus Mods has had its eye on for a while (the milestone that is, not the NSFW mods), and it’s a cool way to see just how popular modding has become, even if it’s been a thing for a decently long time. There’s even been some interesting pizza maths done to put the numbers into context, which I’m about to try and shamelessly one-up by talking about smut. In a news post, Nexus Mods community manager Demorphic explained: “These 10,000,000,000 downloads are spread across 539,682 mod files, created by a vibrant community of 128,361 mod authors, serving over 47 million total members, modding 2,683 different games.” Read more Yes, Skyrim's sneaky developers hid away cut content in the hopes that it'd be found by moddersFeb 2, 2024 - VG247As it turns out, because they're really swell folks, some of the Bethesda developers working on Skyrim did make a concious decision to unhook and hide away content that had to be cut from the game, but not entirely delete it from the game's files, with the hopes that modders would be able to uncover it down the line. As with any big, ambitious game, there was plenty of stuff that didn't quite make it into the realse version of Skyrim and has since been ressurected by modders, who aren't under the same stresses to get a full game finished and shipped in as playable a state as possible as Skyrim's developers would have been once development reached a certain point. The arena in Windhelm is one example that springs to mind straight away, but I'm sure there are others I'm drawing a blank on. Well, interestingly enough, some of the files that let modders know things like that were ever even supposed to be thing were sneakily left in the game by the devs. This comes from former Bethesda developer Joel Burgess, who worked on Skyrim in addition to a number of Fallout games and Oblivion, during an interview at the C3 modding showcase. Read more Yes, that Oblivion quest where you totally ruin a dinner party via an underpants spell is in SkyblivionFeb 2, 2024 - VG247Remember the Oblivion quest where you crash a dinner party and unleash a cheeky underpants-based spell on some rich folks? Well, Skyblivion's developers have just given us a look at the massive mod's version of it during a showcase at C3. For those who aren’t familiar, Skyblivion is the massive modding project that's remaking the fourth entry in the Elder Scrolls series in Skyrim’s engine. The team behind it are currently set to finally release their incredible creation in 2025, but have been providing fans with plenty of previews and sneak peaks in the interim, with the latest of these coming as part of C3, a big Bethesda community modding showcase. In this latest Skyblivion showcase stream, project lead Kyle 'Rebelsize' Rebel and quest developer Scott 'Fishfiend' Whiting kicked off with an impromptu look a funny little Imp model. Interestingly, the team is currently at a point with the mod where certain locations are being finalised and others that are linked to specfic quests are busy being revamped in ways that make them look even cooler than they did in the original game, making the most of the newer engine being used. Read more Creator of Skyrim's dragons and Fallout 4's deathclaws set to speak at new Bethesda community modding eventJan 22, 2024 - VG247If you’re a fan of Bethesda games, a new community modding event that’s set to take place on Twitch towards the end of next week looks well worth checking out, especially now that the artist behind some of Skyrim and Fallout 4’s most iconic creatures is set to make an appearance at it. No matter whether your poison of choice is Skyrim, Fallout 4, Starfield, or something a bit more retro (sorry, old people) like Oblivion, if you’re interested in installing or creating mods for Bethesda games, the chance to get a glimpse at the work going into some of the community’s biggest projects is hard to pass up. That’s exactly what it looks like C3, the latest event organised by charity initiative Fallout For Hope, will offer, in addition to some other interesting streams. As announced via Twitter, former Bethesda character artist Jonah Lobe, who gave the likes of Skyrim’s dragons, Fallout 4’s deathclaws, and Fallout 3’s aliens their iconic appearances, is the latest community figure set to make an appearance at the event, which is set to take place on Twitch across February 2 and 3. Much like all of the previous community events put on by Fallout For Hope, which has teamed up with the likes of Sheogorath voice actor Wes Johnson in the recent past, C3 - or Community Creations Con - is set to raise money for a good cause, with Make-A-Wish International having gotten the nod this time.
