This month’s list of leavers includes a few heavy hitters, like the horrifying Alien Isolation, and a duo of big JRPGs that are likely impossible to binge in just two weeks. Read more EVO was dominated by rollback netcode announcements, and I couldn't be happierAug 8, 2022 - VG247Evo 2022 just wrapped up this morning, and as a UK resident who stayed up to watch the whole thing until roughly 30 minutes before work started, it was exhausting. I’m not talking about the run time, I’m talking about the back-to-back banger announcements coming from multiple fighting game developers over the weekend. A large quantity of which, you’ll be happy to know, revolves around the implementation of rollback netcode. For those not in the know, rollback netcode has kind of been the hot topic over the past few years (although arguably it’s been heating up for over a decade now), reaching its burning point during the worldwide COVID-19 lockdowns. While before a large chunk of games struggled to match you up with opponents online without lag, dropped frames, or teleporting, we’ve now seen a vast selection of games past present and future featuring this improved netcode moving forward. While new characters may seem far more exciting for the average player, and this weekend didn’t hold back with announcements for rad new roster additions, it’s way more important in my book to see pre-existing games with entrenched communities get the support they need via online overhauls. Read more If you want rollback netcode, you’re going to have to play Dragon Ball FighterZ on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, or PCAug 8, 2022 - VG247Arc System Works has announced that Dragon Ball Fighterz is finally getting rollback netcode, but there's a catch. Let's start with the good news: Dragon Ball Fighterz is coming to PS5 and Xbox Series X, at some point anyway, and with that will come the fabled rollback netcode (which will also come to the PC version of the game). What's the bad news, you ask? The PS4 and Xbox One versions of the game won't be getting rollback netcode, it looks like. The news was announced at Evo, and the official Bandai Namco Esports account put out a statement going into a bit more detail. "As a result of our continuous testing to include the rollback system, it has been confirmed that the implementation can be applied to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC, and we have officially been working on its production," reads the statement. Dragon Ball FighterZ Becomes Evo's Highest Watched Game Ever on TwitchAug 6, 2018 - GitHypBeing the much newer game with the most viewers at last month’s CEO tournament, we predicted that Dragon Ball FighterZ would take the #1 spot at the biggest fighting game event of the year, Evolution Championship Series 2018. However, Day 1 and Day 2 of Evo 2018 made it seem like that might not be the case… and surprisingly, Capcom’s Street Fighter V more than doubled FighterZ viewer counts on Twitch during the first two days of this year's event. But as with any good FGC comeback story, the fan base for Dragon Ball FighterZ turned up in record numbers on Sunday for the final fight. Hitting a peak of 258k concurrent viewers on Twitch, DBFZ wasn't just the most watched game at Evo 2018, it was the highest viewer count ever for an Evo main event on Twitch. At this year's annual tournament in Vegas, DBFZ proved to be the most popular choice among those actually attending the event with the most registered entrants. The game's success on Twitch, however, was due in large part to it being North America's last chance to take home a big win on Sunday night. And the finale for Namco Bandai's FighterZ certainly did not disappoint with an ending that was entertaining to say the least as NA’s SonicFox took home the victory over Japan's Go1 in dramatic fashion. Evo's main event, Street Fighter V, saw a huge drop-off in viewers following the DBFZ finals. And if not for a random host from Twitch's top streamer, Ninja, which gave the game an instant boost of ~60k viewers, SFV might not have even topped Tekken 7 and Super Smash Bros. Ninja’s Fortnite viewers were also quick to drop-off and Street Fighter V's peak of 215k viewers fell to 170k as the finals went on late into the AM and the UK’s Problem-X took home the win over Japan's Tokido. When including SFV’s boost from Ninja, all of Evo 2018's main stage games all gained popularity this year with Super Smash Bros. Melee, Tekken 7, and Guilty Gear all having increases in viewership when compared to Evo 2017.Dragon Ball FighterZ was the Most Watched Game at CEO 2018 on TwitchJul 3, 2018 - GitHypWith CEO being the last major stop on the road to the summer's biggest fighting game event, the Evolution Championship Series in Vegas, the smaller Florida-based event has become one of the most exciting tournaments to watch on Twitch. This year’s Community Effort Orlando took place in Daytona and as usual resulted in many clip-worthy player entrances as the tournament once again pitted competitors head-to-head in the middle of a boxing/wrestling ring. With 663 entrants competing in the Dragon Ball FighterZ bracket, GGP Kazunoko took home the W in Grand Finals beating CO Go1. Despite not being the main event, DBFZ was actually the most watched game of CEO 2018 with a peak of 52k viewers watching the finals on Twitch. CEO’s main event, Street Fighter V’s Grand Finals, peaked at 46k viewers on Twitch as FD Fujimura beat DouyuTV Xiao Hai. SFV was slightly down from last year’s CEO main event peak of 49k viewers. While Tekken 7 came in third with 39k viewers during its finale that featured UYU JeonDDing beating UYU Qudans. And although it was the most played game at this year's CEO with 679 entrants, Super Smash Bros. for Wii U ranked in as the fourth most watched game on Twitch with 21k viewers as Echo Fox MVG MkLeo defeated Tweek in its main event. Now, Capcom really needs a new game announcement at this year's Evo to get members of the FGC hyped. After the publisher bet big on the failed launch of Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite, other developers have been scooping up the franchise's player base. Even with the current most popular fighting games, Bandai Namco is set to launch even more new games like Soulcalibur VI in October and Jump Force next year... and even Nintendo is gunning for the top spot now with Super Smash Bros. Ultimate launching before the end of 2018. Evo 2018’s official schedule hasn’t been released yet, but with Tekken having more players on Steam and Dragon Ball having more viewers on Twitch, we can’t imagine SFV will be able to hold on to its main event status much longer.Dragon Ball FighterZ Player Base Already Down 80% After First Two Weeks on SteamFeb 12, 2018 - GitHypDragon Ball FighterZ’s concurrent player count managed to break just over 9,000 this past weekend on Steam. But compared to its record-breaking launch, the most played fighting game ever on Steam didn’t have a good second week with the player base already down 80%. Peaking at 44.3k players two weeks ago, DBFZ more than doubled the previous record-holder Tekken 7’s 18.7k players at launch. However, DBFZ’s player base has begun to decline at a much faster rate than Tekken, which took over two months to lose 80% of its player base. [caption id="attachment_326748" align="aligncenter" width="786"] Dragon Ball FighterZ Peak Players per Hour on Steam via GitHyp[/caption] GitHyp originally predicted that DBFZ would be the biggest fighting game launch ever on Steam. Yet, we also questioned if it had the staying power that fighting games seem to always lack. Players simply don’t tend to stick around for long after getting beat up on. And despite very positive reviews from critics and players alike, the same seems to be true with DBFZ even after all the hype. That being said, fighting games don’t always die quick deaths outside of the fighting game community. The free-to-play, Brawlhalla, started with 7k players back in November 2015. And since leaving early access the Super Smash Bros.-inspired fighter has seen its player base grow over the past two years. Just this past weekend, Brawlhalla pulled in 11.6k concurrent players, topping DBFZ during the two games’ peak hours. Oddly, even with its solid player base that continues to outlast other big name fighting games on Steam, Brawlhalla hasn’t caught on with the competitive FGC and wasn’t able to secure a spot at Evo 2018. The lineup for the biggest fighting game event of the year was announced last week where two Smash Bros., Street Fighter V, Tekken 7, and DBFZ will be headlining. That all could all change at Evo 2019 with DBFZ likely to drop down to SFV and Tekken 7 numbers and Brawlhalla pulling in more players than the big three combined.
